new zealand based crate digger frank booker invites good friend julien dyne to drop the second release on his new imprint down in the basement. jd picks up where the man called booker left off on vol 1 and gets straight up to speed cutting up rare boogie, disco and afro jams and employing his trademark raw cuts in an old school style, while lacing oodles of fx n stuff into the mix. the overall sound is reminiscent of the early idjut boys material, which is so close to mr booker s heart.

kyle geiger returns on his home label with a set of tracks designed to recapture the basic function of techno. it s music to sweat to at a party. additionally, this package aims to capture a sense of timelessness through melody interwoven with a pumping breed of techno rhythms. the title track, homecoming, starts with a bottom-heavy percussive workout, then presses forward with an array of slowly filtering brighter synth stabs. the breakdown sees an arpeggiated synth slowly overtake the rhythm of the track just long enough to build tension and bring things back to full speed. the verge is a very stripped back, drum track style cruiser, which builds tension with a rising distorted pulse sound filtering in and out. just as it seems that the back half of the track will carry on as planned, a running melody comes in and changes the direction of the entire track. the verge (beat tool) is identical to the original, but build for those a little shy about slightly more upfront melodies.

groove line records are proud to add to their 2015 releases of half-speed mastered re-issue singles with both the extended special disco version and instrumental version of earth wind & fire s 1976 funk bomb getaway gracing each side of a 180g 12” virgin vinyl disc. looking to gain on his groups critical and commercial success from the early 1970s ew&f s main man maurice white brought in the legendary charles stepney, who had tutored him at chicago s chess records in the 1960s, as the co-producer and arranger on their incredible 1976 album spirit, which opened up with the formidable funk track getaway. co-written by guitarist, vocalist and songwriter bernard “beloyd” taylor (s.o.u.l.) and songwriter peter corbelenky around the theme of escapism and self-fulfilment, the primal urgency of getaway was the ideal composition for white to record with ew&f. white felt the song s energy and positive, uplifting lyrics matched the attitude and ethos of his group perfectly. as a result ew&f created a funk gem both musically and lyrically perfect for the dance floor.

latest wicked bass instalment comes from lost 1990s tapes of an underground estonian production group, hupnosaurus. side a opens with muru, a simple ballad with its stripped kicks and funky string bass that gradually reach a lo-fi acidic house condition with psychedelic swirls appearing every now and then. bookworms provides a remix treatment with thick, multi-layered overdriven & looped madness that strips the original to a simple bassline and occasional industrial stabs. on side b, always in n out starts out as unorthodox blend of a classic techno kick and speed garage percussion, but after a long building spacey pad breaks into a classic filtered house tune with transposed chords and cut-up vocals that runs until the end of the track. the last title track demonstrates heavy stomping kicks, swinging hats, familiar psychedelic whirls and a trippy, crushed vocal sample appearing out of nowhere questioning where am i?

the first release back in 1997 on 4 track records was by dj hyperactive titled p.51 and here were are nearly 20 years later and we’re going to see the next release again by hyperactive on vinyl again titled “black on black” ep. this ep will be three tracks, 2 which are acid tracks and one long experimental spaced out track.

dj goethe big classic here, at least realesed on vinyl. a superb 140 bpm acid techno tune with everything needed in a good tune. on the b-side stands a very ptit gris, playable any speed and totally minimal and easy. a superb dj tool bringing a fat kick like never before and thats the point.

the last few years have seen chicago footwork rise to international success, and traxmans debut album - *the mind of traxman* on planet mu - played no small part in that. it showcased cornelius fergusons brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of footworks house-derived beat science. the selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on traxman s abilities. instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.
