austrian imprint luv shack records is opening up yet another chapter in 2018 by welcoming irish house and techno aficionado and misfit resident andrew johnston aka moodtrax and his own-brand of super warm and brooding sound to their stable. the perfect illusion ep opens up with never can get away, a steamy & dreamy cut that sucks you right in to its lair of thick pads and trancy sequences, which are contrasted by a carefully programmed synth bassline and a stomping house beat. the title track immediately evokes early chicago warehouse jam feelings, with bass sequence, detuned chords and classic drum patterns all oozing of old analogue roland machines. the meticulously arranged percussions section and a set of eerie strings and pads make this one definitely stand out from the crowd. running number starts as a no-nonsense house track, carried by a beefy unisono bassline and a 16th note heavy drum pattern, yet it transcends into 80s territory with the help of a deeply emotional chord progression that might just make you forget you re in a club. berlin duo longhair give running number the luvremix treatment, really digging deep into that chord progression and building a melody and synth-bell infused italo-house track around it that should make this years festival crowd weep and rejoice alike.

part two of the ep features the motor city drum ensemble remix, and the original “in a silent mix” version from 1999, a track out of its time when released on allen’s sole record “black voices”. a long serving dekmantel veteran, danilo plessow was there from the start. after compiling the first selector’s compilation last year, mcde turns tony allen’s masterpiece in a jam, with added house beats, giving the funk number the edit treatment. the final mix sounds like the kind of track you would hear mcde play in one of his sets as he’s firing up the heat. the organ sounds and trumpets are left high in the mix, to create an unforgettable hook that resonates throughout, in complete motor city style.

following hammer s stand out release on loft records last year, canna gets the remix treatment by four killer producers. first up, lauer adds his trademark flavour to the already outstanding title track canna , bending the mind with an acidic top line and classic korg m1 bells.the a2 sees supreems take the techno edge off man ray replacing the drums with a more electro tinged style of rhythm, whilst echoing the synths into the back of the mix to let the drums take the foreground. flip it over and you get two reworkings of manaka . firstly, domenic cappello switches the breaksy flow of the original for a more club ready kick to compliment those stabs, in turn elevating the breakdown to greater effect. in contrast, lord of the isles dives deeper into the breaks feel of hammer s original, adding glitchy samples and oddball synth lines to take this one an even more interplanetary tip.

band from trinidad & tobago, led by the internationally renowned lead guitarist guitarist and songwriter michael boothman. tabu and so dey say were recorded in 1972 and would remain family trees only recordings. limited edition of 500 copies worldwide! . family tree represented a new generation re-discovering trinidadian folk music forms and giving them a contemporary treatment. family tree infused old shango rhythms in their new sound and were the first to experiment with steel pan fused with standard instrumentation. tabu is a cover of a cuban standard made popular in trinidad by 1950s calypso musicians cyril diaz and his orchestra and so dey say was an original composition by david boothman. although they only ever recorded these two songs, the band toured with derek walcotts trinidad theatre workshop and forged long standing musical connections with some of the countrys leading musicians.

having recently appeared on bosconi records and altzmusica, daisuke kondo is a producer on the rise at present. this outing on vibraphone adds fuel to that particular fire with four distinctive cuts that push to the outer edges of house music without losing sight of the groove. -hold on to love- is, on the surface, an upbeat, disco-infused house jam, but there s a certain trippy approach kondo takes in the processing department that edges the music into a different head space. -life- meanwhile gets gritty and bass heavy at one end of the frequency range, and airy and melodic at the other. -feelin blue- gets even dustier and scratchier with its sample treatment, and then -fallen star- lays down some unflinching machine beats with wonky, distant piano licks.

initially released on sonia e. pottinger s highly respected high note records in 1981, sonya spence s sings love lp was relatively overlooked at the time her album came out. sent on her final journey in 2007, the one-woman band leaves us with a legacy of exception. however, time and a small first pressing has made it an object of desire for collectors, deejays and lovers all around the world. and, though it was shamelessly bootlegged throughout history, it is the first that time that this bliss of an lp gets the official reissue treatment on wax, with the love and respect it deserves. beyond classic tracks let the flow on baby, where is the love and the reggae gem fantasy, this 10-tracker abounds with treasures, some of which cannot be found on the internet.

estetika 001 introduces the first release of the new imprint of jason patrick and pat king. the label s objective is to release a signature style of timeless techno. berlin-based artist mekas (originally from buenos aires) delivers the first 3 track record, nodata. a1 starts off the release with lebreton featuring qik. thick kick and bass anchor a beautifully warm hypnotic synth riff that filters meticulously throughout the track working hand in hand with a subtle atmospheric pad and spacious reverb touches to create a uniquely huge engulfing sound. b1 is the second track titled marshfield, a heavy tune for peak time. its kick, toms, and bassline form a rugged groove for its dark synth, which along with the mysterious pad capture the essence of the track while ride cymbals glisten and automate throughout. b2 is the third and final track, nothing, which continues the dark and mysterious vibe of the release. an acidy mid-range synth part works along with an ominous pad and well programmed hi-hats, claps, and rides with just the right reverb treatment to provide space and depth to the track.

wolf müller & versatile label head gilbr give the remix treatment to zombie zombies hippocampe - the first track from their recent livity lp. a long time fan of the band, jan schulte (under his wolf müller alias), delivers 2 interpretations of the track, combining heavy krautrock influences a la can with a distinctive b-boy twist. gilr takes hippocampe in a more minimalistic direction, with heavy drums laying the basis for a dubbed out journey.

ostgut ton’s berghain mix series returns with volume 08 by fiedel. available on 12” vinyl are four new exclusive tracks by electric indigo, stefan rein, rroxymore, boris & fiedel. few figures in berlin dance music can claim as lasting and multifaceted a presence as longtime berghain resident fiedel. a former resident at berghain forerunner ostgut, the veteran dj and producer is known by heads for his decades-long influence on left-field techno and bass music in the german capital, particularly as one half of celebrated production duo mmm with errorsmith, and co-operator of the legendary wax treatment parties together with mark ernestus of hard wax and basic channel fame.

after popping up on a various artists release last year, ugly frankie makes good on his connection to the vinyl only label with a full fat ep of chunked up, funked out house business for sunny climes. there s a dusty, rolling tone to the tracks on offer here - the crafty edits, nimble sample treatment and inventive layering creates a vibe you can lose yourself in all day. these aren t just straight up dancefloor rollers either cow boogie bumps and slides with a low slung swagger that will have you popping at a slower tempo but they re all prime for the get down. for some dusty, soul-laced cuts produced with flair, look no further.

this is the second release from london duo dark circles on their own dc trax label. the first release was given play on radio 1 s george fitzgerald show and supported by the likes of erol alkan, skream, justin robertson and eric duncan. dc trax 2 sees the first release given the remix treatment by an armoury of heavyweight remixers. phantasy records kamera provides a tuff techno work out of y, emperor machine takes inpiration from his old bizarre inc guise and making use of his old mpc, takes march back to the 90 s raves. the package is finished off by lord of the isles tripping out the well in 2 strong remixes. this will be a limited vinyl release in february which has already earned a play on 2manydjs beats 1 radio show 2x2 .

the third release for la freund recordings comes from amsterdam resident beraber. consisting of four strong and diverse tracks and a jazzy, piano-heavy remix by chicago house legend vincent floyd, sun ritual works just as well in the club as it does at home. after working on hiphop and downtempo electronica under different aliases, this ep sees baris akardere venturing into up-tempo territories, marking the debut of his beraber moniker. all tracks were written and produced during the last two years, combining digital instruments like the korg m1 and yamaha dx7 with analog gear like the roland juno-6 and korg ms-10. kicking things off on the a-side is title track sun ritual, a positive and warm tune with lush chords and arpeggiated synths. after a surprising outro, it gets the remix treatment by deep house pioneer vincent floyd, who adds multiple layers to it and delivers a stunning, dreamy eight-minute take on the original. the flipside opens with ugly, a soulful club workout with a deep bassline, rolling drums with crisp hi-hats and a hypnotic melody. next up is introspect, a serious electro-tinged cut with heavy juno chords building up tension as the track evolves. rounding it up nicely, forest rain treats us to an intimate broken-beat affair laced with rhodes chords and field recordings from bali.

carmen villain & jenny hval’s borders has gotten wonderful remix treatment from our favorite klare lewis. also biopshere has done a rare remix of red desert. both remixes are out now on limited edition 12” (only 300 made, and no repress).

nigeria’s kingsley bucknor’s ‘just u and me’ lp gets the long-awaited reissue treatment from melbourne’s left ear records. after cutting his teeth playing with fela in the 70’s and releasing two afrobeat lp’s kingsley travelled the globe before finding himself in london, it’s here that he laid down 6 distinctive electro-funk tunes inspired by african rhythms and music he’d heard through his travels in the states and in europe. originally issued on kinglsley’s own kab records in ’85 and according to kingsley the release was well received at the time, but due to constraints of international marketing the record remained mostly unknown outside of his homeland. fast-forward to 2017 and the stage is set for a new global audience to appreciate the distinct sound of kb.

on his first solo ep for phorma, italian dub explorer hydergine provides two original tracks, accompanied by a remix by informa records deepbass. the ep kicks off with the powerful and mesmerizing entheology, while the second track japanese dreams takes a more placid approach creating alluring soundscapes. on the flipside, deepbass, who previously appeared on phorma010, gives entheology the remix treatment and transforms hydergine original into an epic 9 minute journey. sleeve design by new york based artist sebastian lemm. vinyl only.

acid paulis second album ‘bld dropped earlier this year to a rapturous reception. martin gretschmanns trippy opus took in various stops around the musical spectrum, yet remained committed to quality dance-floor tracks that refuse to follow any particular rule book. this collection of remixes of the albums a side (hence the name) only adds to that achievement - bringing yet more new flavours and takes from some of the most exciting names in the underground. ‘abbebe gets a rework from sainte vie who brings his trademark ‘multicultural electro sound to the albums opener, and produces an ecstatic mid-paced groover for the heads. oceanvs orientalis drops a similarly exciting rerub, finding new angles and dimensions to the track ‘baris. tel avivs red axes turn up the psychedelica for the duos amazing dissection of ‘ayam - deep sounds immersed in acidic tones and tight-yet-wonky arrangements. lastly ‘majid gets the treatment from label co-head nico stojan who produces a sleek and spacy remix that will delight the early morning ravers.

ressort imprint’s fourth output “four cuts on hurting” gets a decent treatment from four well established remixers. pfirter, cassegrain, blind observatory and label head ekserd deliver their own takes - rsi011 therefore is aptly named “more cuts on hurting”.

on the a side, attack random is given a remix treatment by the advent and possession is remixed by knobs. on the b side, surgeon has given an analogue reinterpretation to attack random. lastly, we have il futuro e nostro (the future is ours), remixed by ralph mirto.

it does not happen that often any more that unreleased music from 40 years ago surfaces. even more unlikely it is that the songs put on tape are such treasures. the voltags were right at the forefront of the local washington dc new wave/punk scene of the late 1970s. influenced by kraftwerk, gary numan, the clash, and the b-52 s, they have released only one 45rpm single during their existence. but during the time span of not even 18 months, they had recorded enough material for an entire album - but the songs remained in the can. this is the story of the voltags, a short-lived band which could have become famous and mentioned in the same breath as the aforementioned music legends of that era if their songs had been released back in the day. dive in and enjoy the sound of the voltags, it is truly special. we here at perfect toy are thrilled to be label to finally release their work and we sincerely hope that they are finally getting the appreciation they so richly deserve.

two of the best tracks off the brasileira lp get an updated dancefloor treatment by selvagem, carrot green and joakim. those who experienced listening to the original maria rita version of cantico brasileiro nº3 (kamaiura) on the dancefloor know it s such a thrilling experience that could only be better if the song was a bit longer. at the same time, it didnt make much sense to mess with the original. having these thoughts on their minds, the selvagem boys augusto olivani and millos kaiser (the minds behind selva discos) had an insight while discussing the reissue of the brasileira material with singer maria rita stumpf: why not hit the studio and remake the track? also, why not ask someone like joakim, known for his exquisite taste and brilliant production skills, to remix lamento africano/rictus? it would be the perfect package.

following their much acclaimed surprise debut, vermonts sophomore longplayer presented another set that rewards deep listening (allmusic) and a mix of simplicity and richness whose result is a feeling of spaciousness and a thrilling sense of weightlessness (xlr8r). stripping away even more percussion than on its predecessor, ii saw marcus worgull and danilo plessow zooming in on ambience, texture and sonic cohesiveness, allowing each electronic voice to come into focus (pitchfork). now, ii remixes puts the beat back into the mix, thanks to iconic artists dixon, i:cube and wassermann who each develop their own irresistible groove out of the immersive source material. as one of the albums most highlighted cuts, dschuna gets the royal treatment by innervisions head and internationally revered selector dixon who proves his strong command of the dance floor with a hypnotic ride that surrounds the soaring sounds of the original with tribal esque vocals. the instrumental version drops the chants, but retains the enchantment, all elegant rhythm and gorgeous strings. versatiles i:cube, legendary producer and dj in its own right, brings a distinctly parisian touch to the spectral skorbut, whose sci-fi-imbued widescreen aura gets reimagined as laser-gun-wielding space funk machine. meanwhile, wolfgang voigt aka wassermann condenses paradigma’s roaming synths into pulsating trance swells on his stomping krautramatrik mix.

what about this love is not only a famous larry heard song but now it s also a house music label. the first release sees the detroit outsider javonntte and the berliner-italian deep88 on a real underground raw house song, matching the detroit soul house with the rawness and liveness of the italian producer, creating an epic vocal track, something that could have been made in the golden age of house music. on the flip there s the melchior sultana treatment, a name that is rising release after release thanks to his works and nothing else, playing all the kinds of instruments and being able of using sequencers and drum machines creating a perfect balance between a real musician and a serious house producer, add to all this a deep88 remix and a javonntte amazing dub version and the watl01 is served. more to come.

following on from the first part of heatwave remixes, mike maurro digs deep into this legendary groups catalogue to bring us another duo of stellar reworkings. this time their jazz-funk classic the groove line from 1977 gets the mm remix treatment and is backed with their evergreen slow-jam always and forever. 2 deeper cuts this time but the quality is just as high as maurro really understands this music and knows what to use and how. fans of heatwave will undoubtedly adore these new mixes and people who are new to the group will be amazed they hadn’t checked out the legendary mr. rod temperton and his super talented pan-european band of musicians before! naturally, everyone is welcome to this party...
