never underestimate the power of a good bassline. mark du mosch certainly doesn’t. this veteran from the harbor city of rotterdam let’s his vicious bass line creep up on you from behind on 202 ac ra. a dark and jacking club belter with clear chicago roots. the five track ep the heavens may be his debut on sohaso, du mosch has been releasing music for over fourteen years on a variety of respected underground labels, such as moustache, dekmantel and royal oak. his versatile style draws on sounds that evoke strong mental imagery and a sense of eternity, which clearly shows on the introspective resonance delay (she) on the b-side. in which a melancholic melody is supported by muffled slow motion beats. the beautiful artwork on the heavens ep is by joost stokhof, an amsterdam based graphic designer who is known for his love for detail. which makes him perfectly suited for du mosch’ subtle and well crafted dance tunes. in a normal world you would open your ep with the title track. du mosch chooses to close with it. the heavens stays true to it’s name. a harp like melody that washes ashore as foam from a greyblue northsea that calmed down after the storm. heaven indeed

glitterbox resident dimitri from paris and remixing pioneer tom moulton present their retouched mixes of ron hall & the muthafunkaz modern day soul classic ‘the way you love me’ now available on 12” vinyl. initially released in 2006, marc evans provides velvet-smooth vocals complimented by background harmonies and timeless disco production. for his iconic t.s.o.p. remix dimitri from paris enlisted the help of salsoul orchestra founder vincent montana, jr. for fresh strings as well as a new full orchestra arrangement in his version, and here he gives it an update with his previously unreleased ‘dim’s t.s.o.p. version - dimitri from paris glitterbox retouch’. tom moulton’s retouched sweet-sounding ‘philly re-grooved remix’, previously released on harmless in 2013, comes laden with guitar riffs, dreamy harps and xylophone for even more instrumental glory. two disco legends come together under one stunningly soulful glitterbox release leasing new life into this timeless record.

the american pop duo ‘made in france’ has been making waves on the parisian stage with their retro style evocative of the great girl groups of the 60 s (the shirelles, the ronnettes, the shangri-las). this album follows the release of music video clips for the singles -beau brown- and -burn-. musicians and songwriters bathed in the pop music of the 50 s - 70 s from their native usa, johannah cantwell and laura woody take us through the ups and downs of their lives in paris with joyful melodies and self-deprecating humor. the album has undercurrents of surf rock and motown, with riffs from organ, harpsichord, sitar and timpani supporting their texts, which are decidedly of their time. produced and arranged by franck hedin and nathalie loriot (the shuffles, lafayette, howlin’jaws…), recorded by fred carrayol at mercredi 9 studio in paris, the album was both mixed by fred and etienne colin.

having given us a taster of things to come back in september 2016, with the pressing matters single, the cyclist returns to hypercolour with a brand new, full length album. and as the title suggests, sapa inca delirium leans heavily on south american mysticism, not just musically, but in the visual imagery that the eleven-track album paints so well across its various tempos and rhythms. from the tropical burst of mood setting opener, go back to the steamy and pacey percussive flow of inhale/exhale which features regular collaborator tanaya harper on vocals, the cyclist’s fourth long player is crammed full of intriguing atmospheres and soundscapes. antiexist, with its down-tempo rolling snare fills and ethereal gregorian chanting segues effortlessly into a blind girl drinks ayawaska, a suitably discordant and hallucinogenic skit that ensures the album flows into the more rhythmic cuts like skateboarding in the jungle and mirrors (the second album cut to feature harper on vocals). even the traditional jazzier vibes of when we all break down featuring joni are kept rugged and boisterous, with heavyweight bending bass, choppy breakbeats and fx’d ambience amongst the smooth jazzy chords and sweet vocal delivery. sapa inca delirium is one of those albums that will reward on repeat listen, such is the diversity of style on show here, and the detailed and wide eyed curiosity offered up across the long players fifty three minutes.

very limited 10- release! new electro talent rolando simmons delivers two charged remixes of penelope’s “what i gotta do” as the follow up to their debut ep on redcurls. simmons starts out with a gushing yet dreamy electro version of wigd, complete with shattering snares and claps, keeping lush chords and whirling vocal samples firmly in place.
the b-side hears a slower perhaps more seductive side of roland taking on the title track. a pulsating bass line leads you into an intimate room of sound filled with warm breath sand possessed vocals, complimented and caressed by a slinking synth melody, spun in mystery by the help of careful harp strings. download code included.

musically and emotionally, superpitcherÆs third full-length studio album, the golden ravedays is a one sound autobiography that exhibits the skill, feeling and style that the artist has honed over a period of twenty years, musically, and forty-plus-years, emotionally. and full-length it is: the golden ravedays is an epic album of 24 tracks that was released in january 2017 and is stretching over 12 respective chapter albums during a one-year period. the seventh piece of the golden ravedays puzzle will be released on hippie dance in july 2017. number 7 of the series introduces two further tracks of the sound adventure that superpitcher is taking us on this year.

side a features andy, music made by superpitcher in memory and admiration of a pioneer artist and his works. andy warhol looks a scream, hang him on my wall, andy warhol, silver screen, can t tell them apart at all, andy walking, andy tired, andy take a little snooze, tie him up when he s fast asleep, send him on a pleasant cruise, when he wakes up on the sea, be sure to think of me and you, he ll think, about paint and he ll think about glue, what a jolly boring thing to do. david bowieÆs lyrics about andy warhol mirror the groovy yet deeply moving emotion of this track. the music superpitcher imagined here is a pleasant cruise in itself and once you wake up from it, you will for sure think of andy. side b features yves. the track starts with a long introduction of harp music and then gently evolves into one of the more fragile and poetic pieces superpitcher has created thus far for the golden ravedays record. similar to andy this track is dedicated to an artist, yves saint laurent. what is clear in this music is that there is an intense understanding of the suffering yves saint laurent lived throughout his life as an artist and fashion designer. as only superpitcher can, he translated that emotion into this beautiful and touching piece of music.

next up on hell yeah is -the most balearic record i have ever released- according to label boss & it comes from japan s disco don max essa which features a four part track, themes from the hood, the cad, & the lovely, on one side of vinyl, and two more on the flip. essa was born matthew bruce and the uk artist has now been releasing his blissed out beats on labels like feel music, electric minds, bear funk and is it balearic? recording for a decade. a prolific producer whose big hits like panorama suite/uptown vibration (is it balearic?) from 2010 have long been in the hell yeah boss s record bag, essa first approached the label with a bunch of tracks. a good correspondence alchemy ensued and together the artist and label decided to put out the most timeless 12inch possible. the exquisitely ambitious themes from the hood, the cad, & the lovely is almost 12 minutes of serene ambient synth work that is like a soundtrack to a hot summer s day. heavenly chords sound just like a breathy female vocal and as they come and go, one finger piano tinkles add real emotional beauty and gentle twinkles shimmer in the distance. half way through lazy drums propel things along at a loveably lethargic pace and immediately place you on the beach. on the flip, saguaro is just as organic and beautiful, but has tumbling drums, wooden hits and soft claps as well as essa s magical synth work all bathing your soul in warm rays. b2 buran chime is perfectly horizontal and expansive, with tinkling triangles, angelic chords and scattered hits and harpsichord sounds all radiating effusively. this is timeless music that will calm busy minds now and forever.

its been nearly a year since he featured on robsoul, under his v.i.c.a.r.i. alias, but sheffield house don tommy vicari jnr returns to the label with another beautifully creative ep. opener ‘breff’ is a coming together of polar opposites. whilst harps glide across the prodigious pulse of its acidic bassline, open hats shimmy and snares strike. somehow, all together, it works to perfection. the quaking bass, grinding stab and ‘get dahn’ vocal serve to create a stripped back tool across the opening bars of our a2. however when the beats drop its secret is revealed within its killer groove. as the lights come on tommy rolls out one final jam in glittery disco cut ‘in the night’. a last seductive slice from the northern powerhouse and one that leaves us hotly anticipating his robsoul return.

after repeatedly being visited by a strange messenger in his dreams while on tour in the islands of greece, toby pazner became consumed with a vision to tell the stories of theolympians through music. chosen by the gods as a messenger for not only his musical gifts, but for his unique position at the center of the daptone family, toby built a home studio from scratch and employed some of the top soul musicians in the world to help him breath life into this album. the result is a dramatic and cinematic journey to the outer limits of instrumental soul music, built on a foundation laid by the same craftsmen who’s bricks built the legacies of sharon jones, lee fields, charles bradley, the budos band, and menahan street band, and painted with lush strings, harpsichord, harp and horns. the olympians is destined to be the instrumental gem of the year.

while pheek may have been in operation for as long as anyone can remember within minimal house and techno, cleymoore has been most productive more recently thanks to his pluie/noir label. following on from last years seikou single on xquisite, here cleymoore and pheek link up to deliver some densely packed, production rich jams that keep the spirit of mid-00s clicks and cuts alive. the beats themselves may be slender slices that carry the energy of the tracks, but it s all in the infinitesimal details in between that the true magic of this music comes alive.
