continuing their forays into the world of yesteryear grooves unabated, those pesky hell-dwelling lumberjacks are at it again, this time drafting in o boogie and red greg for some disco funk finesse for the smoothest get-downs. o boogie lords it over the first side, leaning heavy on a rich piano hook that hammers lower register chords over an incessant disco tick, while evergreen track >papa was a rolling stone< gets re-versioned in such a floor-burning fashion you will need asbestos boots just to get out alive. red gregs >inner rhythm< plies familiar tropes into a sweet instrumental groove that makes all the right moves.

the ep opens with >black jack<, a percussive, grooveled workout built around next up is >as much as this<, applying similar drum programming tactics with a raw shuffled groove but this time opting for an esoteric vocal line and smooth house pads to fuel a deeper melodic movement. highly respected bass culture, off and robsoul artist chris carrier turns in a remix of >as much as this< to follow, stamping his signature french soulladen house sound on the original cut. the track captures a 90s feel through its crunchy 909 drums, loopy piano hook and acid squeaks and bleeps.

summer has come early. the fog is literally lifting and willing the summer to come early with this excellent ep for metroline. lead track diggler’s job is a breezy house number with pimping keys and a beautiful bass bounce. there’s plenty of movement in the percussion and a light touch that just begs for summer to come. shout romance is a shade tougher with its up-front kicks and acid-tinged bassline. it has slow burn intensity that is nicely counterbalanced by smooth reverb-soaked vintage synths.the jackspot remix of shout romance really brings out the funk in those synths, underpinning that with down-the line percussion and skittering hats that give the track a real drive. rounding things up nicely is in the right mood. the track’s bassline is sticky, sweet treacle over which congas and vocal cuts are expertly sprinkled to create a tasty treat. it never gets sickly though… horns are deployed sparingly, and the track has the same cool as a cucumber minimalism that makes this ep pure pleasure on the eardrums

repress , unison wax 01 as a whole is an exercise in classy, reduced house for the summer generation. a-side -seize- crashes into force, with unapologetic bass that seems to be breaking at the seams. perfect for building or taking it down, its simple, four-four quality as dusty hats scatter and float around the top. then the keys hit, sizzling and singeing at the edges like they’ve been left on the grill too long, before the whole thing melts into the break. its hot summer garage house for late evening breakdowns. flip it over and the vinyl takes on a distinctive darker flavour. -groundhog- plays smooth, reduced house elements against a driving, deep bassline that rumbles and pushes you on. around that coils softly pulsating synths that swell in and away from you before the tooly, smooth finish reduces to a close. -special treatment- is smoother though. dusty shakers, jacking claps, druggy synths and a rolling, questioning bassline shows a deeper, darker shade of berlin house before it casually pumps its way to the close... and of course vinyl only

repress - tyrone davis was a hugely prolific blues & soul singer who was born in mississippi in 1937. he started his career as blues legend freddie king’s personal chauffeur and valet and cut a few soul 45’s that didn’t make too much noise at the time. a few years later things had turned around for young tyrone and he’d caught the ear of chicago music impresario carl davis who had just set up his own label - dakar records. having worked with legendary outfits including the chi-lites, bohannon, jackie wilson and many more, carl davis was exactly the link that tyrone needed to gain more exposure for his music. after a very successful career with dakar and almost 25 singles with the label across 7 years, tyrone signed to major columbia which is where, in 1978, this much sought after promo-only disco jammer came from. released in limited quantities and only available as a columbia white-label dj promo “get up (disco)” is a total mid-tempo burner, raw funked-out soul of the highest degree! true underground disco flavour here, one for the freaks, smooth, but heavy enough to cause some serious damage in the dance. featured here in it’s original promo 12- mix, untouched and backed with the equally dope “in the mood” from 1979. some of you will undoubtedly recognise “in the mood” as a jam that was heavily sampled by the beatnuts, faith evans, mc eiht, redman and more! this one’s a low slung, lights down lovers jam and the perfect foil to the a-side. two heavyweight jams on one 12”, remastered from the original source material and 100% legit, reissued with the full consent of sony / columbia records. essential for all disco / soul / funk fans.

1992 hardcore club classic from kev bird. originally kev bird’s second release on the basement records label made famous by in-house producer jack smooth. 3 slices of pure hardcore jungle techno lead by the seminal ‘this is a trip’ are taken from the original dat master tape and get the full sound entity remastering treatment to bring the sound right up to date with current standards.

the fourth release on manchester-focused label ad hoc brings together a range of outernational grooves from some fast-rising talents. cervo is aligned with the banana hill parties, and also previously released on black acre and lumberjacks in hell. his -hesse groove- takes a mellow, spaced out approach to dusty machine-powered house, while taurtollo gets into a bongo-heavy jam for the eclectic warm up session. chambers -the gentleman- is a loose and smooth jazzy number that revolves around a few key samples to create its seductive vibe, and then yadava finishes the ep off with the free-roaming double bass exploration of -kadampa 125.-

a heart from your shadow is the debut collaborative lp from michael beharie (new york) and teddy rankin-parker (chicago). since graduating together from oberlin college, beharie and rankin-parker each veered into markedly different avenues. beharie joined up with the ever-confounding new york ensemble zs (northern spy, the social registry). rankin-parker became an on-demand cellist for his prowess in the work of improvisation and avant-garde music, lending his talents to a wide array of collaborators such as primus, iron & wine, steve reich, and pauline oliveros. rather than jump into stream-of-concious improvisation, beharie and rankin-parker chose to focus the albums themes via intricately composed pieces. a heart from your shadow could be described as protest music, brimming with intense energy, harrowing anxiety, and steadfast optimism. produced by michael beharie, mixed carefully by jim o rourke, mastered by james plotkin and cut to lp at d&m berlin. black virgin vinyl housed in poly-lined inner sleeve in reverse board-printed double-width spine jacket with spot uv finishing. first pressing of 300 copies.

still steamin from his turner street sound collaboration, midnight tenderness serves up a dreamy first solo offering with a fire-cracker of a four-tracker for sydneys ken oath records. the opener refresco is a bleary eyed house number with gently propulsive 707 cowbells and shaker rhythms over smooth pads & an infectiously jazzy bassline. the four to the floor mould is quickly broken as the ep progresses - terme is a midtempo electro track that retains all of the dreaminess of refresco while punching in some swish drum programming. flipping the record over, bevanda is a sweaty miasma of sub-bass, fm flutes and birdlike synth leads that could soundtrack an imaginary club located in the middle of queenslands tropical rainforests. the eps closer, hydra, pushes the tempo way down and introduces some smooth guitar licks, courtesy of riffin rory as well as some lithe flute play. the end result is a sleazy new jack swing jam that works as well for warm-up as it does for cooling down. if youre tired of buying boring club 12inches, look no further! this one will be as comfortable coming through your home stereo as it will be in the club

124 recordings know how to put together a deep house compilation, and they re sounding fierce on this latest, appropriately titled levels up. the jams come heavy and funky from a range of on-point operators, leading in with tom jay s quintessential new jersey bump n grind on hanging on. david moran is a little more shadowy but no less groovesome, while nicola brusegan takes things on a sweet and smooth tip. across the whole double pack there are classically informed jams to satisfy the most weary deep house heads, but keep an ear out for the old-school flavoured heft of freak ds power of bass, which should get some seriously jacking airtime in the right kind of dance.

fausto messina is a veteran dj and producer from treviso, a small town on the plain between the gulf of venice and the alps. fausto has been releasing music for more than 10 years and pica pica is his debut e.p. on cadenza. in the track named pica pica a recurrent evocative voluminous chord is convoyed by a classy powerful kick drum and an organic symphony of fluffy percussions and metallic bonks, with a triumphant layer of dense whistles and shimmering cymbals. the extremely intense vibrant rhythms of idiophono contrast with the gentle reverberating harmonies of an ensemble of struck idiophones, angelically flowing in the background of the track. the smooth magnetic flux of planets ballet concludes the e.p. with high style. this jacky stride over a stack of steamy synthesisers and bubbly bleeps is a golden tune for a quivering late-night dance-floor.
