dj harrison is richmond va-based producer and multi-instrumentalist devonne harris. the son of a radio dj who introduced him to the world of record collecting, harris grew up with music, progressing from violin, to high school drum-line, to the jazz studies program at virginia commonwealth university. he also continued working with other instruments and developed an interest in sampling. his development as a producer at first, without a computer or sampler came first learning to replay samples on the drums, piano, bass or guitar. dj harrison finds himself inspired by local musicians in the richmond scene thats as diverse and nonexclusive as they come. among rappers, producers, punks and bluegrass bands, he falls within reach of an expansive pool of musicians to collaborate with. he lives and works in jellowstone, a house turned recording compound occupied by his band mates in butcher brown, a garage punk jazz funk group. hazymoods, dj harrison’s stones throw debut, was recorded there completely on tape, where the living room functions as a communal recording studio

having already made a strong connection with the ever-excellent udacha label, russian duo gamayun now take their talents to hesperian sound division to unfurl more of their delicate, richly musical creations. -golden ratio- leads in on stunning jazz piano refrains, edging threads of percussion into the mix with poise that sets gamayun apart from the rest of the crowd. -ascension- takes things in a more cosmic direction, all swooping and swooning synth lines beamed in from a distant star. -untitled- has a more lazy, blues-minded attitude, while -uvolnenie- edges a little more techno influence into the mix, but truly this is space-age music played by musicians with genuine chops.

dc175 comes courtesy of alias, a new project comprising of harvey & ryan mckay, who are two acts who have previously released solo material on the label. harvey mckays last appearance was in late 2016 when he dropped the mad drummer on a-sides vol. 4 whereas ryan mckay s last outing was in 2015 when he appeared on a-sides vol.3 under the name skiver. this is the first collaborative project between the scottish duo under their new moniker alias. the ep opens with pentatonic , a tough sounding track that has been designed for the forward-thinkers. the truth follows up sharply, with vintage piano stabs and a vocal that gives the track abounding energy. the on-point percussion leads you on a trip of pure rapture. the release closes with the apocalyptic dream taker, which is teeming with sinister vocal action and hostile synth work and a sublime way to sign off.

portable is alan abrahams, a south african born artist, producer, and celebrated live act who has released his minimal wares on cult labels like perlon and live at robert johnson, as well as his own süd electronic label. abrahams’ first lp for !k7 is his most personal yet, taking the artist’s given name for its title. the album places portable’s distinctive vocals front and center, showcasing some very real song writing skills next to abrahams’ own piano playing, in addition to a few choice collaborators.

the other man is a unique collaboration between up-and-coming young finnish producer janne tavi the flag-bearer of ibadans next generation nd acclaimed chicago house vocal legend robert owens. this ep is a superb rare gem that bridges global distances and combines a broad range of influences. the result is lush layers of sound, relentless energy, and intricate piano riffs and stabs. owensÆ poignant vocals seal the deal on this new house classic, taking it to sublime heights. the vocal dub kicks the heat up a notch with owensÆ seductive vocals and taviÆs stunning keys and arrangement. on the b-side, new york house legend kerri chandler makes a long-awaited return on ibadan. first up is a spirited vocal version with a dynamic bassline. chandler follows it up with an instrumental take, pared down to a tool and keeping the infectious groove going with deep and satisfying flavor.

sunlightsquare s first single of 2017, oyelo, is a mixture of jazz, cuban and house music in its most authentic form. starting with moody latin-jazz piano and sun-drenched live percussion played by master percussionist giovanni imparato, the track is driven by the classic house beat of the tr-909 - the legendary 1980 s drum machine. ronnie scott s resident cuban singer rene alvarez delivers the impassioned vocals, followed by the main man claudio passavanti s heated montuno piano riffs, which combine seamlessly to create a blissful, dance-floor experience. it s a perfect marriage of organic grooves, lush beats and soulful vocals, joining the dots between different generations of latin dance music.
for the b side, london based, japanese producer kay suzuki transformed the original track into his signature psychedelic journey in 2 parts. his by the sea mix takes you to the havana beach with its synthesiser generated waves & seagulls right from the intro. the stripped-down beats and vocals are smoothly laid out with warm analogue synth textures, giving more space to claudio s tasteful latin-jazz keyboard improvisations. in contrast, the drum dub goes to the opposite side of the spectrum, all the musical elements have been removed, focusing solely on the live percussion and the raw tr-909 beat, all dubbed out with tape delays for a classic cosmic dub treatment.

tutti hill’s ‘when the going gets rough’ was listed on the label of her arock single in 1964 but the record actually played ‘whoa whoa, baby take it slow’. at last this gorgeous mid-tempo dancer from ron miller and lee porter makes it to 45. the flip is a piano and voice demo from the same stable but garrett saunders’ magnificent baritone makes the song a must-have. what a pity he did not record more.

after the success of closer to freedom in 2014, chicago legend dj jes returns to tardis records with the between the lines ep, featuring two lost tracks from his personal archives and a brand new offering. opener æno foolingÆ is reduced to the bare essentials until an elegant snatch of piano and spoken word sample break it down further, when the track kicks back in with a vengeance everyone in the room will know all about it, but it remains subtle enough to work the day after as well. on the flip, æbetween the linesÆ is tougher and dubbier and will do some serious peak-time damage, whilst new track lost is a cut-up banger for the floor and a perfect dj tool. all tracks have been meticulously edited and rearranged by label owners eli verveine and oscar schubaq in order to extend the grooves and maximise dance floor impact.

2021 repress!!! x-ray records catalogue is as under the radar as it is rich and ahead of its time. releasing between 1992 and 1994, most of the label s outputs were produced by raymond castoldi. although people primarily know castoldi for being the music director and organist in madison square garden, he also has a lesser known chapter of his life. in the early 1990s, raymond released 6 eps on his imprint x-ray records. by coupling his musical education with a four-on-the-floor club pattern, castoldi managed to create a jazzy vibe with spaceous sounds and keyboard jams, all coalescing into a relaxing atmosphere that would eventually become the signature sound of 90 s deep house. in partnership with castoldi, kalahari oyster cult delivers the goods once again: 11 tracks from the x-ray catalogue over a 3lp for your deejaying pleasure.

the people in fog are back on sov! as smooth sky blue colour cat can represent, this ep has a smoother beat than the artists usual style. if you remember their previous ep with a darker colour, now the punching kick and identical house bass are gone and this ep is true showing off the producer s ability as a musician who can adapt to any kind of diversity. the first track last song has deep bass and atmospheric sounds, like a typical romanian loop, but after the long trippy beat when the piano sounds kick in, the atmosphere changes and brings back the emotion. the second track get funky is also truly hybrid version of house, while the combination of funky vocals and the endless hi-hat and shaker keep the groove tight and the deep down pad sounds mixed smoothly with the forest of beat make for a truly a unique character. the last track alright is a very joyful one, even though it uses a typical funky house vocal sample. its unique way of playing percussion and vocal keep the groove totally all-right

directed by acclaimed artist jr, ellis tells the story of one such migrant. starring robert de niro, the film winds its way through the crumbling hallways of the abandoned ellis island hospital complex, now home to jr’s unframed art installation. it’s a place that reverberates with the hopes and fears of those who passed through it, the echoes especially resonant today.
entwined with the narrative is a score composed by woodkid, performed and co-written by nils frahm. the delicate piano motifs of winter morning i culminate in a crescendo of strings, while the harmonium swells on the b-side are the foundation for de niro’s narration: an encomium for those who shaped modern america. there’s perhaps never been a more fitting time for this story, with all the proceeds going to the sea watch initiative, a non-profit charity dedicated to the protection and rescue of civilian refugees.

here comes argoman, the antihero of disco music. inspired by the 1960s b movie super hero argoman, the name literally means lazy man, however its also a combination of three italian producers names, who started the project about one year ago. the track chimicalissimo merges the vibrant rhythms of disco with the emotional approach of modern electronic music. its a peak-time dancefloor banger completely produced with analog synths and drum machines. the tune is a proper voyage between syncopated rhythms and heavy basslines soaked with synth melodies that often recall idm progressions. the dub version gives more space to a melancholic piano melody that culminates through analog arpeggios to an unstoppable build. black spuma remix finally turns the track into a slow burning disco monster.

earth trax is kruczynnski s take on strictly club material, yet channeling the very same baltic melancholy he uses in his other projects. following on from his 12inchs on rhythm section and dopeness galore, his phonica 12inch begins with lavventura, a deep yet glittering house production with a piano led melody we couldn’t get enough of, so we present two versions across the a-side. the main version is preceded by a fantastic dub version, shades of kerri chandler shine through on this one! on the flip his otherworldly interpretation of house and techno continues with nokturn and hg, both pad-rich, ethereal productions of the highest quality that perfectly compliment the a-side and round out the record in style.

after delivering the fh05, label co-owner pablo tarno is back at the controls with the fh09. the a-side features the more clubby cuts, ranging from the broken beat and dramatic jazzy piano chords of “horizons” to the more driving house beat and playful synth melody of ‘gunkan”. the b-side is all about the laidback grooves, “bitchplease” is a heavy dubby bass affair with serene pads that will lighten any mood, while “preemo” brings back pablo’s deep trip hop roots, closing off the record with a classy slowed-down number.

rich la bonte is a musician, writer and editor from upstate new york born in 1946. at age 11 he figured out how to record a piano backwards with his first tape deck and discovered monk, mingus and art blakey. in 1965 rich moved to ithaca, bought an electric guitar and started singing in garage rock band the huns. after the band dissolved, he moved to nyc and played bass and sang in the original cast production of the musical godspell. in the late 70s la bonte moved to hollywood with shari famous, released a a few 7” singles as dada2, and started flatdisk records, a vinyl subsidiary of dave gibson s moxie record company.

uffe is back with a two tracker that will set your pants on fire. the a side is a fresh take on pharaoh sanders 1974 cult classic love is everywhere an eleven-minute journey through broken piano melodies, layered vocals, partytime cowbell rhythms and heavy sub. the b side rytme version unfolds over eight minutes and is a dubbed out instrumental bomb of claps, hypnotic cowbells and added synth chords further building the suspense. peak time alert!
