mar & sol first release is aleluia lp from the cabo verde singer pedrinho. at the time, late 70 s, this lp was one of the biggest successes from cabo verde music. singer pedrinho moved to lisbon when he was 18 years old, and recorded this album, the first one of his career. aleluia was produced in the same street where mar & sol is based nowadays, in rua de s.bento, lisbon, portugal. this street was also where pedrinho come to live when he arrived in portugal, like the majority of the musicians and emigrants from the old african portuguese colonies move at that time, to try a new luck. a big community grew here and these artists got the opportunity to record their own traditional music by the hands of local labels. now is the time for mar & sol to give a new life to all this music, this is the first of many reissues that are coming to start the series of the label.

* this ep was first released in 2006 and is the first stonedwave release. it is a white seven inch, containing of two tracks by robert chudoba aka kungfoo. a. undead and real (kungfoo s ectoplasma remix) is the result of a remix context which was organized at the erutufon website using a samplepack by chip tronic. the theme is undead and real and describes the atmosphere in a hp lovecraft short novel where an undead person is roaming around at night.. kungfoo processes the samples of the track which was created by chip tronic with own built reaktor ensembles and one of the first ableton live versions. the result is a funky wonky electro tune with a lots of bleeps, modulations and which is still a lot of fun to listen to. timeless funk! b. rock me is a wonderful science fiction like glitch techno track with very elaborated breaks and an awesome groove. like a whirl of satin.

italian producer simone fedi, hailing from tuscany, takes things to a whole new level on this third release on eskimo recordings. >bitter devotion< is a vocal pop gem with a balearic tinge, but its bittersweet vocals and the addictive melody will haunt you. for this tune fedi, a multi-instrumentalist with a knack for pop music and a soft spot for vintage gear, joined forces with a mysterious singer named lola rent, and this turns out to be a winning team.

next up on tirk we have a brand new act, named free school. hailing from birmingham, shoegaze duo andy and steve bring the sunny balearic sounds of summer and the icy kosmiche sounds of winter all in one sweeping hit. free school are maximalist and minimalist all at once.
the band like to compare themselves to caribou, orbital, hot chip, fourtet, and pet shop boys, all pretty good touchstones in our eyes, however it was the sheer gloriousness of their music that had us hooked.
their debut ep features the uplifting and euphoric >ranting and raving< and the 9 minute sound-movie >lemon<. remixes come from richard norris and his time and space machine project (we are going to have to put this guy on the payroll soon) and russian ice cool customer sportloto. free school also appear live (in sheep masks no less) so watch out for them at a venue near you. their debut album is in the pipeline and already sounding good.

tonbaumeister’s love for electronic music roots deep in the late eighties when he got his first computer, a commodore c-64, and when he instantly fell for the distinctive sounds of its sid chip. always driven by this passion he since then devoted himself to producing electronic music on various computing platforms and with multiple different programs to discover and soon constantly reinvent his own style. growing up in hessen, in the very heart of germany, he was deeply influenced by the endlessly evolving styles of house music and techno, which shaped the face of the vibrant club culture in cities like frankfurt and kassel. although tonbaumeister’s style might prematurely be declared as house music, the diversity of his productions makes it almost impossible to put them in a box and label them. his energetic tracks range from straight house to tech house to almost dark technoid characteristics, but suddenly one finds oneself surpr ised by the aforementioned sounds of late eighties computer games embedded in a psychedelic landscape with rough sawtoothy baselines. as hard as it is to pin down his production style, it is even harder to label his dj sets, which, as well as his productions, constantly evolve and morph while mirroring all of tonbaumeister’s influences. since 1999 he developed a passion for djing and he has had the chance to transport his enthusiasm into a number of clubs, infecting many clubbers with his verve. at the moment he is about to launch his own label subclinical

like his dj status, as a producer, jesse rose is a guarantee. world-renowned for the sound he created with long term mentor and dubsided label boss dave switch taylor, jesse is now the guy you turn to when you want a dancefloor remix, lending his services to the likes of hot chip, simian mobile disco, underworld to name but a few. after the phenomenal success of jesse’s mighty debut album, >what do you do if you dont< comes the third single from the album – >well now<. if you havent already heard the hooky >well now< in the clubs or on the airwaves, where have you been? the original mix is exactly what you would expect of jesse with its cheeky vocal and typical comedy factor make this mix so catchy its hard not to recognise it after the first play. flipping over savage skulls add their remix treatment to the track. these talented swedish boys who already have a dubsided original release under their belt and a killer recent remix for major lazer, give >well now< their bass and bumps whilst putting a kaleidoscope of funk back into electro.

>we are electric< is the second single to be taken from the recently released >entertainment< album by fischerspooner. a soaring slice of scintillating electro with super fried guitars and anthemic lyrics that put me in mind of blade runner. possibly the standout track on an album full of super strong tunes, >we are electric< comes with 3 amazing remixes which couldnt be more different from each other. the lush radio friendly nu disco mix by kitsune favourites classixx reaveals the pop heart of the song and makes us think of the pet shop boys. next up is an absolutely storming mix by cursor miner, this is so hot its likely to burn the hair off your head if heard at full volume. its extreme treated vocals recall moments from the first fs album but the beats are pure miner madness. lastly but by no means least we have hot chip at their most club friendly, comparatively subtle compared to the previous mix, its deceptive simplicity reveals an insidious dancefloor killer when played in the right context. so there we have it then a knockout single from fischerspooner on the back of a great album that has received some fine press, a selection of which is printed below.

its ireland hottest techno label again and the goodies they ve got prime to spurt out of the old sac are pretty tumultuous. take this outing from heretics of disko, which is label boss desy palmers floating project which here sees him working with robbie dunne aka spectrum is green on a track which first appeared as part of the hold it down magazine compilation a couple of years ago. the two new mixes come courtesy of finlands lackluster bouncing around like richochet rabbit in a disused robot dump and japans yukio taking more of an electro route with percolating percussion to arrive at some engaging oddball alien funk. a diff kind of brotha is concrete soul collectives kenny black remixed by japans katsuhiko putting the female voice through a blender studded with clicks and efx plus leeds nasty bobby, who stretches the vocals savagely over chattering groove reminiscent of psychotic robo chipmunks confronted with david camerons knackers. maximum quality again.

the first new music from canadian electronic pop duo junior boys since their much-acclaimed >last exit< long player. >suggest talk talk produced by timbaland… junior boys spectral vision of electronic pop is an understated, unpredictable delight ****< said the guardian of >last exit<. without a domestic release this album in 2004 crept into most journalists end of year polls. this is the first junior boys release to be released on domino worldwide and initial reactions have been fantastic. it seems that word of mouth has been spreading like wildfire on this band. >in the morning< and >the equalizer< are both taken from the forthcoming album >so this is goodbye<. they are backed with remixes for the coolest dancefloors from nyc s morgan geist and glasgow s alex smoke. the band play their uk debut at london s luminaire on august 10th and then return as very special guests of hot chip in the autumn for a full uk tour.
