out of nowhere, here comes villee with his debut ep chock full of dancefloor gems. from the very first listen we knew we had something special that we needed to release on pressed for time. its a difficult thing to reference classic tracks and artists without sounding like a carbon copy however villee manages this with aplomb. referencing larry heard (check the chords on the inventor), cajual records, french house and the diy free party sound - we think this ep is fantastic! think warm, analogue, looped up, mpc house with swing and you re on the right track

for house heads of a certain persuasion, dj duke is a name that resonates for all the right reasons. the u.s. veteran has been responsible for some of the 90’s most seminal moments, chiefly through tracks such as 12 minutes to do it (under his pleasure dome alias), party time and the prosumer-endorsed deep house classic, heard. he returns here courtesy of emerging imprint solo werks, who host his latest ep, green pastures. a momentous house-led workout, it compounds duke’s reputation as a producer of considerable panache while also acting as an auspicious start to life for the dublin based label. the title track is a grainy, old-school cut that bears all the hallmarks of a dusty analogue-jam and harks back to the days of vintage chicago with the sort of zest you’d expect from a man of duke’s credentials. the other original, skyscapes, is packed to the brim with industrial motifs and is characterised by the sort of effortlessly catchy baseline with which duke has made his name. mysterious and ethereal, it takes the listener on an uncompromising and throughly captivating house journey from the off. on the flip side, we have two stunning remixes, the first of which arrives from new jersey don, ruben candelario aka nicuri. a long-time favourite of nyc-based producers a la joey anderson, nicuri turns green pastures into a dreamy, acid-led space, adding layers of suspense and a glittering vocal intto the mix as he goes. last but not least are dublin-based producers slowburn, who serve up a stunning version of skyscapes. a carefully construed voyage into the deep, it caps off a fine ep with some aplomb.

fuckthegovernment.ltd is a label and is artist duo ran by f.t.g (alfredo trastulli) and music box head honcho, marco riff, two italians with a deep love of analogue-inspired house music and chicago sound. the labels latest once more arrives at us from the label owners, who combine with aplomb on the quite expertly named (ive seen) love from tokyo. for the first time ever, fuckthegovernment.ltd call on a remixer to give the package an extra sheen. in a move thats befitting of the standing for which the label is held, the guys have only gone and nabbed chi-town legend boo williams for remix duties. a killer dj tool that takes the listener on a proverbial journey of sound, his effort not a million miles away from classic williams productions a la mortal trance is sure to win plaudits from discerning house jocks aplenty. the original is an intricate and deep number thats laced with clever cowbells, warm pads and a sporadic vocal that really brings the heat. with such adept producers on show, its perhaps no surprise that fuckthegovernments latest serves up a masterclass in beautiful house music.

as proprietors of the will & ink label, yaleesa hall & malin genie have been maintaining a busy and consistent release schedule of top notch techno sounds, largely releasing their own, well received, productions. the duo appeared on hypercolours 10 years compilation in 2016 with the excellent buchan trap, and weve been blessed to secure a full single release with the on-point pair. the mechanical funk of artin swings with plenty of assured groove, the shuffling hats, dense kicks and dubby stabs that ping pong across this fierce production mark this out as a real killer cut. dario & marco zenker, aka the zenker brothers, take time out from their busy ilian tape operations to remix artin into a brutal yet funky techno goliath. congas perpetually roll forward, with frenetic 909 hats and raw and ready stabs in what may well be one of the zenkers finest remixes to date. the essence of funk continues in hall & malins music, with cahen, a great slab of compelling techno that never slips too far into darkness, instead keeping an ever evolving groove and some abstract drone like synthesis to keep the mood buoyant. wrapping up the release is brown, a track that finishes as urgently as it starts, perhaps with a cap doffed to the purpose maker sounds of a certain jeff mills, but broadening the palette to allow some trippy sound architecture and an effective breakdown mid way through. modern day techno supplied by a duo that will most certainly flourish over the coming months, yaleesa hall & malin deliver the goods aplomb on this hypercolour single.

after launching into memory box with aplomb on the deadly acid stomp 12inch, robin ball steps up on the london-based imprint once again with the saucy tones of his latest four track ep. drop it down low and its accompanying dub mix are classy twists on the tech house formula that lean towards old-skool methods while keeping the sleaze factor ramped up high. remember takes a more tripped out tribal approach, with the vibes mix providing a more subtle twist to the warm, melodic undulations of the full fat version. it s an ep loaded with personality and flair for sophisticated dancefloors.

charmin records announce their 5th release, a split ep coming from label boss florist and close friend/collaborator tilman. from their base in east germany, charmin have been slowly but surely putting together an impressive catalogue of releases and this next offering keeps up this trend with aplomb. the ep shows that, while remaining deeply rooted in house, charmin can bring many different colours and sounds to the table.

one of the founding members of apollonia, shonky was responsible for his label’s very first release back in 2012 with ‘the minneapolis touch’. outside of working on the trio’s debut lp ‘tour a tour’, shonky has been relatively quiet on the solo tip. here on apollonia’s 25th release we’re treated to four new cuts from the berlin-based parisian, kicking off with plombie&#768,,re (plumber in english). shonky injects a variety of unusual sounds, which revolve around a jaunty bassline, while voices dip in and out of the background, repeating the mantra ‘house music’ together with other difficult to decipher vocal clips. the track has a catchy rhythm that bounces along with aplomb. up next ‘house me’ is a sleazy, mischievous cut with a deadly low end and a seductive vocal that urges you to ‘house me’. as the bassline rumbles, high pitched effects add a hypnotic element to the track. badboy business.on the b-side we have ‘perchee’, which is powered by cleverly layered percussion, which is almost ‘live’ sounding. another one of those ‘shonky’ basslines gets us straight into the groove, with utterly contagious beats – this is one to shake the dance floor down its core. finally, ‘cosmopolis’ has that inner city realness flowing through with the chatter of a street corner in the background, a killer b-line and one of those classic vocal samples that is oh so familiar and gets you nodding your head as soon as you hear it. and there it is, four dance floor cuts with plenty of depth and groove in true shonky style… c est formidable!

a diverse and damaging three track ep from bone, exploring and exhibiting detroit techno musically, figuratively and spiritually. a1. here to stay (won t fade away) a nod to detroit as an ever-present - a marker by which others are measured, bone s first track on the detroit ep, here to stay (won t fade away) makes a statement above and beyond just being a fine example the music it refers to. the sumptuous melody that opens the track is accompanied by a substantial yet soft, almost warm, kick, a combination that somehow provides an atmosphere and depth way beyond merely the of the sum of its parts. more rolling percussion and drums are crisply ushered in before the here to stay (won t fade away) vocal begins looping over the composition. linear, straight up loops, grooves and rhythm give a consistent sense of railroad-esque motion atop of an ever-present vein of lush synth and melody. a track that is certainly here to stay. a2. detroit is ... soul with more of an emotional focus than symbolic this time, it s clear this one is from bone s heart. detroit is ... soul, ducks and weaves in the grey area between house and techno, the initial percussion that is brushed over the kick giving more of a house swing than a techno groove. the on/off, cut-and-dry synth chords contrast with the looser fluidity in here to stay (won t fade away), and gives a real sense of intent and desire. the real focal point however is the profound vocal that comes swirling over the top, -detroit is what i love, detroit is what i need, detroit is where i m from, detroit s the air i breathe?- no explanation necessary. b. detroit is ... hard bone rounds off part 1 of his detroit ep with aplomb. where the previous two tracks have drawn on the emotional and symbolic significance of detroit as a place and as an ideal, detroit is ... hard, cuts straight to the chase. utilizing the same vocal sample as detroit is ... soul, bone feeds things through the grinder and comes out with a late night dancefloor destroyer that blends millsian fury and red planet mystique with the archetypal subject detroit aesthetic. chaotic arpeggiated melody, indignant claps and breakneck drums and percussion are the chosen company for bone s words on this flipside to detroit is ... soul. detroit is ... hard, undoubtedly to become a mainstay for sweaty after-hours affairs the world over

emotional especial gathers pace with an eighth release from richard sen, a man whose cultured touch has had a hand in various strands of the uk underground for the past two decades. graffiti artist, graphic designer, music curator, dj and producer are all vocations richard sen has done at one point or another. here he goes solo with the ghost train ep, a dark and brooding release of old school meets new school house jack that takes its cues from 80s new york, italian house and the nascent uk acid house that sen himself documented with aplomb on a 2012 compilation for strut. naggingly familiar samples and a low slung box jam groove drive the spectral title cut forward, whilst sens mastery of delay is shown with aplomb on the dub version that closes out the record. nestled in between is the highlight however in *meteor shower* where discoid basslines merge with psychedelically charged keys and hollowed out steppers percussion.

kiwanuka, a 25 year-old uk native of ugandan heritage, was raised in north london where he split his time between session work and local gigs. along the way, having found footing as a solo artist, he was signed to communion records, then polydor, and has since performed throughout europe and north america too touring in direct support of adele. he made his way through nashville this past summer with just enough pause and aplomb to commit these morsels to tape. the a-side *you ve got nothing to lose* is an original composition, featuring the buzzards dominic davis on upright bass and cory younts on piano, joined also by fellow balladeer lillie mae rische on fiddle. their contributions transform his work into a stone-cold groove with almost orchestral underpinnings, making it a fitting extension of their previous blue series. the single also features a chilling rendition of townes van zandts infamous *waitin round to die* on the b-side, the perfect compliment to the timbre and mood of the a-side.

french producer kool vibes returns with a third offering on his own self titled label, continuing to mine that sound classically rooted in the early 90s east coast swing of new york and new jersey. vibes abound on > u got me< with the titular vocal hook leading a orchestra of bouncing percussive rhythms, spritely neon dipped keys and an infectious bassline thump, whilst > house music< shows kool vibe dipping into the sounds of vintage murk productions with equal aplomb

the same people behind emotional rescue launch as fine sister imprint in the shape of emotional rescue, with a near perfect insight into how the label will operate thanks to nzambi - a quite stunning full length album from jason letkiewicz under his alan hurst moniker. if you consider yourself an avid purchaser of vinyl, you will no doubt have added some letkiewicz heat to your collection in recent times, with excellent releases as steve summers and innergaze in recent times. the alan hurst project sees the brooklyn producer in more laid back form, indulging his passion for library sounds and experimental electronics with just as much aplomb. allegedly commissioned to soundtrack a film on modern haitian voodoo, nzambi is a woozily intoxicating thirteen track set that opens your senses to a true darkness in this producers palette of sounds that has not really been explored before.

hailing from ireland, shane linehan is committed to showcasing the finest that new jersey-styled house music has to offer. having impressed with his release for local talk, he returns to his own basic grooves imprint to get the good times rolling with aplomb. >ilinx< wears its heart on its sleeve with a crisp beat that makes all the right moves, while a slick organ chord line takes centre stage in an upbeat revelry written for the start of the weekend. >so now you know< on the flip is a more contemplative affair, although no less steeped in bumping house culture. the keys are played in a more downbeat refrain and the beats a little more restrained, but this is still very much a dancefloor burner

this 4-track ep is the first official release from new jerseys mikeq, one of the unquestioned leaders of the current vogue-house scene, and follows in the wake of a slew of self-released tunes he has dropped over the past few years. let it all out is also the second record on kingdoms fade to mind imprint, which has already received mountains of praise despite its short discography. largely built upon raw, upfront drum sounds, recycled snippets of hip-hop and r&b, and, most importantly, the ever-present >ha< (itself a repurposed masters at work sample), vogue house seemingly offered the sort of sound that tastemaking and blog-reading djs would snap up with aplomb. hell, even diplo championed the ballroom scene. yet, for whatever reason, the expected vogue-house explosion hasnt really happened. while a handful of non-ballroom producers and djs (most coming from the world of bass music) have experimented with the genre, the music essentially continues to hum along in the underground.

the finest moustache bearer since selleck rocked the tv as magnum pi returns. thats correct, sccucci manucci drop a long awaited second release on the fledgling imprint, enlisting a premier cast of continental friends to lay down some class a discoteria! securing the talents of runaways jacques renault is no mean feat for the self styled purveyors of fine music, and the on the prowl boss serves up a beefy disco funk edit in the vein of his killer public release twelve from last year. in support, a cast of rising uk talent serve note of their budding prowess, with tenth circles zoo look indulging in some monstrously expansive beatdown a la the revenge on the aptly titled >early doors<. casino times provide the why didnt i think of that moment with >thats the truth<, a bashmore style take on the de la soul & chaka khan collab which has been burning up sound systems from london to petrcane this summer. young one picture house ends proceedings with aplomb on >blaxploitation< a gritty shaker reminiscent of eddie c in his pomp.

raf pisani and marco conte, aka audiomatiques, have long been involved in techno but its since they began working together as audiomatiques that everything began to click. together with roberto capuano, an artist who has already released for loose, claque musique, monique musique and suara, the duo have delivered 3 sterling tracks, which are backed by a remix from rino cerrone, for loose. cerrone takes full advantage of his position as label boss and places his remix of >so bad< in pole. its a walloping but low slung affair riddled with hypnotic rises and false drops which build incredible tension. in original form, >so bad< is a pounding affair. the focus is centred around an unholy bass heavy kick with just the minimum of percussive flourishes and vocal effects doing the rest with aplomb. >mind trip<, while equally as heavy, is fluid and slick. swinging tribal vibes and some clever effects work paired with an airtight arrangement makes for a surefire club burner. finally, the bizarre yet compelling leads of the aptly titled >crazy synth< close proceedings with a fever-dream fervour. original and memorable, this is a genuinely anthemic cut.

crowdpleaser and st. plomb on third ear... what a nice surprise! four cuts of twisted, skewed, earthy house music veering to techno. served up with aplomb. great vibe and quality production on all cuts, just like we are used to get from third ear!

system of survival bring forth their latest vinyl release and look to pay homage and celebrate the italian club scene and music of the 1990s, with their brand new production, the aptly titled, >italia 1990<. their 14min treatment encapsulates the feeling and atmosphere of those first underground parties, where a deep, dirty and jackin melting pot of chicago house and detroit techno, opened the eyes, ears and minds. including those of system of survival. a mighty original deserves a equally large remix package, and the label have delivered with aplomb. sos have called upon their ibiza-based buddies jose de divina & javi murdok and nima gorji, who in turn deliver two beautifully deep reworks that could grace any a-side.

the somewhat mysterious ld nero debuts with a release on peter fords venerable trelik imprint. the nites out ep is dipped in the kind of glossy production sheen that one expects to hear from a seasoned producer, with opening jam >nite out (dusk dub)< nailing that early 90s, stripped back house sound with effortless aplomb. the deep and hypnotic drum programming undulates next to neat organ stabs forming for a truly rhythmic dancefloor jacker. flip over for the dawn dub of the same track, with both name and sound suggesting this ones aimed squarely at those still standing and/or dancing come sunrise. this time a more ethereal atmosphere permeates, with a refreshing live and un-sequenced feel to the production

footandmouths forth release sees the return of the prodigal sons s.a.s. after the success of fam001 they are back with another hot slice of vintage house pie! the a side is a great little vintage house rework, complete with great keyboard stabs, driving bass and ace vocal, tweaked for perfect peak time performance. a2 is a superb mid-tempo electro dub of the vocal…blinding! the flip features dreaming and were hit boogie territory with some aplomb! a serious 80s groove underpins soulful vocal and electro beats. the dub then hikes the tempo and jacks the groove into ny dub underground! great package from the s.a.s mystery men!

bergerac is the new record label set up by uk producer and dj red rack’em (aka danny berman) to showcase the more dancefloor end of his music productions. danny is well known for his wonky disco outings as hot coins on tirk and also his deep as hell beatdown house on untracked. his style of production and djing have recently taken a slightly more banging angle due to the influence of larger scale festival gigs such as glastonbury, snowbombing and the big chill. so it seemed like the perfect time to start a label focussing on house and techno for the more discerning dancefloor. the label artwork will feature bespoke illustrations from german artist silke eiselt of all the houses danny has lived in chronologically. how much more fucking house can you get than that? how i program is a raw, heads down, whacked out banger, which straddles the wafer thin divide between house and techno with aplomb. with a massive loud donking bass noise, seedy late night atmosphere and danny shouting about how he programs his shit - this is some freaky deaky peak time business. next up is bonn, a warm crackly rhodes driven halcyon house moment, which evokes the slightly majestic and nostalgic vibe of people dancing alone together in a hot room at the end of the night. cheering sourced directly from bonn in 1982 mixes with naive keywork and distant female chants the first bergerac ep closes with it happens to us all, which could be an ode to prematurely greying men, the onset of senility or occasional farting in public places. its definitely a prime slice of wrong house with some seriously french hi hats and dubbed out bassline action though. yes, its more syncopated than an exploding castanet factory but thats how we like that kind of funk

allow us to introduce creatures of habit. the brainchild of dj/producer brenden wesley, the boston outfit s membership boasts a wild band of guest players, with musical virtuosos and analogue gear whores alike. relentless jam sessions between wesley and close pals chas bronz & robbie roland yielded lustre , their debut offering on the esteemed solardisco label. an aural innuendo anchored by a hypnotic, low-slung bassline, the song deftly trades in warm, flirtatious instrumentation and studio wizardry. through his akult party, brenden s not only honed his chops as a dj, he s befriended a whole host of the new disco cognoscenti. amongst them are brooklyn s own nick chacona, who recently released his debut long player on moodmusic to much acclaim, and dfa darlings runaway, who have been reeled in for remix duties. both artists head straight into house territory with decidedly different results. chacona shoots for the stars with his cosmic take on the original, adding just the right amount of sleaze and putting in one of his finest reworks in recent memory. runaway deepen things out with aplomb, dusting off the rhodes to drive their quirky mix home. connecting the dots between boston and brooklyn discotheques, this ep marks quite the auspicious debut for creatures of habit.
