frío y vacío is a band based in méxico city, formed in 2015 by the prolific angel kauff (vocals, guitar, synths, drum machine) and jon gil (bass, drum machine). angel also created his more synth orientated stockhaussen and isotropía projects, jon is also half of the identik fact project, the other half being his twin brother jeremy key who in turn is the guest vocalist in frío y vacío s song autodestrucción . what frío y vacío do is a reflection of their name, meaning cold and void . they have been influenced by different music genres, from post-punk and goth rock to cold wave and synth punk, all with a classic 80s sound. the lyrics are a consequence of kauff s personal experiences and feelings. the music, a maelstrom of fast rhythms, sharp guitars, thumping baselines, everything to create an oppressive atmosphere, charged with a high load of electrostatic power that is released in almost every song. pure, dark energy. note: limited to 265 hand numbered copies - comes with download code and lyrics insert

heady heady work from the legendary gal costa – caught here right at her early best, smack dab in the middle of the tropicalia years! the album’s one of gal’s legendary collaborations with arranger rogerio duprat – and it’s very much in the spirit of her other incredible session from 1969, but also features some even heavier and more tripped out guitar – in a way that really pushes the psychedelic aspect of the work! the sound here is really amazing – very fuzzy and freaky at times, in ways that make the album one of the most rocking sets of the entire tropicalia scene, but in ways that still hang onto the quirky experimental qualities of work by os mutantes or caetano veloso. gal’s vocals really rip out amazingly at times – light years away from the sweet sound of the late 70s, and more in the frenetic, urgent style you’d expect from the politically-charged scene that spawned the set. caetano veloso and gilberto gil join gal on a great version of -pais tropical-, jards macale guest stars on the classic -empty boat- – and other tracks include -tuareg-, -meu nome e gal-, -pulsars e quasars-, and -cultura e civilizaco-. essential!

pretty great sounds from the legendary antonio carlos jobim – an album cut a bit later than his bossa years, but with a darkly sophisticated sound that’s pretty darn compelling! the album features larger orchestrations by claus ogerman, and in a way, it’s similar to the jobim album on decca from 1973 (aka maita pere) – in that it’s got all the simple elements of jobim’s earlier bossa scoring, flushed out into moodier orchestral forms that we’d rank right up there with the modernist work of gil evans or duke ellington. a few cuts have a breezier sparer sound, and you’ll hear english versions of some older bossa tunes. titles include -dreamer-, -canta mais-, -olha maria-, -wave-, -two kites-, -this happy madness-, -song of the sabia-, -estrada do sol-, -voce vai ver-, -off key-, and -triste-.

an incredible album from lo borges one of the best singer/songwriters on the brazilian scene of the 70s! borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the club da esquina album by milton nascimento and his work as part of miltons corner club really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. yet borges is almost an equally great talent on his own with a soaring, soulful approach that’s every bit as great as the best nascimento material from the period and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! the sound here is completely sublime right from the start music that moves us, even if we can t understand the language of the lyrics like some of the best work by caetano veloso and gilberto gil. there’s maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the milton nascimento work of the period but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include beto guedes, nelson angelo, toninho horta, and tenorio jr. the songwriting is amazing and titles include cancao postal, voce fica melhor assim, nao foi nada, calibre, faca seu jogo, toda essa agua,pensa voce, como o machando, and aos baroes.

these songs represent but a small sampling of the fruits of a flowering in brazilian creativity. the innovations in structure, lyrics and arrangements, combined with a very restrained but heartfelt intensity, are unique to brazilian pop music… and in their own way, are as radical, seductive and beautiful as the best english language pop.

ursa’s reef is a late 80’s traveller and surfer wandering endlessly in the secluded raves of goa, searching for his own soul while dancing in abandon to the proto-trance journeys of goa gil. brought up in sintra, portugal, by a family of uptight catholic hypocrites, ur goes rogue in his early 20’s, seduced by the esoteric teachings of levi, pessoa, crowley and israel regardie while keeping an unhealthy obsession with roxy music. he is also a fictional, made up persona - a musical heteronym - of lisbon-based dj and producer marco rodrigues, mostly known for his work under the name photonz. together with his friend jose acid - a musical heteronym of joao ervedosa aka shcuro - he makes one last trip to goa that could prove fatal.

the two french friends, siler & dima , have collaborated on phonogramme imprint to present you their 2nd release « friends chip » ep. a first release almost 2 years ago on their own label, popcorn records, siler & dima , took a little break from producing. when the two of them finally got back in the studio, they were unsure exactly what would result, but both wanted a return to their background and the music they like to work together. a music based on sampling, with a melting pot of jazzy & funk soul influences, from moodymann to gil scott heron or donny hataway. the result is here, with 3 groovy tunes, with a strong jazz touch, influenced downbeat of the 90’s. this friends chip release is also the fruit of several collaborations. in « the hunters » you can easily recognize the unique and sexy voice of chez damier, a key influence of the french duo. in “memoory” ,the young & talented paul cut brought his keyboard science , and le loup, one of the main highlight of the french scene, appears on the last track, « willie hutch”. to bring his music knowledge and groove to the original. the result is a beautiful ep truly “friendship”

reiner witzel is a german jazz musician born in mannheim. he is said to be one of the best jazz-sax-players nowadays and won several awards. reiner witzel worked with well-respected artists amongst others defunkt @ new yorker knitting factory, with fela kuti @ shrine in lagos, in jazz clubs of tokyo and stadiums in dubai. moreover he played with the bundesjazzorchester, philipp van endert (urban lyrical), the gil evans orchestra, marla glen, kristi stassinopoulou, the hr-bigband and fury in the slaughterhouse. besides his work as a musician he is also busy as a photographer and portrayed lionel richie or roger cicero, a. o..

a negative hallucination is an idea that was first put forward by sigmund freud in 1890. he used the term to describe how a hypnotised person could be led to be unable to see a person or thing that was right in front of them once out of the hypnotised state, creating a gap in their reality. sadly, this gap in reality seems endemic in the minds of many in the world, whether from lack of access to facts or from wilful ignorance. the result is the same regardless: a world where many oppressed peoples reality is edited out of the conversation. noleian reusse (half of africans with mainframes) and thomas cox (one third of pittsburgh track authority) got together in the studio in pittsburgh during a week of extreme social unrest in the usa in late 2015, resulting in these recordings. the tracks are crafted with a stripped back electronic funk and a stark, relentless feel that reflects the energy in the air at the time. as long time fans of politically and socially charged music like public enemy, underground resistance, nwa, dopplereffekt, and gil scott-heron, noleian and thomas have taken these influences and mixed them with their own styles to come up with a modern dancefloor version of those ideals. lead track solidarity fills the whole a side with its optimism. soulful melodies and strings conquer the driving rhythms, bringing a sense that through sticking together, a better future is possible. the b side s perspective is darker. police state is a crazy raved out banger that combines gritty acid and harsh tones that channel the day-to-day existence for far too many urban people. the third and final cut, surveillance, is a paranoid, spacey techno track that would be ideal as a soundtrack for closed-circuit television video reels. this snapshot of urban life is tied together through artwork by andrew burger, whose mix of throwback style and current ideas nails the dystopian existence that is now reality as predicted so long ago by orwell, huxley, lucas, and many more.
