this idea lead to a broad range of styles with something for everyone. we have stopped arguing in the office about which is the best track. they all are.

as christmas 1969 beckoned, jimi hendrix, bassist billy cox, and drummer buddy miles engaged in extensive rehearsals for their highly anticipated appearances at the fillmore east in new york. branded by hendrix as the band of gypsys, the trio worked feverishly rounding such exciting new original material as >izabella< and >machine gun< into form. keenly aware of the special significance his forthcoming concerts represented, jimi wanted to prepare something extraordinary for his audience. to mark the occasion in his own inimitable fashion, jimi readied this special medley of holiday favorites to celebrate both christmas and the dawning of a new decade. this recording was made at baggys studios, a manhattan rehearsal facility the group preferred. it by no means should be considered a polished studio recording made to hendrixs exacting specifications. it is, instead, perhaps even more revealing. this is a glimpse of jimi simply having fun in the company of close friends. the photograph of jimi posing as santa claus was originally organized on behalf of the uk music newspaper record mirror. to help publicize the december 1967 release of axis: bold as love, the groups second album, jimi agreed to pose as santa for the issues cover. an alternate photograph from that session, with jimi bearing gifts in the form of axis: bold as love, is featured here. as an added bonus, also included is jimis playful >three little bears<. this track was recorded with the experience at the record plant in may 1968 during sessions for electric ladyland. bypassed for that album, >three little bears< was originally issued as part of the 1972 posthumous compilation war heroes. it has been unavailable in the us for nearly twenty-five years.

ben gibson arrived on the techno scene in 2006 with the release of the techno-futurist track no signify on jeff mills axis sub-label 6277. the same year he relocated to tokyo all the way from his adopted home new zealand. elaborate, poly-rhythmic and often densely textured, the music he produced during this period contrasted heavily with a lot of the minimal techno popular at the time.

detroit, 1993. the burden brothers, known for their octave one project and 430west record label, start a new sub label called direct beat. it was created to release the techno electro sounds of inner city detroit. in 1995 the label was in full effect and released music produced by friends such as tommy hamilton, keith tucker, mad mike banks, will web and them self.
now 15 years later we know that direct beat was one of the big influences on how electro and techno is today. together with underground resistance, axis, m-plant in detroit and some like minded people in europe and artists such as drexciya, aphex twin, autechre and dopplereffekt it changed the way people looked at techno... it broke away from the dominant 4/4 kick and brought back the funk and emotion that disappeared once house and techno became popular and mainstream music in the early 90s.

the dutchman jeroen verheij aka secret cinema is now looking back on almost twenty years of experience within the field of electronic music. his first production sonar system, which has originally been released on the legendary belgian label hithouse under the alias meng syndicate in 1990 and was re-released two years later on music man, is rightly belonging to the absolute classics of rave techno and has antedated the rotterdam-detroit sound axis with providing a staccato somewhere in between a piercing snare and an acid siren.

perc trax returns with its 30th vinyl release with a split ep showcasing the works of both its newest and most established acts.
first up is ben gibson with 2 tracks that feature on his forthcoming perc trax album >in a realized luck of immanence<. both tracks instantly demonstrate what made jeff mills sign ben to his axis offshoot 6277. bens sound is a dense, atmospheric take on the now-classic uk techno sound of surgeon, regis, ruskin etc and both the rolling bass of >vanished between< and the sharp stabs of >wirklichkeit< prove that he is an artist to watch out for.
on the b-side label boss perc hooks up with the labels canadian connection metalogic to deliver 2 tracks that flit between broken beat and 4/4 rhythms with ease. both tracks feature an attention to detail that both perc and metalogic are known for with endless dubbed out synths and effects keeping the tracks interesting but never getting in the way of the crisp beats. these tracks have already been road tested around the world by perc in recent months and will be a key part of a launch party for this ep in toronto in october.

it has been a while since mighty thor came up with a solid techno banger, but this time he is ready to blow of some steam on the 2nd dynamic reflection release. thor comes up with some serious detroit influenced techno on the aside, expect catchy synthmelodies and smooth percussion at his best! the french guys from sub space put out an awesome remix on the a2. their rework makes you want to funk that shit and reminds you at the old technasia sound! on the flipside sub space comes up with an oldschool, almost axis sounding techno stomper. quality analog stuff is what these guys are capable of and they proof it once again with hypnotic synths and 909 rideloops, a true dancefloor killer! thor is responsible for reworking this original and brings us an amazing remix with even some breakbeat influences in the breakdown. bringin some futuristic feel in this oldschool techno banger with extraordinary uplifting percussion loops he pushes himself to another level with this one! once again a superior 2nd release from the dynamic reflection squad, lets pray for more of this pure quality stuff and keep our eyes on the the future. the scene need more labels like this which reflects the current techno movement and promises loads more of that sweet stuff in days to come..
