over the last year, daniel martin-mccormick has been exploring new terrain as relaxer, releasing a series of eps on the project s eponymous label. the third installment follows the paranoid whispers and mossy drip of the first two, yet is the most direct so far. “forming” and “forming (version)” offer distinct takes on a simple rhythmic motif, the first reaching for the heavens, and the b2 “version” sinking into hell. both develop gradually, drawing in the dance floor before unleashing, the a-side’s yearning strings and thunderclaps overflow with emotion, while “version” is a vortex of ever-escalating, dark intensity. in between is “monday,” a teeming environment with a deep bass throb, pounding drums, and shimmering percolating melodies.

californiabased producer damon bell could not find a more suitable home for his new 12inch than croatian label burek. its his first one since blues for the libyan lp released in 2015. for deepblak, and it sounds as if the time off was well spent. two words that perfectly describe this record are rich and colourful, and the description is equally applicable to all three cuts. stand by me is a synthheavy piece built around the interplay between tracks rougher sounds and big lush pads. on the flipside, life is slightly faster and more direct, with a wonderful guitar part that circles around the main theme throughout the most of the track. similarly mannered, but slightly more intense transatlantic journey? we been here! is the last piece and features an infectious groove with lead synth piercing through layers of delicate arpeggios playing in the background. all in all, it feels good to have damon in the team. we hope youll enjoy this record

australian label nightime drama, run by peter fincher (aka vibrio) and shaun franklin (aka trebek) now serves up its second standout release of 2016. this four track affair comes hot on the heels of the last by yoshihiro arikawa, and is a second release on the label by aussie live act, dj and producer trinity, with steven tang and italian based andee on the remix. trinity has also released on ooc, coincidence and android muziq and regularly performs all round europe. his sound deep and cosmic, heady and hypnotic, as the fresh tracks here prove. cascade drive is seven minutes of direct and elastic house with spacey pads and driving drums carrying you through the cosmos. from the earthmothern label and one half of rk s, andee strips it back to a slick rubber kick drum then layers in a forceful acid line and icy hi hats to really get you under its spell. the longform groove is physical and cerebral in equal measure. the next original is expansion, and again finds trinity serving up a hi tech and soul infused deep techno sound that is lithe and liquid, smeared with great pads and truly timeless. emphasis boss steven tang is the perfect man to remix given his style, and his version flips the cut into a more heavyweight and banging techno effort, but one that is just as littered with sci fi sounds, spaceship trails and intergalactic energies.

fideles is the joint moniker of italian duo daniele aprile and mario roberti, who have carved out a niche for their distinctive brand of deep, techy house on noted labels such as defected, be as one, and marco resmann’s upon you, among others. here on their first outing for poker flat recordings, the duo cook up four courses of lean, focussed tech-house for steve bug’s seminal imprint. ‘detuned’ starts the journey - an edgy, tense groove exhibiting the boy’s masterful sound design and use of space to create a thick, intoxicated atmosphere. ‘i’m rude’ is more direct - a thumping bass drum introduces a low slung bass groove, slowly evolving and mutating into a true party-starter. ‘worthy’ uses similar building blocks but delivers a different vibe altogether, revelling in a minimalist production aesthetic and cheeky bass riff. ‘ran baran’, the title track, is another lesson in great production - each element perfectly balanced to create an atmosphere of controlled mayhem - which is exactly the response this entire ep aims to instigate on dancefloors.

the second of this year’s smd singles on their own delicacies label is features another two original tracks, leading with the hypnotic, late night techno loping of “remember in reverse”, drenched in glistening synths. the second track, “soft attack” takes a much more direct approach, with a brash battering of crash cymbals on every 4th bar marking time as a sinuous synth melody curls around the rhythmatic trunk. “soft attack (drum version)” pares it down even further, excising the melody for a minimal dj tool. also included here is a remix of ‘remember in reverse” from 90s mid west techno legend, dj hyperactive, who we’re super excited to have on this release. he extensive 11 minute rework transforms the track, sprinkling it with subtle doses of acid. after a short hiatus following their modular-only, desert recorded last album “whorl”, during which smd s james ford found himself on production duties for everyone and their dog, smd are back with bunch of techno cuts on their own delicacies label. over a couple of months in jas shaw s newly re-located synth-dense studio in leafy kent, which saw smd once again experiment with live jams as the basis for their production, they’ve pulled together a selection of eight tracks for release as a series of four singles over the coming months. smd fans will note that the earlier naming convention of delicacies has fallen by the wayside – for the simple reason that we’ve pretty much run out of weird and wonderful food stuffs to steal names from. instead, a semi-random automated process has been used to create the track names.

dirt fishing is the follow-up to ‘slag heap’ nrv001 (a split 12” made up of sounds recorded in a slate mine). this time it comprises of recorded sounds encountered during a day of metal detecting on walthamstow marshes. the recordings include the direct output from the proximity sensor on the metal detector, ambient eld recordings from the environment, conversations with friend and fellow dirt sher, glen, and separate sounds recorded by knocking, tapping and rubbing the found items.

tim green is back with another brace of high impact club tunes of the sort that have made him one of the most in demand producers of the day. whether serving up rolling techno treats for cocoon, essential mixes for the body language series on get physical or laying down compelling club sets in the dj booth, brit tim green is unstoppable right now. here he steps up to the get weird imprint with two more tantalising cuts that show just how broad and brilliant an artist he is. stirring opener ‘for a memory’ is eleven minutes of wordless and intoxicating female vocals, slick rubbery drums and plunging bass. the overall effect is hypnotic, rolling and perfectly groovy, and it will no doubt have whole dancefloors locked under its spell. some little melodic explosions, sweeping filters and luscious pads all help add a real air of grace to proceedings that mark it out as another classic from green. ‘for a distant memory’ is a subtle but noteworthy reworking of the same cut. in this one, the drums are less direct and more stripped back, there is a focus on the angelic, glowing pads and on spine tingling slices of synth that are reflective and emotive as they drop in and out. it is a perfectly trance inducing, heart warming cut that the likes of lee burridge at his all day i dream parties, or various djs playing on a sun kissed terrace around the globe, will all lap right up. these are two more essential tracks from the ever on point tim green.

jäfar make a rapid return to the label and are back to grace the a side of fragil 019, while one half of the duo (elliot sindall) also pairs up with constantin nakov as seura on the flip. black mamba recalls certain aspects of jäfar s previous work on the label: the broken drum line, the subtle vocal samples and the global hypnotic aspect of the music. yet it is also radically different from marzsia. black mamba is a subtle but direct club track, aiming to get the dancers down through its heavy groove. the kick drum and low toms are strongly suggesting leg movement, joining forces with the snares and hats which call upon some serious head nodding.on the b side, white chapel is another broken beat club piece, but this time feels crafted for the afterhours. the groove is lighter and the heady feel is strong, closing the dancer s eyes and inviting them to drift through the music. once again, fragil comes up with original, well produced and highly danceable content, highlighting unsung talents for every versatile dj out there.

the latest release from the swiss duo larytta, entitled jura libre, is a chunky, massive, intelligent, colorful (in that full on tropical way) four-song collection of club bangers. to be exact the full set actually consists of two original songs with an in-house larytta remix a piece. the originals lean on pronounced inflections of playful, tricky, afro-tropical rhythms, while the reworks go for a more direct four-to-the-floor approach straight for the jugular. apart from the vibrant, tight production what unifies all of these tracks is a head nod towards that nineties club sound, especially that golden age acid rave material. this is music made not only by great producers, but heads that really know and love clubbing culture and history and know how to tastefully reference the past. the ep closes with bota mao pra encima which features brazilian emcee junior, and thats the point at which you start to question if this ep was truly cut in switzerland.
