romare is a young london to paris transient crate digger, collecting dusty snippets of undead voices and antiquated rhythms. once in his underground lab, these pieces of yesterday are chopped, spliced and reattached to create the sound of tomorrow. this ep explores the connection between the history of african and african-american culture in the form of collage to create musical conversations between the past, present and future.
samples of songs, speeches, interviews, field recordings and films were carefully chosen and rearranged: rhythms from africa are integrated with voices from harlem, conversations about race and identity between writers and ethnomusicologists are constructed, speeches from activists are conjoined with the voices of prisoners. this process of combining pre-existing material has inspired three >meditations on afrocentrism<.
in keeping with black acres genre dodging output, romares merging of traditional rhythms of africa with the contemporary tempos of footwork and house is a bridge between the tradition sound palette of africa and future dance rhythm.

despite the doors being closed on dissident in 2009, former boss andy blake has been anything but quiet, with his world unknown imprint bringing the acid and ebm sounds of his night of the same name to the world. now hes started another label, in plain sight, which looks set to bring more esoteric house sounds to our ears, with the first release coming from the hitherto unknown youngtee. the first track, >dr chocolate< fuses the kind of oddball low-slung sounds and spoken-word samples that in flagranti have been masters of for years, with jazzy keys and 808 cowbells which hint at a subtle chicago influence. the classic house influence continues of >perfect model<, which combines misty chords with an 80s pop groove, falsetto vocal sample and synth jam solo which comes across as alternate universe michael jackson track. as youd expect from a label curated by blake, its house music, but not quite as you know it.

hailing from perth, australia, this talented and prolific producer is no stranger to the music scene. following his first taste of an akai sampler to drop film samples on the intros of songs in his metal band, the dirty whittler, rregula eventually found himself drawn into the world of drum and bass and formed one half of bad robot in 2003, a monster collaboration with future technique and viper superstar, phetsta.

mr. mageeka makes a welcome return in the wake of >different lekstrix<, the mutated funky banger that caused straight up mayhem on many dancefloors the world over, upon its release via numbers last year. the much-anticipated follow up, penned for release on phuture shock musik, comes in the shape of >vintage malarkey<, which sees the east-londoner offer further next level shenanigans. employing a similar formula as its predecessor, this one is stripped down and quintessentially hypnotic - instantly luring you in with a looped god made me funky - esque groove, over a brisk swinging rythm, whilst occasionally throwing you off-guard through the introduction of angular synths and offbeat claps, as well as an inspired collage of samples that maintains the quirky nature of the production throughout. the single comes backed with >de congo<, a funky conga-laden number, that is enhanced by an addictive fusion of west african guitar licks, kalimba stabs and frisky percussion, though the real icing on the cake being its meandering trumpet hook, altogether coming off like a live high-life jam. early support from the likes of rinse fms scratcha and marcus nasty.

hotflush presents a special collaboration between two modern-day techno innovators: paul woolford and psycatron. both maintaining an influential discography on labels such as planet e, intimacy, tresor, and bedrock, they have come together to produce >stolen<, a nine-minute techno excursion. utilising relentless, throbbing percussion that sizzles over growling, acidic synthesis and carefully placed samples, its presented in three distinct versions, introducing filter-swept chords in the dub mix, and an even deeper submersion in the second dub mix that perfectly eclipses the raw temperament of the original.

chris duckenfield has done more than a few laps around the acid house track producing and djing since the late 80s, and achieving success through numerous music projects, rac on warp, as swag with richard brown through the 90s and more recently with his popular peoples front & duckbeats aliases. >i really do believe< joyously straddles the disco & house worlds, a rollicking metalic riff, soaring etta james vocal samples, a healthy dose of acid and a serious low end - constructed for sweaty basements & causing a major stir with a few choice drops at the recent electric elephant festival in croatia. new and super talented producer chicagodamn provides a superb remix on the flip, taking the key elements of the original to a strobe-lit warehouse destination in fine style!

the second part of the ki split series is a feature of our homegrown talents christian loeffler and steffen kirchhoff. the two friends are part of the ki family since the beginning (loeffler was responsible for the first release on ki and kirchhoff for the third). both artist have a close connection in sound aesthetics and atmosphere, since they still inspire each other every day. on the ki split series 2 you can listen to christian loeffler and steffen kirchhoff experimenting with beautiful samples and underlining the whole piece with their unique sound structure. both in their respective very own romantic approach to deep, melancholic techno music.

white rabbits giovanni damico is a house producer from italy. his style is hard to define as all tracks have their own original concept. it is the love for music that you can instantly hear in giovannis perception of house music. house music is dancemusic and the feel in the drums and use of samples make sure of that. this is house music at his best when listened to this 3 track vinyl. be amazed at the subtle crossover between blues and house on the b2 track.

after a short production break, the russian techno duo easy changes (denis cast & kilrill silas) are back with a 12 inch on the berlin/london based label, mean records, run by cesare marchese (cesare vs disorder) & federico benedetti (onirik). the lion is also a good drummer fits in nicely with the labels love of minimal techno productions that feature original sounds, moody melodies and deep aural landscapes. easy changes gained recognition in 2007 with two back to back hit releases on foundsound records. in 2009, they were the first ep from nervmusic, a moscow based label that focuses on unconventional techno started by cast, silas and friends. seated comfortably between the avant-garde and the dancefloor, the release has something for everyone. the title track, the lion is also a good drummer is an epic, crawling minimal techno production filled with stripped down percussion and abstract found sounds perfect for after-hours. on the flipside is the uptempo, quirky and tribal burlesque, replete with spliced vocal samples, snares, cymbals, bleeps and claps. for the burlesque remix, french producer doubtingthomas shows off his lifelong obsession with percussion and its rhythmic allure with the addition of a trippy drum solo midway through the track.

possibly the biggest release on off in 2011 so far! off 26 introduces two new talents to the label: berlin-based friends daniel dexter and nhan solo. they deliver >our thang<, a dead-funky discofied summer tune, based on samples which all lovers of 90ies hiphop will dearly remember. on the flip side, labelowner andre crom & martin dawson deliver a deeper, more linear interpretation, based around a mighty bassline and an epic slowdown in the main break. second remix comes from luca lozano & sacha robotti, who score with a raw and toolish groove, adding further elements of the sampled song and additional sweet vocals.
