throughout ibadan records deeply-rooted new york history and its ongoing transcendent surge into the future, there are certain special moments in house music history to acknowledge. this brings us to our 138th ibadan records installment by kerri chandler. kerri chandler was one of the many artists who benefited from jerome sydenhams artistic direction. the two initially met in 1991, when sydenham was a part of the a&r team that signed chandlers debut single to atlantic records. after sydenham founded ibadan records in 1995, the two collaborated on several groundbreaking projects that stand as a testament to house music history and to their long-lasting friendship. chandlers early career evolved through illustrious house remixes and productions. tracks like drink on me, shoe-b-doo, while were young and aint that a bitch truly exemplify the trailblazing and original innovative spirit of kerri chandler and the birth of his signature sound. presenting new york chronicles vol. ii

when we started the bunker new york label in 2014 there was a short list of artists whose music we knew that we wanted to get out into the world. lori napoleon, aka antenes, was high up on that list, although at the time the brooklyn-based chicago native had yet to release her recorded music at all. five years on, after acclaimed records on l.i.e.s. and silent season, residencies at issue project room and bell labs plus a busy global touring schedule as both a dj and live performer, we are proud and excited to present loris ante meridiem ep under her antemeridian production moniker. she tells us that the antemeridian project is a special outlet for her more melodic synthesizer compositions and the name antemeridian refers to morning light and the meridian lines of the planet, the view you would have from above if you were already in the sky/space/seeing the atmosphere also from a great distance.

by now, the world is familiar with the extensive works of monsieur dimitri from paris. his prowess as a globetrotting dj and taste-maker for over 20+ years, his reputation for the finer things in life, his sartorial style and of course most importantly his infamous remixes and disco edits. isn’t it odd that until now, there hasn’t been an official home for the man’s stellar reworks? it just doesn’t make any sense. this is exactly the reason that he has decided to set up this brand new venture - le edits records. naturally, a high standard of quality is present with all le edits releases across the board - from sourcing 100% virgin vinyl used for pressing to the mastering through tape, to the beautifully crafted and designed tip-on sleeves that were popular with record companies in the 1960’s and 1970’s, to the wonderfully imagined graphic design that adorns said sleeves - dimitri has overseen every aspect of this, his first label.

at the third new interplanetary melodies astral journey stopover, it was mandatory to catch an italian project deeply inspired by the sun ra visionary realm, expressing contemporary trials of hybridising jazz with artful electronica. so ra toth and the brigantes orchestra landed on vinyl grooves for the label, after having previously appeared on the likes of mathematics and berceuse heroique. behind the sound, we find the elusive and unpredictable genius of the well-respected producer marcello napoletano.
nim received the distorted sound signal from napoletano taken over by the egyptian deity born from the lips of ra. who knows if those noises were coming from a parallel dimension, outer space, or some otherworldly sphere...? submerged in dark bottom waters, the stormy waves of the acid sea are made of convulsive afro-flavoured percussion with sharp synths looming out like the ivories of some freakish abyssal creatures.

lefto (belgium) and free the robots (california) found themselves on tour together a year and a half ago and had the wise idea to do a record together with the beats they were making from inspiration collected along the way. fast forward to the present, and that idea has grown into karavan - an album of international exotic melodies and heavy rhythms - that reflects the sound gather through their years of consistent nomadic touring.

“here come the horns” is the second studio album by the hip hop group delinquent habits. formed in east los angeles in 1991, the group are known for their latin-tinged rap, which is both melodic and hardcore. their first self-titled album movlp1338 was executive produced by cypress hill member sen dog and featured guest appearances by sen himself as well as puerto rican new york city rapper hurricane g.
their second album, “here come the horns”, again featured sen dog as well as sen’s brother, pioneering latin rapper mellow man ace. the album was also produced by sen dog and paul stewart. music videos were made for “this is la” and “here come the horns”.

largely sequencer-based composition practices opened up barera s usual hand-playing approach and allowed him to create rich and melodic, yet precise and powerful techno. -the opportunist- conjures images of arriving in darkness, taking what you can, and leaving quickly to avoid detection. -discipline- is barera s full-on workout, with all the rushes associated, itself very much a product of discipline. -a new future- suggests an optimistic if uncertain outlook, a world where anything is possible, while -last glacial maximum,- which refers to a period in the earth s history when ice sheets were at their most recent maximum extension, represents a somewhat bleaker view. the musically kindred spirits behind massachusetts-based mentha records are ideal partners in this project, warmly embracing barera s wide-eyed techno concepts.

its hard to think of dutch wonderboy franky rizardo without inmediately associating it with his massive contributions to the defected catalogue or his broad spectrum of mainroom hits including collaborations and remixes work for some of the most important names in the game. this time he proves his versatil nature by submerging himself into a more underground vibe, the type we learned to love so much at off headquarters. we didn t take long to decide once we heard what he had in store for us, the tracks were loud, sexy and intense.

in the 1970s the american composer henry flynt started a series of pieces under the title >new american ethnic music<. in so doing he worked together native styles of music such as blues, country or hillbilly with electronic production methods to make something altogether new. so far in germany it has never been attempted to rework folklore electronically for a compilation. however, this picture changes if one redefines the idea of who the population is. incomers have brought new >national anthems< to germany, which means - even the portuguese fado, the african gnawa, the croatian klapa or the vietnamese quan ho are these days at home in germany. with the cultural project >heimatlieder aus deutschland< (native songs from germany) founded by former spex editor mark terkessidis and label manager jochen kühling all the various styles of traditional folk music now found in germany has been collected. thirteen of the songs recorded for the project have now been transformed by contemporary electronic producers to present a >new german ethnic music<. but why remixes? for one thing electronic music has recently focused a lot on the past (ghost music, hypnagogic pop etc.) – electronic editing is well suited to follow the effects of the immigrant music which the >imaginary national anthems< has created. furthermore the projects instigators were curious how >electronic musicians< would handle folk music and folk songs which is a hugely difficult task. to this end artists were sought out who could get along with the idea of each music style and who are known to already have experimented with the human voice. the results are as varied as the music styles and djs involved. some melodies remain completely intact while others are abstracted beyond recognition. margaret dygas associative approach ensured that she presents a polish song about a girls arranged marriage with a claustrophobic feeling. with his remix of the marrabenta of mozambique mark ernestus has continued the rhythmic experiments he is known for with jeri jeri. thomas mahmoud translated gnawa into dub and finaly ulrich schnauss turned the song of the italian chorus of >donni so< into a hymn for the horizon-expanding power of migration.hopefully this compilation will also expand some horizons.

soul jazz records returns with their most successful series to date, new orleans funk. this new instalment subtitled two-way-pocky-way, gumbo ya ya and the mardi gras mambo features more classic new orleans funk in all its forms.

knox is the band brainchild of brother-sister duo nic and eliza coolidge. hailing from boston and new york, the siblings released their second ep, here, on december 3rd, and it is a big step forward for the band. formed less than two years ago, in march 2011, knox finds themselves working with the likes of john tejada and kuxxan suum on this release, and the outcome is stunning. here is five-song set full of ice and echoes. it runs as close to the third rail of impersonation, but flies away so quickly that knox sounds contextual and perfectly fresh. the influences from james blake is clear: the swooping, bomber bass and half-timey compressed dub beats, here could also easily be an inventive b-side to the latest how to dress well album. but, with the limited scale, interspersed remixes and foundling status in the scene, i would say it is likely a more impressive feat. the ep as a whole is desolate. expansive spaces filled with cold little beats and vocal washes, exploring in the course of five songs an icescape aesthetic with a sense of place usually reserved for full-length albums. the remixes blend so seamlessly that i didnt even realize they were during my first, casual listen.

jakob seidensticker and bardia salour are running a special path since almost one year, releasing only unique tracks on underground cutting edge labels. we know jakob from the first collaboration on sic008 with wareikas wonderland remix, and since the first meeting we knew there was more to develop together. this time seidensticker comes along with bardia and danilo schneider. both were already tested for the first 2 issues on enough records. the result is a new powerful release for sleep is commercial.

feted kosmische synthesizer wizards from cleveland oh, emeralds, have never had any of their music remixed before. let alone having the title track from their acclaimed 2010 album reworked (twice) into a floor-filling behemoth by daphni (aka dan snaith aka caribou). >we toured together in 2010 and since then ie always wanted to play their music in my dj sets. so i did my own version of this track<, says snaith. >is one of those tracks that whenever i play it i can feel the energy in the room lift.< luckily emeralds were equally enthusiastic and so this unlikely hybrid see the light of day. …or rather the dark inside of a club.

pop will eat itself (they took the name from a feature in the nme) was formed in 1986 and became one of the most well-known grebo-acts before changing their style to alternative dance and industrial rock. in 1996 they disbanded the group and each of the bandmembers concentrated on solo projects before shortly reforming the band in 2005 to play some shows. these gigs were notable from their instant double live albums which were available only ten minutes after the gigs. in july 2011, graham crabb announced a new line-up with him as the only original member.
