dating back to the fledgling early days of the label tales from the second moon by apogee was the first of many peacefrog releases by dan curtin. as with dan’s other early releases tales from the second moon ‘s angular dancefloor groove borrowed from the original motor city blueprint with a melodic sensibility that was drenched in the kind of yearning melancholy that suggested either pain of a heartbroken lover or the brittle dislocation of someone who longed to be transported to a distant galaxy. the acid, strings and complex rhythms contained on this ep originally released in 1993 were soon to become dan’s trademark sound. limited stock available. so be quick!

rod modell returns as deepchord for his first solo release on astral industries since inaugurating the label with his sought-after ‘lanterns’ ep. consisting of two stunning long-form pieces split on one side each, immersions¿ captures the emotive, halcyon sound that rod has long become synonymous with. opening with glistening ambient textures, ‘immersion i’ grows into an 18-minute piece of deep rolling dub techno. on the other side ‘immersion ii’ paints pristine soundscapes of soft, lapping waves, underpinned by submerged pulsations that rise to the surface to continue its deep space explorations. two highly refined and inspiring tracks that sit on the apogee of this sound.

the ep is opened by detached with it’s dominating, repeating tom/percussive low-end sound. the frequential spectrum is filled up by other percussive elements and reverb-filled effects, which give the track a spacious feel. oxidian starts out in your face with it’s droning and repetitive synth. the track evolves into an abstract apogee with intense synthesis before it breaks down again, allowing for a smooth mix to be made. sphere closes down this 3-track ep on the b-side and does so with lots of fast changing hi-hat and ride patterns and one sharp sounding synthesizer, which makes it a perfect b-side closing track. once again a great showcase of sustainable modern day electronic music by invite’s choice!

unslaved s punjab is a journey through three unconventional club tracks, hear genres entwined, sounds broken down and set free in the most spell-binding way. first track punjab is an eight minute creeper built from insane drum patterns and layered with an eerie, yet blissful melody. with an almost ambient quality, punjab is an off- kilter yet perfect. on the ip, b1 apogee is a dark masterpiece with the rawest, yet most striking of characters. a track that wouldn t have been out of place in early dubstep or grime circles with a spine-tingling bass line, apogee has that sparse, stripped-back feel where listeners discover hidden elements on each listen. exploring the murkiest corners of electronica, apogee is an intense mover that sets a high standard for the release.

awake represented a high-water mark for scott hansen, the san francisco musician better known as tycho. described by hansen as, “in many ways, the first true tycho record,” awake announced the arrival of tycho as a full band, and it found hansen streamlining the group’s sound, focusing on the drums and aiming to capture the energy and power of the group’s live set. the story of awake arrives at its natural conclusion with this 12” of remixes, on which hansen’s songs are re-interpreted by producers who make the songs their own while retaining all of their core elements.

*bapteme de l air* keeps the pressure up throughout as it steadily rolls out its sharpened kick and thick, propulsive snare before reaching its rattling, mechanical apogee. *ready pour le tour* unfurls behind off-kilter clicks, tightly swung hats and sax stabs while astute dynamics build a rich and cavernous atmosphere. the disco tinged *plein les mirettes* sets a rousing warm-up tone from the off with a dense kick and clap pinning down flecks of crowd chatter and shimmering metallic signals before dana ruhs spectral revision of ready pour le tour casts a murky glow over the original, blooming until its close with thickening strings and addictive knocks and claps.

for nearly a decade, tycho has been known as the musical alias of scott hansen, but with the release of awake – his second lp for ghostly international – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like hansen than drawing from his influences. this is, in many ways, the first true tycho record.

the descent of man ep is the third and last part of a trilogy on vinyl dedicated to charles darwin studies. this final chapter is focused on the darkest side of electronic music and his impact on human psychology. as charles darwin studied the evolution of physical and mental traits, we want to show how obscure, trembling and aggressive sounds generate an increasing sense of agitation and loss while mild and gloomy atmospheres can relieve the body and brain, achieving a peaceful state of mind. dont be afraid to move into a shady space. this is not the end even if it could be.

as hot as ever the new ep from our siberian disco friends is finally landing into theomatic’s catalogue. the title track solar wind is a rhodes driven hands-in-the-air early night anthem: simple yet powerful, just the way we like it! the flipside features an offbeat cosmic number “planetarium” which sounds like a perfect soundtrack for some colourful sci-fi cartoon about the early years of space exploration, with all those rockets, flying saucers, stars and comets with long tails. the bonus track (available as a digital download only) is named after the soviet moon exploration robot vehicle lunokhod 2 (’moon walker’ in russian) which was sent to the moon in 1973. being rather minimalistic at the begining it slowly evolves and reaches its apogee closer to the end with calm and beautiful melody which leaves the listener in a peaceful mood
