daniel brandt, co-founder of acclaimed german ensemble brandt brauer frick, is set to release his second solo album for london imprint erased tapes on october 12th. titled channels, the new record follows the release of the london and berlin based producer’s solo debut eternal something from 2017. the seven-track lp is brandt’s biggest statement yet, with the album’s thrilling avant-garde framework interweaving chord-driven techno, orchestral flourishes, rich electronic textures and hints of dark cinematic pop. following on from eternal something, which captured a contemplative kind of isolationism, with channels brandt set out to create an album that captures the essence of minimalism whilst lending it to a more playful context. after performing and recording steve reich’s six pianos in a group of six, brandt began regularly composing long meditations on the piano, something that permeates the sound of the new record. its frenetic energy and shape-shifting identity was also born out of touring with his new band eternal something — comprised of brandt on piano, drums and synthesisers, pascal bideau on guitar and bass, plus florian juncker on trombone — and a desire to translate both the sound and spiritual unity of their live shows in which musicians locked together to create an intriguing meld of expansive works.

following on from the release of fba21 collected works 1996 -2017, which was released november 2017 matthew puffett decided to wrap up the project, with a handpicked selection of artists to remix key tracks from the compilation. amongst these figures are some significant influences on puffett s early years the set includes kirk degiorgio, whose reworking of ‘cross dissolve’ reimagines the track in full machine mode, serving up a slab of driving techno for the main room.

2016 was a banner year for dirtybirds founder, claude vonstroke. he debuted his get real alias with green velvet in the winter, and followed up with another number one single in the spring with the rain break. he celebrated the 10th anniversary of whos afraid of detroit to kick off the summer, and finished in the fall by being crowned americas best dj by pioneer at a ceremony he shared with all the fans at the dirtybird campout. after a relentless touring schedule the first half of 2017, claude hit the studio with a couple ace producers, will clarke & sébastien v to collaborate on two giant singles for the works well with others ep. tiny tambourine is the product of will clarke & claude working together. its a bit of a misnomer, as tiny is the last word to describe the heavy bassline which starts to form immediately at the tracks outset. continuing to build over crisp and heavy beats and outbursts of drama before dropping back to the burly bassline, the result is monstrous. will clarke has been on a dirtybird hot streak having released 3 solo eps, 5 singles, an appearance on justin martins album, as well as a brand new collab with shiba san on the bbq compilation and a full takeover on the birdhouse radio show. on the flip side, claude teams up with one of dirtybirds freshest talents, sébastien v, for daylight dark room a light, melodic tone contrasts with a dark and funky acid resonance to create a truly unique masterpiece. the mysterious sébastien v was also featured on the dirtybird bbq compilation with his super-hot track funkulate, and there are rumors floating around that he is actually someone from the core dirtybird roster sporting a secret alias.

originally released as a limited run cassette on low jacks editons gravats label in 2017, we now get an official vinyl pressing via l.i.e.s. krikor kouchian serves this killer soundtrack to the documentary arabie saoudite: les liaisons dangerousness where the french tv program focuses on the saudi royal familys support of wahhabism and the wests appeasement of saudi foreign policy, kouchian underlines and accentuates the content with a brooding blend of mirage-like electronics and minimalist drum machine geometries. a deviation from his previous works and he moves into appropriately darker synth territory with this one.

legs 11 was formed when sigmund floyd, of palace of pleasure fame, joined forces with torstein dyrnes from the now defunct playstation duo tøyen, and mysterious bedroom musician nils tveten. during a karaoke-fuelled haze in the seedy parts of oslo, they discovered a shared love of synth pop, post-punk, new wave and house music. drawing on these influences, the band has created a diverse musical universe, ranging from dark repetitive guitar driven tracks, via infectious pop gems, to deep yet melodic dancefloor-orientated grooves. in 2017 they were joined by multi-instrumentalist audun severin eftevåg, who also brought a new instrument into the band: the saxophone! the “another wave” album is hand-picked tracks from their latest works, focusing on a more dancier approach. the house and nu-dance influences of today is mixed with heavy influences from 90’s uk indie-dance acts like the shamen and the madchester scene, and hints of new wave from the 80’s.

repress !! students red axes are very excited to present the first part of their new project called: trips, a multi media venture combining music, film and travelling across the globe in pursuit of extra ordinary collaborations. niv arzi and dori sadovnik are seeking to discover new grounds and sounds, and to record local musicians, indigenous instruments and present workshops for youth music schools. in march of 2017, the israeli duo touched down in africa for the first time, and set up camp in both ethiopia and ivory coast, yielding in africa, a triple header ep which features three slices of contemporary body music, with both east and west african musical motifs. the project will always present a musical release, on vinyl and digital, that was created on the trip, accompanied with a documentary, showing the whole journey.

with many writers a theme develops in their works that, over time, reveals color and definition previously unseen, not just a new perspective, but a new understanding. “lofeye” is a concept album and personal testament that philadelphia rapper lojii (fka uhlife) has been piecing together over the last three years, giving only hints with 2015’s no ebola, 2016’s dutti, and 2017’s acclaimed collaborative album due rent with producer swarvy on portland-based imprint fresh selects. in lojii’s own words, “lofeye is about working with limited resources and making the highest quality life out of what the f**k you got. it’s when you’re ‘lo-fi’ by circumstance (not just for aesthetic) but your aim is always higher. in essence, this is an lp about being rooted in the dirt you come from but reaching for the sky above you.”

the second of march’s trio of killer polytechnic youth 45s is a mighty extended piece of slow building berlin school-esque electronica extended over 2 sides of a 33rpm disk, recorded by adam leonard, initially from a batch of 18 tracks recorded at varying times over the last six years.
“entkommen” is his first release for the label here, and both artist and label rather liked the idea of one extended track across two sides of a 45, whereby the listener must flip the disc at a half way point to continue the piece. it struck us as increasingly unusual and works a treat here...
adam has amassed a number of acclaimed releases in varying styles, and across a number of esteemed labels over the years. last year’s full band release “invaderband” being shortlisted for a northern ireland music prize 2017 and was 6music recommended. not to mention previous releases in collaboration with the owl service and p.g six.

recorded while gerald was in jamaica working on a project with lee perry in 1980. the master tapes of the four tracks that were recorded at the harry j sessions were only recently discovered. utopia was the only track that had been given a final mix back in the day. it was released on 7- on the black star liner later in the year and then reissued on partial records in 2014. the other tracks were never mixed until early 2017 when this task was undertaken by dougie wardrop. as well as mixing jerusalem (gerald did a later version of this tune for rej forte s jah works label in the early 1990s), working for the dollar and constant spring , it was decided that utopia should also enjoy a fresh mix.

boris bunnik is no stranger in the world of electronic music. he released several albums and ep’s under a variety of monikers since 2007 on labels like delsin, shipwrec, frustrated funk and his own transcendent imprint. fauxpas musik welcomes him for a new project called severnaya.
originally hailing from the island of terschelling, the most northern and remote part of the netherlands he now made a piece of music dedicated to this special place. severnaya means north in russian and refers to the bright frozen landscapes of the northern archipels. boris often plays with the influences and elements of ambient in his music. if we have to believe the man himself, polar skies is his most personal sound trajectory to come from his mind. drum programming is scarce and what remains is a lush and profound listening experience floating on scapes and melodies. we clearly hear his roots and intentions represented in the airy, tranquil sound design of this new album project. things sound spacious, and life is at ease in these melancholic compositions. crispy crackling percussions and icey pads place you in the midst of a resonant arctic landscape. you can hear influences drawn from producers like biosphere, pub, brian eno but we also hear more contemporary influences from modern day film composition but most of all we here boris his own signature. the tracks were composed over a couple of years (2015-2017) in a more contemplative mindset. at some point this selection formed a consistent piece of music and as a result you hear his most personal and fragile works to date. fauxpas musik is proud to release this new project in 2018. written and produced by boris bunnik aka conforce at the pasadenaoceanlab studios special thanks to family, friends and fauxpas musik for their support. this release comes in 180g vinyl and a hot foil stamping on the cover. vinyl tastes better...

music from memorys final compilation of 2017 sees the release of the double album 1 by 1, which brings together the works of american experimental musician geoffrey landers. during a period spanning from 1979 to 1987, this denver, colorado based multi-instrumentalist, composer, record producer and engineer, conceived several solo albums. only two of these, the ever decimal pulse and habitual features along with the single breedlove were ever released on vinyl. being heavily involved in the local industrial/punk/new wave scene and wanting to create a recording studio available to record artists regardless of their financial circumstances landers set up the packing house studio in 1981. this analog 8-track recording facility was located in a former slaughterhouse in the stockyards of denver and was a place of significant activity for the next three years with the studio releasing recordings from numerous artists most notably allen ginsberg.

music from memory return with their penultimate ep of 2017, this time with four tracks drawn from virgil vincent work jnrs little-known cassette only debut from 1987, fast forward. following on from a previous compilation of works taken from one of virgils collaborative projects as the duo workdub, this album under simply vincent, reflects a more stripped back and raw musical approach from the st. louis musician.

same speed sambas are back to celebrate the sound of the summer in 2017 in their very own unique way. following on from last year s now hugely sought after debut, they have dug even deeper, searching out for more obscure uses of brasilian rhythms and coming up with two dance floor delights â&#128,&#147, one from denmark and another from right here in the uk â&#128,&#147, giving them once again, that unique same speed re-touch. samba operator takes a rare live recording of one of the uk s finest soul acts of the 80s biggest hits and re-works it into a mostrous tropical club anthem, while numero dois goes down the samba-not-samba route taking a danish 70s girl band and giving them some very warm disco treatment. the result is something very contemporary sounding that ll fire up the dance every time. all same speed releases are limited, hand-stamped vinyl-only affairs, but also be on the look out for the occasional re-work of more contemporary artists, available for free download as a little treat, to pimp up your dj sets this summer.

for record store day 2017 razor-n-tape presents icarus, an original song by lovebirds, with remixes from tall black guy, moods, and jkriv in a striking double 7inch package. giving the shine to their 45 series for this years record store day, rnt welcomes back lovebirds aka sebastian doering with a slice of chilled-out analog soul. although primarily known for his nu-disco and house productions, lovebirds is a seasoned hand at all things deep, and icarus shows the smoky late-nite side of basti s skilled production style. an all-original tune, icarus layers jazzy vintage electric pianos over restrained but head-nodding percussion, with galliano s soulful vocal soaring above it all. the ever consistent tall black guy delivers a 90 s-esque boom-bapper of a mix, with an added verse from 80 s babies for good measure. moods works the track into a slo-mo stomper on his mix, complete with stuttering synth bass and driving percussion. and rounding out the package is rnt s jkriv, with a beachy stripped-down retro-boogie remix perfect for those warm-weather months to come. each mix gets its own side in this double 7inch pack, with stunning full color artwork, making it a truly special package perfect for both collectors and djs alike

bondage-music head honchos pornbugs prep the labels next release for early april comprising three original tracks and a remix from mihai popoviciu. since 2006, german duo pornbugs have been pushing their minimal yet ambitious dance floor orientated house music through clubs across the globe, with their label bondage-music acting as a catalyst for forward thinking music. bondage-music also works as an outlet for other talented producers including romania’s mihai popoviciu and inmotion music signee markus homm to further develop their sound. fresh from a string of early 2017 digital releases from frink and sous sol, april sees bondage-music’s first vinyl offering of the year, kick started with the subtle and melodic cut “when you are gone“, which takes a deep groove and laces it with a plethora of soft synths and atmospherics. mihai popoviciu then reworks “when you are gone“ into a different entity, rewiring a headier groove into the track with raw-defined hats, building further tension with tight synth stabs and ethereal pads. vinyl only track “innocent“ then takes tribal tinged percussion to new depths, fuelling it with booming kicks and flourishing chords, further intensified by swirling vocals. a pure dub aesthetic then shines through “maritza“, as saturated drums and a rumbling low end provide the skeleton for swelling synths to meander alongside spiritual vocals, closing out the package.
