dilla would surely be proud! and so would probably theo and moody too. theres a new cat from michigan down with the raw fusion roster. his name is kiyoshi shelton and will, with a 150% probability, hit both the hip hop and soulful house scene large! his 3 track debut ep on raw fusion starts off with a real smooth hustlin deep house tune with parallels drawn to the eminent new york producer, dj spinna or even west londons own soulful heroes restless soul. the flipside takes us down memory lane with some real heavy detroit hip hop bangers, both of them with a nice soulful touch. their heavy and the tough and wicked lyrics are least as sharp.

killer groove 4 track ep , with strong tribal dub-tech flavours

roughly translated, hasta el fin means >the very last number of the night<, appropriate when you consider this is gigolos final release of 2009. the a&r process at gigolo is a constant and very simple formula! if hell likes it, plays it and gets a good reaction from the crowd then it needs to come out on his record label! no other record fits the criteria more the >hasta el fin<. this is a record that featured heavily in hells festivals and club sets and was played at the end of every after-hour he found himself. but its beginning is a little less finite.
the genesis came late last year when oliver ton invited various musicians for a jamming session. in the spirit of some masterful moments in music oliver ton and production partner ronald christoph captured something unique sounding with a dance record built largely around a vocal, guitar and piano performance. it was immediately signed to berlin based white records and assigned the fitting cat. no. of white999!!!
hell, an early supporter of both the record and label was smitten, personally requesting the license for gigolo. once this was granted he approached tony lionni for a remix. for many djs, including hell, tony lionnis >found a place< is without doubt one of the biggest records of 2009. so combining the talents of these two artists would appear to be a no brainer, and the results speak volumes. taking the vocal hook, layering it over a tough piano stab and italo style disco rhythm is the order of the day. as we approach the end of another decade for gigolo and the first of new millennium we are proud to present our last number of the 2009!

it was only a short time ago when these 2 young up and comers made their respective debuts on our label and in the few months between then and now, they have gone on to skyrocket up through the ranks, conquering dancefloors, charts and dj crates-while becoming household names synonymous with quality and consistency.
florian kruse and nils nürnberg need very little introduction these days but for those that have been asleep or living under a rock, a good start would be to check their recent output on fine labels such as nrk, om, moodmusic, dessous and our very own dieb, to name a very select few. their first combined effort on the label has resulted in the >suerte ep<, a tight collection of deep as hell, tech infused house numbers heavily characterized by their attention to groove and addictive, seductive chord progressions that have become a hallmark of their production prowess.
to add some spice to an already sterling and stylized package, we have enlisted our good friend (and also mood music alumnus) alexander maier, to remix the titular >suerte< where he adds his considerable musical vocabulary to the proceedings, peppering a very tasty arrangement with piano chord stabs and throbbing basslines resulting in a gorgeous, summery house re-interpretation that has to be heard to be believed!
as if this werent enough, fresh from an impressive debut on nils and florians save room records we have been lucky enough to secure a percussion led, funk infused remix of >achieving balance< from bright new boys on the block io who round things off nicely and add another dimension to the >suerte ep<.

with this new ep tom clark makes an impressive return to the highgrade release program. following a collaboration with marcus schatz and most recently with benno blome, he now comes back as a solo artist. after only a few beats, you’ll be sure to recognise his signature sound. tom needs surprisingly few elements to build a unique atmosphere and his matchless grooves. on the title track “scorpio“ we find a deep, rolling bassline and a slightly orientally influenced vocal, combined with the typically unique clarkish synth leads, and we’re ready to go. it’s a track that continually keeps the excitement moving while never letting the cat out of the bag, and more than deserves the a-side. then we come to “albino“, also featuring sparkling synths and rolling drums that create an impression of fluidity and an unhurried beginnings, but we also end up in a waterfall… who would have known!? in conclusion comes “sand flea“, as lively as a box of fleas, but not nearly as aggrivating! mister clark is again at his best, with a love for detail, an innate sence for strange sounds and an a significant quantity of leisurely energy, this tune also really hits the mark. this is not the work of a newbie who produces an aggressive sound to prove his talents. the result is the feature of this ep: seldom has an understatement sounded so fresh. + digital-only bonus track “12 notes“!

nymfo has been a part of d&b for well over a decade. over the last 12 years, nymfo has been immersed in djing, in 2005 he won the best dutch d&b dj then went on to win the same title again in 2007. steve survival is a solo production unit and has had many releases on vibez, quarantine, horizons, play music, renegade hardware, critical, dnaudio and shogun ltd. it has had dj support from alix perez, sabre, storm, fabio, phil source, survival, marcus intalex, alley cat and zero t to name a few.

royal bangs are from knoxville. that in itself is a statement: theres not much that comes from knoxville, tennessees third largest city, and even less that gets away. quentin tarantino made it out, but the last citys mayor was allegedly so desperate to escape he now works as the us ambassador in poland. cormac mccarthy moved there as a child, of course, but by the time he d written his second book he was long gone. only johnny knoxville advertises his geographical roots, and quite clearly hes a glutton for punishment. so while just one of royal bangs currently has a passport, that doesnt mean they dont know that royal bangs is their ticket out of town.

the long lost consists of husband & wife alfred (a.k.a. electronic daedelus) and laura darlington. in contrast to the avant electronics and hip hop aesthetics of alfreds music as daedelus, the long lost is a union of two songwriters & producers with a penchant for sad sounds and delicate, electro acoustic melodies. psychedelic lullabies for lovers and the lovelorn. as well as sa ra, laura has also sung for flying lotus. a fascinating and utterly individual project, the long lost take the subject of love away from the cliches and hackneyed wailing of the mainstream and reconnect it to those strange and uncontrollable emotions we re all so in thrall...

the running back sports team is glad to welcome two new players to its roster. dplay and whiz kid manuel tur (see also his brilliant ribn stuff) have caused a great stir with a bouquet of 12-inches for outfits like zurichs beloved drumpoet community or the compost black label as well as knocking out well-made remixes. for instance, their work on kiloos the passion is just adorable. here we have them melted into one organism called dplay, while mtur moves in silence (or in the production credits, if you please). stretching out on the a-side, huub sand is not only a tribute to two of schalke 04s greatest gentlemen, but a prime-example of cavernous, stoic and infective house those two (no not the schalke guys) had quite an impact on. initially planned to come with a remix by the mighty radio slave (please look at cat-no. 012 to see what became of that), our coach could convince the duo to hand out two rather atypical, nonetheless bloodcurdling tunes instead: tschaka kicks some deep dub disco houz styles of the highest orders with riot-like effects on your mind, body & soul. finally, schroulé is a claustrophobic corker, if we have ever seen one. should be the perfect sound track for padded cells and the up-and-coming remake of mel brooks frankenstein. these ruhrpott kids are alright!
