after the success of their first release charmin are back with another high quality wax. this offering showcases the talents of florist and close friend of the imprint tilman, all pressed up on heavyweight vinyl with a lovingly designed cover. the ep kicks off with “proof nothing” which is a statement of intent. deep, churning piano chords overlaid with delayed vocal samples all underpinned with a solid beat and deep bass. next up “raw” does exactly what it says on the tin. this is a stripped down thumper with crunchy claps and an infectious groove. “once again” has a looser, more percussive feel to it with machine gun snares rattling off overt the top of a killer chord line. bringing things to a close is “mood swings” which builds brooding atmospheres and eerie vocal snippets. all in all this ep carries on the good work of this exciting new label. charmin continues its journey to bring you uncompromising, underground house music of the highest order.

an ornate globe made with many layers of exotic woods spins on its axis. through the stained glass window diffuse light casts russet hews across the study. looking out over the walled garden to an orchard, great swollen purple and black fruits hang malevolently from mangled moss-covered trees. a gentle wind pushes the tangled branches and as they creak and moan the fruits thud lazily to the ground, gathering in mouldering clusters on the dewy grass.

the ep is called spotlight diktat in reference to the feeling some djs have when they are on tour. a kind of dj melancholia generated by airplanes, dehumanized hotels, waiting hours in boring terminals, basically traveling alone. i made these tracks out of this mood. at first they sounds like the typical groovy dance tracks, but when the melody comes out, you immediately feel there is something wrong now the track is on and you still dance (of course its made for that) but you could almost cry to it too. so this is what happens when a dj or a producer has to do their job, but they aren t really in the mood for it. when the party comes, they just forget everything and make the show happen regardless. they have to bear the spotlight diktat and keep on entertaining people regardless of what they have in mind.

a lot of water has passed under the bridge since the release of etienne jaumet’s night music, dating from october 2009. his hypnotizing music and enchanting live performances put him directly on the map. it’s just him who is in control of his ship. he moves without complexes from his saxophone to his drum machine (his beloved tr 808) while turning knobs modulating synths, and sending his voice through an echo.la visite, etienne’s brand new album, more luminous and jazzy than its predecessor, has been composed and produced within a two month period in the versatile studio. it became a piece of introspection, mentally as well as physically. in the title track, for which flop wrote the text, we hear etienne travelling through the inside of a body, fantastic voyage style.it is always surprising to see a record taking shape. etienne would arrive at the studio without any precise idea in head, approaching his work rather intuitively. he works standing up, which brings a very different energy than being seated behind a computer polishing up every detail. he is in total mastery of his set-up, ready to capture that short-lived moment of true creation. the only use a computer has for him, is to record his experiments - afterwards being mixed by jerome caron (blackjoy).in between night music and la visite, etienne has not been lazy. not only has he done numerous collaborations (amongst others with joakim, richard pinhas, francois & the atlas mountain) and picked up djing, he has also recorded a new zombie zombie album (rituels d’un nouveau monde) with cosmic neman, as well as the soundtrack loubia hamra. and he worked with artist felicie d estienne d orves on the installation satori. at this very moment, etienne and his saxophone are still part of the tour of james holden.

none of them make music for the twenty-second century. the duo is constantly deconstructing its stylistic boundaries and follows traditions only to destroy them. on stage, signup (anymouse, big zis, grenzgänger) is the master of ceremony, michal ho (tuning spork, nicetry, etc.) is the selector. vocals glide over beats generated in little boxes full of flashing lights, sometimes smooth, sometimes razor-sharp. the debut album *one of them* will be released on nicetry records and comes on double 12 inch vinyl with download code included.

this e.p. sets out to honor to spring wherever and when it may happen. it arrived early for our location the year it was first created. *furuike ya - ancient pond* was the original title. this is taken from an ancient haiku by matsuo basho. the remix for *ancient pond* was created by jason drummond (aka dj spun) from rong music nyc. this rework of the original adds a funky twist to the beats and bass line. *electric sheep* is taken from the philip k dick book including this portion its title. the theme of this track hints on the nature of our creations and the future possibilities. this particular version contains only the 303 melodies/elements of the original, which is set to be released in the next ep to follow. pressing on transparent, blue colored vinyl.

*bapteme de l air* keeps the pressure up throughout as it steadily rolls out its sharpened kick and thick, propulsive snare before reaching its rattling, mechanical apogee. *ready pour le tour* unfurls behind off-kilter clicks, tightly swung hats and sax stabs while astute dynamics build a rich and cavernous atmosphere. the disco tinged *plein les mirettes* sets a rousing warm-up tone from the off with a dense kick and clap pinning down flecks of crowd chatter and shimmering metallic signals before dana ruhs spectral revision of ready pour le tour casts a murky glow over the original, blooming until its close with thickening strings and addictive knocks and claps.
