next up on africa seven is the second edition of our -african funk experimentals- lps. with these we took some of our favourite african artists, choose the most funky we can find and then put together a compilation of their choicest and funkiest tracks. of course that may not be their most popular or best selling tracks..., but that s just fine. we are digging for the funk.

here at bearfunk we have been pretty busy as of late it was a casual visit to geneva just like any other. we had just finished a buzzing set and soon after we found ourselves talking to a five bearded academic types. it turns out they were a bunch of theoretical physicists out on a cosmologists night out. they work them hard at cern and that day the large hadron collector had been a real beast rebooting five times before lunch. they were pissed off and needed a new challenge. we offered them a job on the spot and they promptly moved to our london hq working on a wage of tea, vinyl and nandos. we set them a challenge. build us a time machine! they started soaking up all those bearfunk-groove-boson particles and. you know what? they did it! a time machine of our own. our first task, jump back in time to 1985 and retrieve us something really cool. set controls to the manhattan office to celluloid records. fresh from their hit with herbie hancocks rockit, spearheading rap with fab five freddys change the beat and afrika bambata stompers the legendary label is preparing to release the debut album from nyc-paris emigre lord funk.

seems like somethings going on across the pond at the moment with seemingly blossoming, or at least rejuvenated scenes in the united states and canada. our last handful of releases on freerange have included artists from montreal, tujuana, pittsburgh and chicago and were about to add los angeles to the list with this new one from justin jay and ulf bonde. the young producers have been steadily building steam with a number of fine releases the last couple of years and we welcome them to freerange for their debut ep entitled indecision. the title track sets the mood with a low-slung, super-deep house groove complete with an intimate vocal and a charming simplicity which contributes to the powerful end result. elements come into focus then disappear in a fog of reverb whilst playful guitar picks add a live jammed feel to the loping groove giving things a bob moses/francis harris kind of vibe

our parisian edit friend reverend p hits us with a 4 track ep loaded with some serious boogie and disco heat. concentrating on the sounds of gladys knight (a side) and george duke (b side), reverend p decided to edit em not once but twice...ouble action = double fun :) the a-side tracks are two uptempo numbers with gladys while the flip comes with one mid tempo boogie tune and a high energy disco cut from mr duke. solid gamm material for anyone down with the more soulful sounds of disco!

our french friend steven wobblejay strikes back! after the sublime shake your tingsz ep (qe 45), steve presents again some dope deep raw tunes. lots of old school flava with a new school twist! his partnership with pablo valentino as creative swing alliance (wolf music, faces, tsuba a.o.) has been a great base for developping his own style. another great talent is past, present and future quintessentials artist mat chiavaroli, who’s delivering a rugged and freestylish remix. hang out - the way we love it!

finale sessions is excited to have another parisian on our superb roster and janeret is not one to sleep on that s for sure. so we are getting right to the music with the first track midnight soul one of my favorites for sure with its beautiful keys and its rich pads and it s enormous bass this track is a latenight beater for sure. track two-contrast-is more on the techier side of things with more pads and a think basline no question a floor pumper it also has really nice drums to flavor that nice vocal. track three subdub this track is more for the dub techno crowd for sure with its super deep chords and its deep sub ambiance sound track four ehtereal electro madness is i am going to say

we are very proud to announce that we have signed arovane aka uwe zahn for echocord. uwe is in our world a legend within the electronic music scene. he started to do releases on the old berlin labels din and city-centre-offices. he is known for being one of the best producers ever within the idm & electronica scene. back in the 90’s he listened to the music of basic channel, maurizio and fluxion a lot. this sound is timeless. in the summer of 2015 he started to record a couple of dub sounds and beats beside his collaboration work and the production of his new album. he talked to fluxion and told him about the growing project. he liked the tracks very much and connected it with echocord and the modul ep was born.

2016 starts with warm welcome on board of our next russian representative - julia govor, with her original *open possibility*, supported by kamran sadeghi and ricardo villalobos.

soft talk is the latest alias that natal zaks - our longtime danish friend and a musician we have been constantly releasing under different monikers throughout the last 5 years - picked out for us. he is hands down the most talented producer we have ever met and it is always a privilege to be able release his music under any name he chooses. we have seen his music go through many transformations and they were always for the best. this time we feel the exact same thing, that this is our favorite music ever and we will never want to release anything else again. that is never true of course, but the mercy ep does feel a lot like that.

mister ho and heap are ambassadors of the river danube. this is their first offering for the esp institute. on side a, collision resistance throws us into the bowels of an underground sex lair with an adrenaline-laden heartbeat for a kick drum, a rough dose of fisting illustrated by the combination of bassline with low-tom and an unrelenting snare that whips us raw into submission. somewhere in between the waves of punishment we can start to audibly pick up tortured moans of endurance and pleasure, but maybe its time we pull our minds from the gutter, wipe the sweat from our brow and flip the record for a reward. with side b’s veils of the beloved, mister ho & heap deliver us via speedboat to the white isle, coasting along to bouncy staccato bass notes and machine bleeps as a euphoric chord progression puts us in an 808 state of mind. the percussion arrangement and phasing string flourishes are introduced through a filter, opening slowly as if coming up for air from a beautiful blue abyss. these two songs are neither too salty nor too sweat

in the spirit of 1960s and 1970s futurism, when tuned in musical explorers developed avant-garde music that reflected mans newly expanded frontiers temporal and beyond, berlin based argentine producer nico purman brings us aom002 on his label art of memory. themes of exploration, new horizons, and a deepening appreciation of our place in the expanding infinite are the concepts nico evokes with aom002.

while we love to dance at correspondant, we have also been known to think from time to time to, so it s exciting for us to have been given the opportunity to combine the two things when presented with some new music from two of our favourite producers, marvin and guy. as such, correspondant 42 represents a more conceptual approach for the italian duo, informed by long countryside drives, the names of classic cars as learned from an illustrated childrens book, a yearning to move away from the pack of identikit dance music and a need to connect with their music in a physical way, as provided by the recorded hand clapping refrain running throughout the tracks.

dueve is a very mysterious project, probably due to the intense (albeit exotic) eastern folk instrumentation that populate their sonic structures. rené audiard & ali Çak&#305,,r have been exploring a bit of it all from crunchy techno grooves to emotionally charged slow drives, and together they managed to create a very peculiar sonic balance that captivates from the moment it passes our ears.

it’s been a while but hey-ho, coincidence is back on vinyl. the tracks we got from aussie based female dj trinity were simply too analog sounding, so slapping it on wax was the logical thing to do. the vinyl release adds remixes by two of our alltime heroes - steve stoll and daniela la luz. basically: the originals are deep and darkish, the steve stoll rework is a rework in one smooth jam so with plenty of energy while daniela’s version does it really smart and housey. so on with the friggin show!

(first pressing on marbled orange 10 vinyl) new material by microworld from transmat, styrax leaves & millions of moments fame. everybody knows microworld from his legendary ep on derrick may s transmat label in 1999. his output has been rather limited since then, with only a handful of releases on labels like styrax leaves and millions of moments. he sent us a demo because he liked our recent releases and we were thrilled to say the least. the best detroit techno to come out of australia, and thats a fact! first pressing on marbled orange 10inch vinyl.

the third edible release comes from a producer weve admired for many, many years. a consistent and truly dependable master of the jackin groove since the late 1990s, brett johnson has flexed his musical muscle for some of our favourite labels. singles for derrick carters classic, dj sneaks magnetic, freerange and visionquest have been record box staples for eats everything over the years, so its a big fat hello and welcome to brett on the snack attack ep.

our little dirt crew sub label spiel started out in late 2013 with three excellent releases, the first two by clancy featuring remixes by urulu and prins thomas followed by a stellar ep from mercury. after a hiatus spiel is back for 2016.

its one year since we started this adventure and we want to celebrate pressing our first vinyl. for this special event we have onboard one of our best friends and someone we respect massively, no other than oscar mulero. he his providing two futuristic reworks of uncuts track beneath, floor orientated but mental at the same time, with flanged synth sequences and scientific drum programming making two techno tools that will crush sound systems worldwide. aside from the remixes, an own rework of beneath is made by the hd substance & leandro gamez duo as well as a brand new original track called f9, arpegio madness, concrete beats and solid structures as we should expect from this two veterans. four solid cuts of no joke modern techno made by those who know for those who know.
