smalhans is the fourth solo album by norwegian producer hans-peter lindstrøm, and his second album to come out in 2012. earlier this year he released six cups of rebel, which was a very personal album for lindstrøm and showed his more experimental side. now, this forthcoming record on smalltown supersound, finds lindstrøm back on the dance floor with six monumental tracks � classic lindstrøm style.
smalhans was mixed by his friend todd terje, who has also made extended edits which will be released as 12 inches. the album title is an old norwegian word and means scarcity or simply poverty. each track on the album is titled after a traditional norwegian meal. smallhans is lindstrøm at his very best, perfected by todd terje.

ancient future is the second collaboration between visionary pianist ryuichi sakamoto and electronic pioneer christopher willits. built around a series of piano pieces that sakamoto sent to willits after the release of the duos first record together, 2008s ocean fire, the six tracks that make up ancient future are entirely instrumental�and yet, they speak about the very essence of what it means to be human. as a whole, ancient future functions as a piece about the creation, acceptance and completion of ones fate and all of lifes experiences, following a trajectory through inner conflict, resolution and, ultimately, acceptance.

in june 2011 subtext recordings was restarted after a six year hiatus for the release of the second lp from emptyset, titled >demiurge<. this album represented a transition from the first two subtext releases, a pair of seminal experimental recordings from the groundbreaking duo vexd, switching path into a new terrain that allowed for the distortion and dissolution of the sequencer grid and shifted the focus of the label from the programmed to the composed.
through this development subtext recordings has evolved into a conversation between emptyset, the ex-vexd artist roly porter, and composer paul jebanasam, who has spearheaded the revival of the label. this new release continues this dialogue by commissioning both porter and jebanasam to respond to the material contained within >demiurge< and develop their own interpretations of the original album.

the next ep on germany s hello? repeat imprint comes from seuil, one of paris s most inspired underground producers. in terms of style, it is a match that could hardly be more perfect. hello? repeat has spent the past six years carving a niche for itself with eps from cabanne, audio werner and label co-founder daze maxim, plus acclaimed albums by bruno pronsato and kate simko. seuil, meanwhile, has put out a steady stream of ultra-deep 12-inches on labels like freak n chic and sammy dees ultrastretch. both specialize in a sound that is modern, understated and hypnotic. late call is exactly what its name suggests: a record made for the deepest, most tender portion of the night. the drums are slick and punchy, but the rest is woozy and romantic�this is one to put on when the crowd has stopped chatting and everyone s dancing with their eyes closed. topping it off is a vocal line made famous by diana ross but recited here by an androgynous diva: if you need me, call me, no matter where you are, no matter how far� dark, trippy and weirdly moving, this is one of seuil s finest tracks yet. >slow motion< strikes a similar chord but with a more subtle approach. here you notice seuil s rare touch for subtlety: in the absence of any real >hook<, he keeps the track moving with expertly sculpted drums, a warm half-melody and a gently propulsive beat. soft chords sustain in the background to create a balmy summer night feel. both tracks show seuil and hello? repeat doing what they do best: delivering something deep, functional and full of character.

dresdens cult label uncanny valley returns with the charming catalogue number six. following up jacob korns first artist ep for the label its c-beams turn now to continue the series of artist eps. break sls and sandrow ms project can be referred to as a true labels child. musically, both artists got to know each other only when the label was founded. for >strollin< they lend the vocal talents by tina slotta who is associated with uncanny valley as well. the result is an irresistible house-jam. easy vibrant beats are complemented by birds twittering, warm keys and tinas carefree lyrics. jackmates remix toughen things up and transfers the tracks with mighty detroit-chords into a real monster for the dancefloor. the slightly murkier >scrapyard< takes its strength out of the interaction between its vehement beats and the c-beams-typical sound excursions. finally, the instrumental of >strollin< rounds up the ep.
