on the flip, there is serious influence from early trance and techno with the warehouse-crushing *in the afterglow*. constructed on the back of an early 90s hard house-esque alien synth patterns and rolling wildly into the deepest depths of the forest rave, until the long-awaited sunlight pads come bursting through the leaves.

nice price deal !!! manchester s techno alchemist and master of the roland tr-808, the enigmatic mr.raw, debuting mancdetroit 12” on win or loose records straight outta toronto ca! long term nightclub shaman on the northwest of england circuit, raw served time in rotterdam s early 90s gabba circles before returning back to manchester to twist brain s n bodies with his wild blend of freestyle techno. raw s witnessed trends in production go from hardware to soft and back again but he s never strayed from a solid rack mount set up based solely around the tr-808. with a few added choice fx processors raw s style is loose n live and captures a pure spirit rarely exercised by today s pacified youth. -perseus dance- sounds like the kind of shit the great ron hardy would jam on, with two copies, for hours. inflicting a sherm-stick flavored mind-blast to the floor that may have indeed caused the good man to blush, we find percolating 808 percussion woven together with a mystic, fizzing lead line and twangy analogue artifacts. darkside acid dragged wailing and whining from rusholmes drains. flip and we have -hard on-: a twisted x-rated porno horror jam. raw s rapid-fire double-speed drum loops firing away while a plethora of abhorrent vox and coital sounds converge onto the track. a total wrecking ball of filth and hellish distortion which just smolders away in the basement of some sadistic nightclub like a rotten but highly intoxicating fungus ready to switch on any passing freaks.

whilst its neighbour has always taken the plaudits on the party front the steely city of sheffield has its own house history, with much of it residing in the warm buzzing darkness of the studio. its here that we find our latest robsoul rookie. a fresh name for the label, but a producer who is far from new to the game. tommy vicari jnr’s first release was pressed to the black gold and released back in 2004. since then there have been sporadic outings, but the last two years have seen a reinvigorated tommy roll out over ten new releases and play a huge part in putting sheffield s house music firmly back on the map. threshold of eternity sees tommy drop the northern grit to replace it with shimmering warmth and sunshine vibes across all four tracks. fidgeting rhythms, chopped samples and groove-heavy beats and bass are spliced together to create an essential feel-good release.

after the success of the first release by ivan iacobucci, holic trax sublabel monoklo now enlists berlin-based martin lewis for three hot tracks featuring a remix from label boss man and japanese don tomoki tamura. no nonsense opener the wax is a supple, rubbery roller with sparse stabs accompanying the infectious groove. -poetry- then sinks down into a more warming and human groove, with smeared synths bringing colour and heat to a loose house groove, before lewis shows his skills at choppy techno with drumcatch. tomoki tamura also remixes this latter track, stripping it right back to a suggestive, infectious final groove with feather light percussion, skewed chords and involving sub bass that laps at the heels of the track.

ruhig comes back after one year with particles ep as first installment of a double ep on midgar. the record opens with particles, an atmospheric detroit influenced cut made out of synthlines dropping like voodoo spells, epic pads and fragmented beats. eddying follows up with a more direct approach to the dancefloor, 4/4 stomping beat and thin hi-hats backed by lasers and passionate ambiances. etere on the b-side gives the records an halfway breath, sounds like a late afternoon walk in the fields of a southern countryside village (with constructions going on somewhere nearby), before to start again with the sweet and eerie perle, where droney pinching drums are flooded by a swarm of dreamy fireflies. idiom to close the ep with a fast syncopated cut, showing the approach of ruhig to any form of musical expression and genre, far from traditional ambient or deep techno and going further, to reach out daring and more demanding levels.

mikkel metal was the first artist on echocord, and the main reason why the label was started back then. after many many releases we are very happy and proud that he now returns with a full lenght album. more than 7 years after his last long-player album mikkel metal returns with a new album for echocord. bypassing dub-techno as the starting point, this is music clearly consistent with earlier output. we are presented with 10 tracks that all evolve with around a melancholic melodic framework. while there is clearly a nod to detroit and another to dub- techno, the overall impression is consistently and unmistakably the sound of mikkel metal. a hypnotic, very enjoyable and thorough return from the danish artist.

releasing an album is a daunting task, especially in dance music. you got to keep it fresh and exciting from the very beginning until the last track, not sticking to one tempo, make tracks that work both at home and in the club and ultimately tell a story with your music. alexander lay-far knows a thing or two about this, having his debut album so many ways out back in 2013. the thing with lay-far and a big reason why we ve always had a soft spot for him is his way of incorporating a certain magic in the tracks that leaves you on an uplifting and optimistic note. therefore we re really excited to release his second album, how i communicate, on local talk. how i communicate is a two part vinyl release which we hope will come as a fresh breeze in these days where so much dance music simply lacks the actual musical aspect or the organic approach. like most producers and djs that are influenced by soul, disco, jazz and the blacker side of electronic dance music its all about the actual tune . listening (or dancing) through this album we hope you ll find your special tune (or tunes!) that hopefully will bring joy to your ears. to his aid lay-far has invited an impressive cast of collaborators such as ashley beedle & darren morris, restless soul, sean mccabe & mark de clive-lowe to give the tracks that little extra something under the watchful eye of lay-far himself. or as lay-far describes it himself the album is about the music as the universal language, the ultimate means of communication, bringing people of the world together. part 2 will be released in the new year...

back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history melodiya, many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called magnitizdat (short of magnetic tape release). it began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. in the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj s mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. plus seven records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.

superb throwback electro sounds of the early noughties on offer here from swiss artist elektrobopacheck, debuting via his self affirming synthesizer music laboratory. this is quite reminiscent of stuff on vitalic s seminal citizen records imprint a while back. highlights being atlantic intertravel and kubusmann calculates which sound similar to the majestic modular tones of japanese telecom or the late night electro funk groove of ride on the waves. sure, he s not trying to re invent the wheel here, but it s all good!
