the next release on leading french label zone is a very special one indeed from long time friend of the label and pioneering electro figure kittin, the artist formerly known as miss kittin. her standout original comes with an equally impressive remix from truncate. a long time stalwart of the electroclash scene who has put out many seminal singles, kittin has famously collaborated with the hacker and felix da housecat and mixed up new wave and techno in arresting new ways for decades. her albums have always been hailed as hugely accomplished and the prolific and innovative frenchwoman has worked with numerous top labels. now back once more in 2018 with her first solo single in some time, she is in fine form. her offering here, �eacid�, is a timeless piece of deep techno with brain melting bass and twinkling yet menacing keys. her own vocals are twisted and chopped up into wordless forms that add layers of intrigue and the whole thing is brilliantly broody. a breakdown at the mid point allows you to catch your breath as her voice refracts round the airwaves, then the icy hi hats and rumbling drums and bass land again with subtly uplifting, light emitting chords rising in the background. all in all, this is one of kittin�s most special and evocative tracks of recent times. remixing is truncate, the deep techno artist who runs a label of the same name and has released his killer wares on 50weapons. his version is more wild and flailing, with the keys becoming more manic, the drums darting about all over the place and the voice becoming more paranoid and trippy.

running a label with the ambition to push new and unique voices isn t always an easy task. while finding new artists is about as hard as finding a black t-shirt in berlin, most budding artists seem pressured to conform or mimic the already established, only to be heard. performing under the artist name bleie, oakland resident sarah bly is not one of them. originally hailing from seattle, she indeed works with the mortar of techno form, but uses different bricks altogether. it s a hard sound to articulate, at first, it s almost alienating to ears worn by years in dark clubs. its mercurial, yet still surprisingly club compatible nature makes it an aural tiger balm � it burns and soothes at once. this compositional depth is perhaps a result of bleie s background as a trained pianist and violinist, by which she transmutes the commonly associated tropes of the genre. bleie lets the elements rule over the form, giving the tracks a morphing and unpredictable feel. obviously we were instantly intrigued when stumbling across her music, and now extremely proud to present her vinyl debut certainty is only a feeling . four tracks of unique techno so brimfully suggestive that it s nearly peerless. we can t imagine this leaving anyone unaffected.

hugo gerani�s esplore ep launches on cosi cosi - a freewheeling meander through a super casual house sound. it is true �club music� built between social interactions and environments, with all the spice and intrigue of chance encounters and missed connections.
on the a, �she�s lying (roe st on the fone mix)� channels the boisterous yet untroubled late night activity that goes into its namesake. it�s a perfectly broiled and basted club tune - a real, suburban classic. elsewhere there are organic and effusive beats, blinking with sensorial curiosities and vocal suggestions as well as elements of stark, scandinavian techno.

initial listens to inre rymden (swedish for inner space) reveal it to be a curious combination of slow-motion house music and salubrious new age funk. in this case, first impressions are accurate, and they should intrigue you enough to dive deeper into the paradisiacal vistas tommy awards paint here. the opening track prometheus introduces that feeling of sundown deliquescence that very few musicians can summon, as it locks into a laid-back groove that induces utmost serenity, buoyed by sublimely mellow guitar vibes that should make fans of manuel g�ttsching s ashra and phil manzanera s solo output spring to attention. draget conjures the sort of exquisite elegance and preternatural chill last heard on roxy musics 1982 lp avalon but somehow its even more blissed out than that boudoir classic. and so it goes for most of inre rymden: among the six tracks, only rexy hints at tension, courtesy of a bass line that sounds like it should score a prisoners walk to the electric chair. but thats tempered by guitar sighs of radiant melancholy, not unlike those lofted by popol vuh s daniel fichelscher. even when inre rymden gets relatively uptempo, as on hans logan, it still glides like gilded, glazed, balearic house jams, urged on by subliminal bongos and dappled with pastel guitar shimmers far off on the horizon. music is love and love is our music, runs tommy awards slogan (a sentiment beautifully echoed by david crosby on his revered 1971 album if i could only remember my name), but one could also argue that it is medicine a balmy ear massage that spreads healing frissons to all areas of your body and mind. tommy awards continue their miraculous act as scandinavians channeling the tropics with stunning audio verisimilitude.

stepback records launch with the first new thinktank material in many years!! danger at 300 fathoms ep combines styles from many genres, electro, house, techno, reggae, electronica all neatly produced and packaged to build an excellent first release for stepback records. its no surprise as thinktank aka colvin cruickshank has a strong background in writing and producing top quality music. his band snide rhythms has a cult following and his music with thinktank reveals the breath and diversity of colvins talents as a writer and producer. a side algae rhythms kicks off the ep. its a house focused club record with a quirkyness that defines thinktanks sound. meanwhile, w sludge on b1 packs more of a punch with its heavier kick drum, snares and a much more skanky feel. we round off with l ahrax point an uncomprimising club track. its badass electro but again with a deep twist that intrigues the listener and leaves you wanting to listen again and again.

acclaimed be as one boss shlomi aber makes a big step up here by putting out a trio of his killer techno cuts on the always excellent and forward looking nonplus label run by boddika. his xy play ep continues in his no nonsense, floor facing style and impresses once more. shlomi aber is an underground titan who runs his own musical empire in the form of his be as one label. he has made it into an essential outlet for no frills house and techno and his own output has found him in fine favour with djs and dancers alike. playing all over the world and also serving as an expert at the emerging ibiza festival on the white isle, here he comes correct once more. the title ep xy play is a brain frying affair with cantering drums and stern synths bringing a dark and intone vibe to the groove. way old story is just as heads down but less ominous, here the synths are a little spooky and add intrigue to his slick rubbery drums. last but not least related sources is a hunched over house track with dub in its kick drums and a desolate industrial feel in the landscapes above. atmospheric from the first to the last moment, this is another killer ep from shlomi aber.

manchester native alex coulton has nurtured a reputation for creating sub-heavy rollers thanks to 12�s for the likes of black acre, livity sound and bloc. with gamma ray burst, the next in his series of releases on london low-end specialists tempa, coulton consolidates his sound to deliver some of the most sparse, rhythmic work of his career. with the record�s title track, coulton weaves from hard-hitting kicks, through to dizzying tribal polyrhythms the whole time maintaining a minimal, space driven atmosphere that remains omnipresent throughout the track�s most intense moments. �ground zero� revels in its spaciousness, allowing reverb to flood into the negative space between flashes of heavyweight techno percussion and saturated ripples of synth while the pulsating kicks that underpin �alpha decay� are punctuated with bleak, discordant bells, rhythmic bass hits and hypnotic filtered percussion. showing his diverse abilities, �phase two� is an exercise in measured restraint, as a cacophony of clicks and hisses come together to disorientate before forming a driving rhythm section before coulton maximises his expansive elements on the fog-tinged �ascent�. closing with the steady flowing, brighter-hued melodic work of �distant resonance�, alex coulton has created a masterful collection of experimental tech-focused electronica that bewilders, intrigues and will draw the listener in with each play.
