obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

the highlife world series is a collaborative series of releases by uk-based brian d’souza aka auntie flo and esa williams. the first three parts are to be released in quick succession in early 2015, beginning with cuba, followed by kenya and finishing with uganda. each release features original songs produced in collaboration with local musicians. all proceeds from each release will be sent back to the respective countries in order to fund further musical production costs in years to come. we will also be seeking various ways to distribute the music in each country so the music is freely available for the musicians to use at home.

c series goes for the smash and grab and gets all funky latino on your ass with 2 tracks of funky floor shaking techno. c4 - cuba libre: this original latin house track gets a monster of a rework to kick things off with a bang, yes i couldnt resist! the deep warbling bassline and rhythmic stabs lead into the original vocal. from there it all moulds into one intoxicating cocktail to put your best foot forward and stomp away, it blends so well youll wonder why it was never done in the first place!? c4 - suavemente: something even elvis would be proud of im sure, elvis crespo that is! this international spanish hit gets funkd up a treat, pure ass shaking dancefloor material. put a funky bouncy bassline, those well known vocals with some rolling percussion and its like youre back on having your own holiday in a club!

cuba is a cool melodic tech groover, that demonstrates denis a s ever evolving production skills perfectly. he s definitely a talent to watch in 2009. on remix duty is germany s robert babicz, who has created an amazing deep melodic tech anthem that is set be a very big tune throughout the summer months for djs across the board.

the first in a four-volume retrospective of kuduro and tarraxinha pioneer dj znobia.

repress - unreleased early algerian synth electronic by ahmed malek, compiled and co-produced by flako. in the early 1980s, ahmed malek was already in his 50s, when he discovered synthesizers and electronic music for himself and started to experiment with sounds. the result was a mixture of ambient synth music, field recordings he made in cuba and a wide variation of different sound experiments that he also presented as different avanguarde music festivals in cuba and the us. none of it was ever released but we got a huge box of master tapes from his family and we re happy to present this different side of ahmed malek s music. it was compiled and co-produced by flako, a fan of early electronic and synth music. this is not a remix album though, flako s aim was to create an album out of 2 hours of material that sounds like it might have if mr. malek would have finished it himself before of his death. fully approved and licensed from the artists family. the album comes with an informative booklet with liner notes, an interview with flako regarding his approach towards the production and unseen photos. we will also release a third album by ahmed malek which will be more in the vein again of the music he is known for and this album will also be previously unreleased.

life is like a mirror ball! the first one in a hopefully long-lived series of disco and pop influenced super sound singles on running back, comes courtesy of the unmistakeable gibson brothers. leaving their biggest wedding hits -cuba- and -que sera mi vida- to the side, the philanthropic and smile-forcing -ooh, what a life- gets an extended edit service by shan & gerd janson, who cut away some of the fat and make it fit for fun on contemporary dance-floors. the flip side sees them remixing and sandpapering -heaven- into a disco-house interbred (filters and looping mandatory). to quote john lyndon: -disco sucks? you never heard that from me.-
