st. petersburg talent ivan latyshev drops a killer ep on the ever-dependable dessous recordings. ivan has been making waves over the past couple of years with his distinctive brand of deep, groove-heavy house music on labels such as what’s in the box, street king and spaghetti monster - but this to my youth ep sees the young russian step up to another level. the title track shows a deep affiliation for classic house vibes, mixed with some jazzy flourishes and swung grooves. the sense of euphoria is tangible, and the spoken word vocals add a level of house mysticism that will be always welcome on deeper leaning dance-floors. cant go away goes a shade deeper still, bringing layers of delay and reverb to the track that help shape a true slow burner. old ages also highlights ivan’s love of jazz rhythms and sounds, building from a live drum break into a rolling deep house monster - its infectious stuff and suggests ivan latyshev is going to be name to watch in the next months and years.

during their european tour earlier this year, canadian duo jokers of the scene stopped over for a couple of days at club bizarre studio in northern france. the two pair of producers locked up and came up with betaville and breakwater, two killer lo-fi and spaced out tracks. betaville is a fuzzy dream that will make you dance in slow motion with your head in the clouds. boasting a strong melodic and nostalgic feel, it unfolds its warm analog synth pads, old school sequences and drum machine to psychedelic effect. imagine boards of canada wanting to make you dance. even slower is breakwater, a dirtier, chunkier track that ditches the softness of betaville in favour of a more in your face bass line and all together rougher attitude. it chugs along to old fashioned beat box claps and percussion and quirky synth melodies. lastly betaville gets the timothy j fairplay treatment of being violently pulled apart and chucked in all corners. reminiscent of early chemical brothers music, a heavy beat slaps over agressive drugged up analog sound effects while a repetitive, haunting melody screams on top and reverberated vocals whisper in your ears. scary.

limited to 100 copies, chas burns has been producing house music since 96, originally with engineer simon vinyl junkie, and later andrew macari (filter flow). as well as producing under flow he also co-owns low pressings (with hernan cerbello), beat code, boxa records and more devotion (with ben racz). -put my shit on wax- first appeared on the shelves of record stores in 2004. it s release was boxa records (which is still going today) second release. the original press was of 600 and was out of stock very quickly. now you ll need to pay l50 for it on discogs, unless you snap up this highly limited repress (100 copies only - be quick!).

chris carrier delivers a box of steaming fresh hot techno jams with the latest release from his trusty adult only sub-label, sound carrier. over the last five years he has dropped five eps on the label, with this marking sound carrier’s sixth outing. as usual, the sounds here are a little more entrenched in the techno sound ethic.

keeping up the urgent pace set by the strength in numbers collection, thema now turns to a modern master of the jakbeat, d’marc cantu. hailing from ann arbor on the fringes of detroit, cantu has worked for more than a decade developing a sound that carries the torch from the box jam originators of techno and house music. his first appearances were alongside the mighty tadd mullinix (better known as james t. cotton) with their 2 am/fm project, before bringing traxx into the fold for the x2 venture. as a solo artist cantu has shored up on labels as highly regarded as crème organization, m>o>s, nation and desire, bringing a rich, full-bodied sound laden with powerful synth hooks, crafty drum programming and a live, jammed-out delivery that overflows with imagination. given his adventurous tendencies and punchy midwestern finish, cantu is a perfect fit on thema and the six tracks that make up this record show a great deal of the diversity the man is capable of, from dancefloor burners to atmospheric introspections.
