multi instrumentalist and deep house master lars bartkuhn returns to utopia records following his nomad ep in april with a 10 minute masterpiece, an ode to the massai . an epic journey of such depth and positive spirit it perhaps deserves to render a genre all to itself. with its musicality, complex arrangement and phrasing massai is a timeless and personal statement from bartkuhn as he seeks the essence in what dance music can and possibly should be. as a young child growing up in frankfurt, bartkuhn penned his first pieces of music with a synthesizer and sequencer, bought for him by his parents upon realising their son s obsession with music. mastering the guitar as a teenager bartkuhn fell deeply in love with the music of pat metheny, keith jarrett and john coltrane and styles such as soul, funk, brasilian sounds, minimal, dance, and others which is heard in his music today. by the mid 90 s bartkuhn began to explore the deep and soulful side of house music and formed lamaya productions and the now legendary record label needs (not wants) together with his older brother marek bartkuhn and dj yannick. needs rapidly became a synonym for soulful, high quality music and while labeled a house music imprint it was lars input that lead the trio to explore alternative, and at the time unorthodox, musical influences that allowed for original textures and arrangements to be included in their productions. countless remix commissions followed and their sound travelled worldwide with works for francois kevorkian, jazztronik, ennio morricone, atjazz to name a few. to date bartkuhn has produced five solo albums all of which demonstrate a never ending creative flow of ideas and artistic diversity, complexity and passion. after some years away from the dance music scene, residing in brasil, lars decided to continue this journey on volcov s neroli records, followed by a 12- for alex bradley s phonica affiliated utopia records. the latter release, nomad has found its way into the sets of the likes of jeremy underground paris, hunee, antal, ron trent, rainer truby, bicep and mcde to name just a few. it s at this point that bartkuhn gives us massai...his self proclaimed finest work

gents & dandy s are finally back with a 3rd limited 12- vinyl release and this time it s an artist ep by the hands of the greece, athens based achilleas dimitracopoulos, better known as fog. he s contributed to the house music movement since the late 90s and has previously released on labels like noir music, dieb audio, apparel music, seven music, and just recently suena hermosa. collaborations and remix work happened for kindimmer, patrick zigon or even kruse & nuernberg to name just a few.

now in its second decade, with a steady stream of the most forward thinking and cutting edge techno productions, drumcode has one of the biggest selections of releases from industry heavy hitters, whilst not forgetting its future by bringing the newest talented producers into the limelight, where layton giordani is now a name firmly within that line up. the young new york based producer first had recognition back in 2014, and his debut release came via drumcode with his track rivington on the a-sides vol5 compilation in 2016. full force into 2017, drumcode has announced the release of layton s debut album with where it begins consisting of 12 original tracks, the album packs a punch when it comes to no-nonsense techno. successfully weaving relentless drums and catchy vocal hooks into a selection of thick, brooding, atmospheric tracks.

any disco dj worth their weight in vinyl knows the name donnell pitman, and until now this has been mostly due to his highly sought after work of the late 70s and early 80s. renewed interest in donnell has reached critical peak over the past few years, fueled by red greg’s feature of donnell’s seminal “love explosion” on joey negro’s under the influence vinyl compilation series and chicago’s numero group putting out long forgotten, unreleased boogie bangers “burning up” and “taste of honey” in 2015.
it was this refreshed enthusiasm that caught the attention of producer kumar mcmillian of chicago-based disco ensemble wings of sunshine. kumar’s group was looking for another vocal collaborator following their 7” debut release on star creature records. a casual introduction led to an informal studio session between the two culminating in a modern disco masterpiece.

having established himself through a consistent stream of quality releases for uncanny valley and the immaculate collection of rat life, credit 00 - real name alexander dorn - bring sthe heat on nyh81. these are recordings taken from his old apartment, and feature a heavy dose of reference to classic gertronica. from can to kraftwerk to neu! to (now) munich s dopplereffect, this is some really nifty classic electro.

exchange place is the dj collective that includes nicuri himself alongside joey anderson, dj qu and a producer by the name of art gallery. the name makes reference to a district in downtown jersey city, just across the river from manhattan, which is where the crew is primarily based. they released a 12-inch under the name exchange place with dj qu s strength music label back in 2010, and have dj d occasionally as a group around new york city. the new ep, immaculate inception, includes one track from each of the four contributors.

repress !!!radio slave readies a double a-side to mark the 100th release on rekids this february. having recently celebrated ten years, the consistency of music on matt edwards’ rekids is indisputable with releases from nina kraviz, mr. g, david morales, peggy gou and dj deep to name a few. aside from his a&r abilities edwards’ extensive understanding of electronic music is evident in his various pseudonyms. amongst these radio slave is easily his most illustrious and most fitting for the seminal label’s milestone 100th release. containing all the hallmarks of a radio slave production, ‘another club’ merges looped vocals with thudding kicks as echoing stabs and infectious hats work their magic. on the flip, ‘feel the same’ is a funky slice of detroit inspired house. early support from chris liebing, ryan elliot, dj hell, gerd janson, laurent garnier, dj deep, markus suckut..

unearthed by groove archeologist betino errera, this black gem was cut in paris in 1980 by american vocalist robert helms. his french career being rather confidential with releases under his own name as well as bobby helms or simply bobby, the lay down girl album remained a well-kept secret for decades despite the fact that it contained two very strong disco-funk tunes.

brainwaltzera debuts on film. the anonymous producer, whose work has has already received online approval from legendary british idm auteur aphex twin, offers up an extended ep for the berlin based imprint. in 2015 a soundcloud profile under the name user18081971 - now identified as belonging to richard d. james, commented on curious brainwaltzera upload quilat spring 1 outtake. the move prompted speculation as to who exactly is behind the music. exquisitely produced and executed in such fine fashion so as to decry pure imitation - there’s plenty to theorise here. regardless of their true creator - which will undoubtedly remain a secret for the time being, the compositions on film006 are of similarly high calibre. varied in approach and marrying both electronic & acoustic elements with ease, the six tracks that comprise the record range from yearning ambient segues and dreamy down tempo grooves to otherworldly krautrock and more direct, dance floor fare - but remain bound tight as a cohesive and functional body of work by a glorious, arcane musicality. whether weaving soft electronic tones in and amongst snappy breaks or detuned drum-machine strikes, the artist’s ear for acoustic harmony is perhaps the pervading theme across the six tracks that make up the aecoba ep, marking it out as an excellent addition to the film labels growing catalogue

afrika bambaataa, rapper, producer, dj from the south bronx, new york. afrika bambaataa is one of the originators of breakbeat djing and is respectfully known as the godfather of zulu nation and amen ra of hip hop culture. in 2007 has been nominated for induction into the rock hall of fame and in 2008 he has been honored by the bronx museum of arts. afrika bambaataa’s long career is pointed by many hits and masterpieces such as reckless, unity, just get up and dance and pupunanny. countless collaborations with artists such as ub40, james brown, boy george, leftfield just to name few of them. afrika bambaataa has recorded with many labels from tommy boy to capitol records and profile but it is with the italian label dfc (expanded music) that he has releases most of his recordings. bring it up is the new release on dfc label produced by dj/producer paul carpenter. this release includes three versions in big room/edm style along with a mega-mix and a full acapella collection of all previous recordings released by bambaataa on dfc label. two lyrics videos come to support the release.

robin de wolf delivered us three solid tracks under his new alter ego robert d . while un ni yo is a house track with a wavy sound and affective synths, the second a-sided track dommel is a banger that begins with a smooth intro that changes over into hard kicks and raw bass chords. on the b-side, you can find a more melancholic uptempo track that goes by the name of white s wisdom. interstellar funk tops it all off with a remix of un ni yo that combines the wavy sound of the original with synth-heavy electronics. an absolutly killer ep!

distinctive tenor singer linval thompson honed his singing craft in his formative years, growing in the west kingston ghetto of three mile, where he was associated with dennis brown, johnnie clarke and al campbell. a subsequent move to new york brought him into expatriate act hugh hendricks and the buccaneers, with his debut recording, ‘no other woman,’ being made circa early 1974 at patrick alley’s art craft studio. a series of other singles followed from his new york sojourn, but the return to jamaica in 1974 led to more noteworthy singles for stamma hobson, phil pratt and lee ‘scratch’ perry, with ‘jah jah redder than red’ and ‘girl you’ve got to run,’ both cut at the black ark for pratt, being the most successful. yet, it was all but a prelude to the breakthrough success he would finally achieve upon teaming up with bunny lee for ‘don’t cut off your dreadlocks,’ one of the most popular releases of 1975, a debut album of the same name, issued by third world in 1976, contained some of his most outstanding material, including the devotional ‘jah jah the conqueror’ and ‘long long dreadlocks,’ the romance thriller ‘black princess lady’ and the anti-rude boy opus, ‘cool down your temper.’

with additional successes under such labels as taub, latence releases once again on play label records for his fresh superheated ep. collaborating ideas from his teen years in belgium through the 90’s, with more progressive inspirations, latence has materialized a unique style, which is a celebration of timeless dance music and it’s continued influences on forward-thinking artists. kicking things off with his title-track, pablo flaunts a subtle build of off beat chords injected around playful and erratic acid house influences. a busy and varied concoction of sounds topped with provocative whispers. deeper amplitude is the second of this four track ep, and as the name suggests, we are provided with ample bass, accompanied by snippets of melodic discord and a boisterous snare, fearless and rhythmic. metastable lays a minimalist percussive foundation, sporting a retro 70s synth that steals focus with its quirky pitch shifts, a classic example of latence’s immense talent for blending influences across eras. latence closes with acido basic, an eccentric finale to this eclectic ep. using exotic vocal sampling centered around chemical compounds, he simplifies his percussive layers to a clean texture, which form the bedrock for his experimentations.

since 2015, james welshs contribution to phantasy as kamera has delivered a series of releases shrouded in mystery, injected with the personal energy of both a hardcore and club heritage. two eps, arc and ventoux, set a distinct tone, with the latter complimented by head-turning remixes from artists such as george fitzgerald, throwing snow, truncate and yaleesa hall. now, the key phantasy artist emerges from the shadows under his own name, in order to continue his uncompromising musical journey. returning with a new, two-track ep, standing/slip captures the finely tuned tension and euphoric release of welshs sound in arguably its strongest form to date, showcasing not only the dancefloor mettle firmly established under his prior alias, but a new sense of wistfulness that coaxes his typically outstanding machine work into altogether more reflective territory. standing throws listeners headlong into welshs formerly anonymous industrial complex, generating a churning, relentless rhythm offset with a dry female vocal that recalls the sardonic stance of vintage electroclash. following this, slip is an initially unexpectedly spectral diversion, transmitting a curious synth line into space, and receiving a choral, sombre frequency in return. without losing its emotive qualities, the track succumbs to a hailstorm of welsh’s sharp, potent drums, before collapsing in understated catharsis.

the name mondo has its roots in mondo movies, an italian movie genre born in the 60s. mondo movies are characterized by documentary-like content that addresses several topics from around the world (mondo). edizioni mondo label has the goal to produce music that is descriptive of concepts, images and environments. edizioni mondo is inspired by library music, a genre frequently used as theme or background music in radio, film and television in that very same period. numero 7 by the trusted in-house band odeon pushed all the typical and beloved mondo buttons. accompanied by version from roman ambient hitmaker panoram (see his album on firecracker for further reference) and label boss l.u.c.a. with one of his quirky dance mixes and the usual great artwork, this deserves a good place on every balearic bookshelf. keep your eyes open for the up and coming odeon album galaxies. good listening!

incl somebody to love ! surrealistic pillow, as the name implies, is one soft ridden, slightly mad piece of psychedelic san francisco folk rock. from its percussive intro of -she has funny cars- to the thumping mystique of -plastic fantastic lover- and the worldwide hit -white rabbit-, this album s one heaven of a trip alright! one of the essential albums of the 60s.

joining the unknown precept forces are c.g.i. records label head matthew wei- ner teaming up with christopher daresta as pyramid club. being known for their t.w.i.n.s. and anticipation solo activities, cyclic obsession comes as the debut re- lease of the four-handed formation taking its name from the eponymous venue which helped define the counterculture and queer sound of lower manhattan in the late 70 s.

tobias. returns to ostgut ton with his third full length eyes in the center and expands the musical narrative laid out by his helium sessions ep (o-ton, 2016). the berghain resident keeps exploring the vast modular synth-driven techno, experimental and ambient territories on a journey in-between genres. tobias freund is long established as an influential artist and has – since the early 1990s – been working as a professional producer, sound engineer, label owner and strictly live musician. besides his early solo projects (such as pink elln, metazone or phobia) he’s also been collaborating with dandy jack (as sieg Über die sonne), ricardo villalobos (as odd machine), max loderbauer (as nsi.), valentina berthelon (as recent arts) and atom tm to only name a few. with his vast experience, diverse output and interests, tobias. doesn’t tire to actively push against existing boundaries and explore new areas of electronic music.
