grab-bag 12” ep of electro, idm, breaks and house from montreal via ottawa producer riohv (aka braden thompson), which follows up the similarly map-jumping 1080-released “moondance” cassette from back in 2014. finding more confidence and proficiency in his own abilities as a producer, thompson was able to have a lot more fun and subsequently revise and update his sound to reflect his own tastes in records. the ep was made in one burst in montreal over the winter and spring. on “green room, it comes down to creating what he wants to hear—atmosphere through dreamy or moody pads, layered percussive elements, to pay tribute to the euphoria of early rave music.

copenhagen-based imprint ectotherm returns with “ingen tak til systemet” from local gem, rune bagge. the ep features four diverse cuts ranging from drum’n’bass-leaning idm to straight, floor-filling techno. as a dj, bagge has been a part of the dk scene for years, providing dancefloors with heavy and crunched up percussive sounds, which he continues with this ep as his debut solo production effort.

at 21 years old, mathis ruffing has already managed to craft a signature sound, elegant and mature with a focus on melody and texture. rewardingly diverse, the ep touches on several genres and influences, ranging from cosmic to earthy dancefloor cuts, acid, grime, proper electro, idm and ambient. the common thread on this record is the search for balance between heartfelt melodies on one hand and on the other a form of immediacy, raw and almost industrial. ruffing has no trouble finding this balance and adding five terrific tracks to the banlieue catalogue.

rustling pillows, irate flamingos, drums thumped feverishly in basements. tweaked cassettes, noisy buses, restless hands tapping dashboard rhythms in thick dusk traffic. found sound, musique concre&#768,,te, stuttering drum loops forged in twilight boredom — hyperedited into ruminative dance collages. pillow by mischa lively (ne&#769,,e barton, blake): 4 songs, 25 minutes, a hybrid of exertion and uplift. pillow marks both the nashville native’s debut for racecar and the denouement of an evolution. once rigidly stuck to notions of how rhythm should be utilized — barton is a trained percussionist — the producer eventually realized the potential in limiting himself to a minimalist diet of new and archived drum loops from which to build songs. studying myriad treatment techniques, barton then executed a vision unmoored to binary ideas about “live” versus “electronic,” blurring lines as he composed with an ear for idm, dub, techno, and ambient music. hence pillow: a vast assemblage of rhythm and sound performed to mirror the spirit of dance records. indeed, the 12” is as ripe for warehouse parties as meditative nights alone, headphones affixed, candles lit, marveling at the mysteries humans conjure with physical limbs. “rhythm is instinctual to me,” barton remarks when asked about his preference for recording analogue patterns versus beats sourced from 1s and 0s. “and i dislike sitting nearly as much as working from computers.” movement, then, is a virtue to barton, and in mischa lively he’s found a taut, elegant, propulsive vehicle in which to explore it.

almost a year after his last outing, london-based vester koza is making a welcome return to the fray with a new ep entitled otr. featuring four atmospheric cuts, for the first time it finds him step away from his own maslo label to join houndstooth. fusing elements of dub, ambient and idm into moody sound worlds with you right at the centre, he has a subtle but seductive touch that has always marked him out. an on-going interest in security, technology and privacy characterizes his work, as does a passion for the vintage and modern gear he uses when producing. all of that is evident here in his most cerebral and conceptual release yet.

we are very proud to announce that we have signed arovane aka uwe zahn for echocord. uwe is in our world a legend within the electronic music scene. he started to do releases on the old berlin labels din and city-centre-offices. he is known for being one of the best producers ever within the idm & electronica scene. back in the 90’s he listened to the music of basic channel, maurizio and fluxion a lot. this sound is timeless. in the summer of 2015 he started to record a couple of dub sounds and beats beside his collaboration work and the production of his new album. he talked to fluxion and told him about the growing project. he liked the tracks very much and connected it with echocord and the modul ep was born.

the r zone series excels at raw, inventive, off kilter club music from a range of mysterious artists. that fine tradition continues once more here with another four cuts of inventive music that takes cues from techno, idm, acid and house. lumidei is all wonky drums and out of time hits and is a brilliantly weird cut full of spacious atmospherics. mynheer is built on a bed of broken beats, knocking hits and metallic textures that all tumble and fall around loosely and invitingly.

by now, we ve come accustomed to tabernacle records exploring the outer reaches of detroit-influenced techno, electro and ambient. even so, their latest outing from regular contributor jeremiah r is something special. beginning with the floatation tank-in-space ambience of chorus, calisto sees the producer laying down a whopping eight cuts that variously touch in drexciyan electro, artificial intelligence-era idm, and hard-to-define hybrids that confirm the intergalactic potential of electronic music. interestingly, the music is roughly equally split between horizontally inclined, beat-less explorations, surging dancefloor workouts, and the kind of mid 90s home listening fodder that sits somewhere in between.

once again the dutchman from the north boris bunnik (who actually resides in rotterdam now, but that aside) is showcasing his magic fingers, this time on shipwrec s deep techno offshoot deep sound channel. hinterland is a topnotch ice-cold but heartwarming submarine electro/techno album with distant hints of idm, in other words the perfect soundtrack for the long midwinter nights to come.

long-serving brit in san diego james clements dons his familiar asc guise once more, for a typically atmospheric trip into deep, ambient-influenced abstract techno for canada s silent season imprint. as usual, there s much to admire, from the sparse percussion, glacial electronics and icy melodies of deep freeze, to the minimalist, modular sounding hum of closer raging seas. arguably best of all, though, is immersion, which sees clements expertly combine early 90s style dreamy ambient chords, textures and melodies think pete namlook or early irresistible force with scraped metal textures and impeccable idm beats

devoted to the art of movement is the first record from nss (no spiritual surrender) a duo formed by j.c. (ahd co-owner together with damian schwartz) and kastil this e.p. centers it s attention towards electro, but continue ahds heritage of giving a twist to those 90s sounds that influenced us so much, from early idm to detroit, all is present here. the opening track is the one that gives the ep it s name, an acid stomper build around an electro beat that builds up and down fiercely. the track maintains its tension throughout its whole length by building strings and arpeggios over its acid sequence, never transferring its beat to a straight kick, capturing the attention since its first second. proposed playground is build around a more steady electro beat, strings and sounds merge themselves around the beat to create a beautifully hypnotic piece where where some background melodies tickle our ears bringing memories from idm golden years. zero one is closing track, without leaving the electro rhythms the defined the whole ep the track is build around a phrenetic synth sequence that sets the path for the whole length, rhythms are rough and strong and its syncopated hitting adds emphasis on that frenzy atmosphere since its first second till the last.

those with a passion for heavyweight electro and drexciyan sounds have long held french producer franck kartell in high regard. he s been working away on the fringes delivering high-grade material for a decade, and finally got round to dropping his debut album, afterlife, last year. here he delivers a swift follow-up, effortlessly flitting between icy ambience, vector lovers style electro-idm, creepier compositions, and the kind of oddly symphonic, soundtrack-inspired fare that exists to stir the emotions. its a far more fragile sounding set than some might expect, but no worse for it. while theres little dancefloor material on show, kartell s downtempo fare is a cut above most of his contemporaries.
