recorded in haiku-pauwela, maui between 3rd febraury and 14th february 2016 anthony child aka surgeon presents the second volume of recordings of buchla music easel recorded in the jungle of maui. again we find child s in a more ambient guise and setting as the calm breath of the jungle sets a real time back-drop for his electronic explorations. there is no additional layering and all environmental sounds simply occurred throughout the improvisations. the range on display veers from melodic drones to sparkling arpeggios all revolving around a thick bed of (buchla) electronic and (environmental) acoustic interplay. nine personality type map hovers on a bed of syncopated rhythms whilst the nearby sonic mist of the forest seeths in and out of the frame whilst nightfall of diamonds provides a sonic analogy for the darkness and light contradiction that occurs only in such rich natural environments. the simultaneous acts of improvising, listening and creating provide a rich setting for the curious listener. another gem in a catalogue filled with gold.

californiabased producer damon bell could not find a more suitable home for his new 12inch than croatian label burek. its his first one since blues for the libyan lp released in 2015. for deepblak, and it sounds as if the time off was well spent. two words that perfectly describe this record are rich and colourful, and the description is equally applicable to all three cuts. stand by me is a synthheavy piece built around the interplay between tracks rougher sounds and big lush pads. on the flipside, life is slightly faster and more direct, with a wonderful guitar part that circles around the main theme throughout the most of the track. similarly mannered, but slightly more intense transatlantic journey? we been here! is the last piece and features an infectious groove with lead synth piercing through layers of delicate arpeggios playing in the background. all in all, it feels good to have damon in the team. we hope youll enjoy this record

damien lynch enjoys countryside a drive in the twilight hour. this is his second offering for the esp institute. on side a, brunette opens with a straight-ahead techno thump of hi-hats and a pulsating 16th-note bassline—a subtle playing field composed solely with a rare 1970’s italian machine, the godwin drummaker 32, unearthed from the secret back room of a music shop in rural ireland where it hid among wonderful vintage russian synths and oddball electronics. this elegant track drips with warm and phasing pads, gentle staccato keys and beautifully simple arpeggios that blur every now and then—all affirming damien’s less-is-more ideology. with side b’s forced relax, damien continues to exercise his restraint, arranging his instruments in a band-like fashion, affording each player the sonic space to project their individual qualities whilst supporting an overall dialogue. there is a soft ebb and flow to every machine’s role, whether the swelling of bass or the interplay of percussive keys, but when these characters arrive in one place, the result is a tranquil euphoria. these two songs will accept you for who you truly are.

this is an album of deeply emotional music. it s not all heartfelt niceties and eye-welling moods though. rhythmic theory did after all come to light (or should that be dark) in the gloomy alleyways of uk soundsystem music begat from dubstep and all that other stuff. -creeper- is on hand to affirm that this is a record still steeped in true, stern moodiness, where a stalking sub line, some metallic percussion and an icy drone can still strike fear more than a thousand angry wobble basslines. it s worth noting how much attention has been given to shorter vignettes. as well as the aforementioned, cryptically titled -interlude-, -work of fiction- and -end (of forever)- both give insights into the places rhythmic theory cares to roam beyond the structure of a long form track. these are places where melancholic or downright ambiguous dispositions interplay with each other, from the synthetic to the earthly, the malevolent to the tender. in the end, even at its most monochromatic, nothing is black and white on rhythmic theory s debut album, and that s just fine with us.

the pacey 130bpm *ble3* leads offs, revolving around some catchy melodic interplay whereas the tempo dips on *dither24* for a sluggish exercise complete with backpedals and ricocheting stabs. *whats up* is another cut spat straight out of the machines and dipped in acid whilst *shape%07* is a battery of analogue drums that will have you in knots.

bristol music has always stood strongest as an alternative to the lowest common denominator, and so it is with brstl as the label continues to provide a platform to previously undiscovered talent in the underbelly of the citys flourishing house scene. following lauded debuts from shanti celeste and jay l, the sixth installment in the series turns to another unknown in the shape of samuel. as with other releases on brstl, 006 is made up of two distinct halves. on the a-side, >numberuma< delivers machine driven house of a rugged and charming nature. the drums switch up with playful intent but largely centre around a forward-charging 4/4 pulse with a faint hint of tropical flavour rubbed into the groove. meanwhile the limber lead keys speak of sunnier days through a cracked lens while the accompanying chord swells intone an equally uplifting and nostalgic message. while from the outset the track may be wrought from simple ingredients, the dynamic interplay between the different elements belies the producers years. on the flip, >groove therapy< opts for a more esoteric approach made up of long, dreamy lead-ins full of distant pads and delicate percussion and transitions as smooth as silk. indeed this track makes a smart foil to >numberuma<, choosing to snake its way into the subconscious through delicate melodic content and an undulating beat rather than rambunctious rhythm. slow-release filters draw that aforementioned pad in before sending it out to sea once more, and all the while the stripped back drums tick out a hypnotic chant. once again a pair of unique tracks loaded with character prove brstl to be an essential outpost for the most creative 4/4 music emanating from the west country.

since day one, radiq has been showing an affinity for the afro-centric funkiness and carefully-honed sound design of modern days minimal music. as in many of his previous tracks, all six songs of >vida noir< has this certain kind of unyielding quality - long, hypnotic grooves with muted kick drum set the stage for more emancipated experiments in texture and sound design. on >a long hot summer break<, for example, the effect is utterly obvious as kicking its ass into gear with syncopated drums and strain of warm chords before animated vocal sample slips in like fingerprint. while deeply seductive interplay of those chugging percussion gives way to delighted horn of >a-dieu<, warm chord and acoustic guitar of >calling< is perfect example for radiq’s masterful sound and texture. >machine codes modified< has rather restrained structure for him, but tightly woven drums speaks eloquently about its carefully arranged funkiness and dance floor functionality. despite their repetitiveness, its surprising how well these productions forming cohesive solidarity as an album. presumably, it owes a lot to wide tonal vocabulary which is radiqs hallmark - these tracks has something concentrated, vivid qualities. this album sits just at the edge of the dance floor, but also performs its exceptional strength on intense home listening. dusky synth and truncated surge of bass of >vida noir< constructing something dark, before closing this album with modulated afro-acoustic guitar and deep falsetto voice (by the producer himself) of >rondo<. this album offers up an engaging and comprehensive amalgamation from the inquisitive sound by the maestro

having produced some stellar jams for labels like somethink sounds, and giles petersons brownswood, eliphino aka tom wrankmore, debuts for hypercolour this autumn, opening up the labels new term with this solid two track release. i dont care opens the account, all chopped up rnb vox and rolling beats, wrapped up in a super smooth melody. already road tested by the hypercolour firm over the last few months, this deep garage vibe hits the sweet spot for sure. on the flip, understand further plunders eliphinos love of rugged garage beats and an ear for a catchy hook. a feverish interplay of vocal chops, keys and organ stabs keeps up the ante, with some decidedly trancey synth parts ramping up the 90s house influences here, and once again a cut that most definitely brings the heat to the dancefloor.

the detroit area artist/producer once called ibex is no more. due to other artists copying the ibex brand, tony ollivierra will now be recording as his real name under his new label northside district. this first release demonstrates a continued appreciation for the roots of electronic music, with several of these tracks sounding like they were buried in a time capsule back in 1987, and unearthed after marinating for twenty years or so. this should come as no surprise, since tony has been producing tracks for about that long.

the release of the fourth studio album from revered production duo booka shade last year was greeted with widespread praise from fans and press . imbued with not only an uncanny understanding of the dancefloor, but a sense of true musicianship, >more!< transcends contemporary club music, placing itself amongst a lineage of classic records. following the great success of previous single >regenerate<, the fourth and final single to be taken from the album is the scaramanga remix ep. one of the albums standout tracks, scramanga is reinvented by the duo themelves, as well an impressive host of remixers who twist and contort it into myriad shapes, each harnessing different facets of the original and shining a new light on them with their new visions. booka shade take on >scaramanga< themselves with their >manga mix<, re-appropriating the poignant and hypnotic foundations of the original to craft a nuanced and uplifting dancefloor hit. carried forward by the symbiotic interplay of the drums and bass, rhythmic chord progressions surge through the tracks core, unfurling beautifully. the vinyl package also features versions from uk-based producer reset robot and italian wunderkind dusty kid. reset robot pierces the vocal film with filtered synth stabs, giving the track an urgent propulsion which is bouyed by the swelling bass, while dusty kid strips away the layers to reveal a melancholic core, stretching it out over the ebb and flow of its nine minute duration

badmotorfinger got lost amid the blockbuster success of nevermind and ten (all were released around the same time). but the fact is that, though they re all great records, badmotorfinger is much less accessible by comparison. not that it isnt melodic, but it also sounds twisted and gnarled, full of dissonant riffing, impossible time signatures, howling textural solos, and weird, droning tonalities. its surprisingly cerebral and arty music for a band courting mainstream metal audiences, but it attacks with scientific precision. part of that is due to the presence of new bassist ben shepherd, who gives the band its thickest rhythmic foundation yet and, moreover, immediately shoulders the departed hiro yamamotos share of songwriting duties. but its apparent that the whole band has greatly expanded the scope of its ambitions. and badmotorfinger fulfills them, pulling all the different threads of the bands sound together into a mature, confident, well written record. this is heavy, challenging hard rock full of intellectual sensibility and complex band interplay.

on their introductory minus ep, click box offers a refreshing return to a bygone era of classic instrumentals, full of experimentation and passion generated by that ongoing love affair between man and machine. berlin shades starts out in a jittery minimal fashion but soon dives much deeper as the tough electro bassline expands and contracts dragging the dancer to and fro. the cascading hook and in-your-face sci-fi synth motif add a sense of tongue-in-cheek drama to a dynamic arrangement that incorporates steep inclines, sharp drops and snaking pathways. as the short staccato bass riff gains momentum and the hook comes round for the second time you just know somethings lying in wait and the boys certainly dont disappoint. lost road is anything but a blind alley, kicking off with some low-slung interplay between a two-note bassline and a whiplash snare that dishes out a serious spanking. hi-hats fizz across the audio spectrum, cleverly pitching up and down before a drunken bass sequence ushers in the main section with its sliding, twisted synth distortions primed for surprise and immediate disorientation. once all the elements are in play, the fun really starts with so many objects of interest competing for attention. the arrangement is pulled and pushed to great effect extracting maximum effect from this tough little unit. more electro flavour to the fore as the loose, broken beat intro and robot sounds of some toys make for some slick moves on the dancefloor. the retro synth riffs and dark spiralling pads conjure up images of some early 80s lab full of computer kids in white coats twiddling knobs on huge mainframe monoliths. the bouncing bass and analogue belches make this a must for all retro-tastic electro-boogie fans. the theme continues over into voxer as rising filtered bass tones playout over another trademark click box drum pattern, this time doused in heavy reverb and delay. an array of analogue bleeps, screams and laser beams keep the motor ticking over.

keeping chicagos house heritage alive since the mid-90s, justin long and mazi namvar dj and co-produce as wasted chicago youth. aside from that, justin runs dotbleep (20:20 visions house imprint), while mazi co-runs fresh meat (part of the brique rouge family). aside from that, their work has surfaced on robsoul, cajual, junior boys own, dessous and many others. chase the devil is w.c.y.s fourth ep, which finds justin and mazi fine-tuning their craft, zooming in on their citys rich musical history, and adding their own personal details to the house tradition. mars or bust kicks things off with an onslaught of booms and snaps, effortlessly juxtaposing dirty beats with precise edits. on the flip, we have the fuzzy bounce of atomic supermen, followed by love thy enemy with its robust melodic interplay coming in and out of focus. another fine addition to the tuningspork catalog, made from 100% free-range, organic, not-from-concentrate funk.

time to look busy again, as function aka dave sumner comes rampaging through the streets of downtown berlin, kicking aside lesser producers and mauling all who stand in his way. not that you would know it from the supremely controlled affair that is his edit of >variance<. moody in the extreme, this edit sees beautiful interplay between delays and reverbs but without the track sinking into the predictable mire of dub techno. space is indeed the place..

williams is back with a brand new 12inch for get physical, el baile. the lead track immediately enthrals with its galloping kick, snare and analogue bass pattern, before a typically williams-eque, fat but understated electro motif, phased chords and crisp percussion edits propel it onwards into the heart of the dancefloor. >the unbearable truth< is a thrillingly modern, moody take on the straight-up acid track. a devastatingly simple, bending acid line lies at the heart of the track, but its the way the uncompromisingly linear beat and one-note bassline play off it that really makes this track fly. house music to get lost inside. >kiss of life< sounds every bit as vital and reviving as its title implies. its beauty lies in the intricate and expressive interplay of synths: beginning with a lowslung melodic motif, a more nimble, staccato bassline emerges, before the deep, kosmische-style chords arrive ahead of a powerful breakdown into heads-down techhouse strut.

aus continue to release the best and brightest of contemporary dance music with the oehug the scary ep, a collaboration between luminaries will saul and lee jones. will saul is best known as the head of simple records, up for nomination as best british label in dj magazine this year and also sister label to the more experimental aus imprint on which this ep is released. in his career to date he has released numerous singles on simple, the critically acclaimed space between album and has recently produced an ep for the german label systematic. englishman in berlin lee jones has to date released acclaimed singles on liebe detail, aus and his own label, just rec. formerly releasing under the moniker hefner , he is also a main creative force behind playhouse my my, whose oesongs for the gentle album won plaudits worldwide in 2006. opener oehug the scary is a transcendental journey. trace echoes of melody encircle an intensifying percussive step, filtering to a chimed key reflection. tonal themes fade in, compete, distort and then depart, making way for peaks of overwhelming melody, with only the fittest surviving and elevating to the sublime. on the flip side, partial arts (the duo of ewan pearson and al usher) give their own, heavily percussive, account of proceedings. stormy fuzz and bubble bath accents introduce a funk bassline and interplay between looped guitar and tonal melody. a sci-fi synth haze halts and then dictates the progression into a saturated melodic climax.

after productions with sven väth and dj hell, anthony rother continues the tradition of mutual sound enrichment in an ingenious way, including the current publication for the sublabel datapunk limited. this time, no less than xenia beliayeva is involved, up to now the only female producer on datapunk thanks to her highly acclaimed >ultra glamour ep< of last summer. the 26-year-old muscovite by birth has regularly worked as a disk jockey already since 1996 and is considered as one of the hottest german dj insider tips since her support gig for kraftwerk at the zkm opening in karlsruhe. a part from brilliant breaks, xenias remix of rothers retreaded super space model hit >dont worry< is mainly characterised by the interplay of beliayevas and rothers voices, >love s gonna change your life for good<, who would have ever dared to doubt about that. with the flipside, rother once again did a solo revision of >roses<, available up to now exclusively on the cd version of the album >super space model<, and created a highly dynamic synthesis of classical datapunk sound and sporadically interspersed reminiscences of the romantic synthpop of the past century

whilst barlande may be difficlut to classify in genre it has been described as having its roots in flamenco and some ramifications of contemporary classical music. but any attempt to pigeon-hole this album should be ignored beyond deciding what shelf or floor to place it on in a record store. barlande is about creativity and discovery and its story is both fasciniating and inspiring a father, pedro soler, and his son, gaspar claus have created something entirely unique. the opening track insomnio mineral is a gentle begining with sparsely plucked cello before being joined by a gently sweeping flamenco guitar. what takes place from there on in is difficult to describe in words. the language between the cello and guitar become unlike anything i have heard before. the cello comes alive, a voice at times, leaping and striding in near freeform before coming back to join in mutual step and melodic interplay with guitar.
