montreal-based producer priori has a new release on the horizon with midgar’s “pareidolia.” the release coincides with the label’s 9th anniversary. the title is inspired by the phenomenon of recognizing familiar patterns in random objects, which priori artfully incorporates into his sound design. imagine anthropomorphic water droplets ascending to a higher plane of existence.

vinyl only , after a short break unison wax returns with a brand new four-track collection of music from the bossman himself, diego krause. the berliner took a year off in 2016, concentrating on other projects and letting the label have a rest, but now he’s back with a refined sound. unison wax embodies a more sophisticated aesthetic, with warm analogue hues and subtle textures to push things forward a little. after all, we couldn’t come back from a break without progressing, huh?! first out of the blocks is ‘nihilate’, which helps introduce this updated unison wax sound, crisp beats lock us into a groove in conjunction with a dainty selection of analogue effects and a funky little b-line. diego carefully adds new elements as the track progresses, keeping you interested right until the end. next is the title track, ‘rituals’, which kicks off with an insistent bassline and spellbinding percussion that keeps you gripped from the off. he throws in some claps to add energy and muted pads, which slowly rise to prominence, giving the track an emotive atmosphere which wraps itself around you. one for the eternal dreamers… flip the record over for side b and ‘dysfunction’, which turns things grimy. marauding beats and bass conspire to create a morose atmosphere. diego’s penchant for super sharp beats is present here again, and the energy builds slowly but surely. a new layer creeps in every few bars and sucks you right into the track’s lair. expertly done, and impossible to resist, this is darkside pressure at its best. ‘eudaimonia’ rounds things off, with more deep grooves. initially propelled by minimal percussion, the track really gets going when more beats are added. it maintains a laid back feeling and, while the drums are solid, the atmosphere is mostly quite soft with swirling pads keeping things light in the top end. when they fall away towards the end of the track we have a rather gnarly close to the composition, as the beats and bass take over. and there it is, the welcome return of unison wax – smooth and refined for 2017…

echocords colour sub-label continues this november with sephs teleport ep, featuring three originals from the argentinian producer. buenos aires born producer sebastian gelante aka seph has been kicking up a storm in the techno world since the turn of the millennium releasing material on labels such as dumb unit, harry klein, items & things, his own aula magna imprint and now he joins the echocord roster on sub-label echocord colour following recent releases from luke hess and stephen brown. across the teleport ep seph delivers his signature smooth, dubbed out and intricate style and&#8232,,,,,,the title-track takes the lead with billowing pads, bumpy off kilter rhythms and choppy stab sequences galore before delta strips back the vibe to raw drums and murky synth textures while ethereal pads ebb and flow through the composition. motion rounds out the package on the flip side, taking a straighter approach rhythmically this time round to allow the snaking dub stabs, rumbling low-end tones and evolving hats to take the lead throughout.

echocord returns late june with a new release, joel alter under his jor-el alias, entitled ‘tilted reality’ and comprising three originals from the swedish artist. currently based in copenhagen, sweden born producer and dj joel alter is a name synonymous with the contemporary techno scene on both his home turf and across the globe, his back catalogue to date features a long player for the uncanny valley imprint, solo ep’s for d’julz’ bass culture, sweatshop and collaborative works for kontra musik alongside henrik johnsson amongst much more. this time round though we see alter return under his jor-el guise under which he first started releasing material on dj hell’s internation deejay gigolo imprint. up first is title-track ‘tilted reality’ laid out over seven minutes with a slowly unfolding dynamic feel, encompassing spiraling atmospherics, distorted rhythms and blooming stab- sequences. ‘elevation’ follows and takes a more direct groove-driven approach via straight four-four percussion and hooky bass chops, whilst tension building pads and fluttering dub echoes gradually build around the foundation. ‘solitude’ closes out the package deliving into deeper realms with soft ethereal dub chords, acid tinged leads and emotive strings.

repress 2023 - robag wruhme returns to kompakt after his much lauded thora vukk album on pampa. with donnerkuppel he resets the focus firmly on the dancefloor. with its dramatically beautiful ethereal hookline the title track is a perfect follow up to robag s previous outings on kompakt extra. one for those magical morning hours... wemmel is another fine example of his stunning craftmanship. it s floating freely between advanced deephouse and 2-step, dubstep, techstep and whatever step you want. polch dutto boils things down nicely towards the end with some lush soundtrack-like ambience.

with the following release, the scandinavian brings a mystical sound reminiscent of the past times of the vikings. the opening track does not come in the classic 4 to the floor robe, the title creates with the brute drum beats and classic acid elements a rhythmic entry into the ep. while listening, the imagination of a cold, merciless and raw dystopia is awakened to the listener. niclas erlandsson manages to create a lot with few elements and brings a serious industrial sound to antimodus.

the fourth release of selva discos is one that has been bursting audiences into flames for a good while. barbatuques, a well-known brazilian group of body percussionists, adapted -baiana&#769,,,,,,,,,,,,- back in 2005 (first released on the -o seguinte e&#769,,,,,,,,,,,, esse- album) and since then it became a staple of their concerts, getting crazy reactions from the children to the elder, being featured on soundtracks and sampled by trap duo tropkillaz. the original is a modern folk song from bahia composed by maria do carmo barbosa, but it was the mouth harp sound and the stomping beat on the barbatuques arrangement that imprinted its trademark sound - like the first lightning strikes before the storm. a couple of years ago, jan schulte, the german producer known for his taste for tropical drums (and also for using a few different aliases), heard the song and decided to add an extra punch to it for his dj sets: more drums, taken from a library record of -drumdrops- (hence the title). in his appearance at 2017 s dekmantel boiler room stage as bufiman, he dropped it to the crowd s awe, and it s been like that wherever its played - believe it, it s been tested all around. so now for the first time -baiana&#769,,,,,,,,,,,,- is issued on vinyl. it marks the second volume of the brasingles series, a new series on selva discos dedicated to releasing loud 12- singles with the original song on the a side and a rework on the b side, to please both the dj and the listener.

t follows features a stunning, electronic-driven score, heavy with pulsating synths and dread in equal measure. it was composed by the renowned musician disasterpeace. this electro, 80s influenced score is a character in itself in the movie, and will haunt the listener long after the film has stopped rolling.

repress - hot on the heels of aus recent releases from breach, huxley and bwana they ready their next offering from irish duo and long term label affiliates bicep. aptly timed for the festival months, their just ep follows up a series of self-released titles which include collaborations with ebony and midland and is an impassioned bundle of broken beats, shimmering synth lines and rapturous piano chords. the title track kicks things off and suffuses a broken kick and snare combo with a poignant sequence and heart-rending synth strings. a vocal refrain drops in and out throughout a lucent breakdown before () lays a soft, filtered croon over a swelling piano motif. tension is astutely balanced, never quite boiling over and keeping the listener pinned before () drives a tough, gravelly kick under gentle flecks of acid and rich sweeping pads.

taevalaotus & joel tammik - both artists featured on this release have been making music since the early 2000s. they have for long entered the endless realm of analog synthesizers and embraced hardware focused creation. the source material for this collaboration was recorded on a single weekend and meticulously arranged into this four-track ep during a year that followed. whether complex chord textures, deep analog bass or soaring pads - it is all fused into the tracks with minimalism at its core, allowing you to take some time off and drift deep into the world of the idm and electronica. lastly, a dub interpretation of the title-track >sfäärid< by aural imbalance shifts down a gear and allows your mind to move even deeper into almost a hypnotic state, perfectly rounding out the material captured on this ep.

2023 repress!... the latest release in the perpetual masters series, which sees the m-plant catalogue being remastered and re-released, is the the classic the greatest dancer. a disco styled techno track which was originally released on m-plant in 2001 with a live version of the title track from motor, detroit. this remastered version is accompanied with a new disco styled techno track called dancer.

afterhours. is back with ukrainian underground talent silat beksi. as expected, the 3-tracker appropriately named -transend ep- displays a fine selection of stripped-down music prone to dancefloor introspection. the title track transend shows silat s talent for creating steady, bare-boned grooves, filling the sonic space with menacing atmospheres, chopped vocals and bizarre modular squelches. flipside s monoliza follows the same stable groove principle but applies quirky sound-design techniques reminiscent of the golden ages of microhouse for an added swing. elephant dream , the ep s closing track, swaps the four-by-four rhythms with breakbeat-infused constructions, adding just the right amount of sway for its deeply floating atmosphere.
