dungeon acid, bred in gothenburg’s (sweden) obscure music scene during the eighties and nineties, releases his second 7inch on hoga nord rekords. dog acid and sex beat focuses on those remote corners where jean-louis huhta have rooted his musicality. with legendary bands like cortex, anti cimex and the skull defekts on his resume, huhta is most definitely one of the most interesting artists in sweden!
the music on this 7inch breathes sex, concrete and dark seas. the tracks differ in instrumentation but they expresses the same feeling: uncomplicated and straightforward components, perfectly balanced in relation to each other, shutting down unnecessary body function, aiming for your lower back. spastic curling synthesisers rests upon soundwaves heavier than the swell against the norwegian north atlantic coast.

hybrid techno tracks full of tension on time to express number 30, presented by label founder peter van hoesen. the belgian producer takes up the opportunity to expand upon his previous work on the coast to coast ep. no longer exclusively restricted to straight 4/4 rhythms, van hoesen s music investigates hybrid, broken grooves infused with a clear sense of spatial sonic awareness. this is made clear with the first two tracks, towards manifestation and fox tactics. on the second half of the ep van hoesen launches two solid techno cuts, shifting from dense bassline work (concrete varition) to percussive, shuffling grooves (fox tactics). as with all previous time to express outings a specific i ching hexagram was chosen to accompany this release. hexagram #10 ( treading upon the tail of the tiger ) refers to advancement with care and ways of respectful progress. the title of the ep is a direct reference to the first line of this intriguing hexagram. nine at the beginning will be released on vinyl and digital formats on october 23rd 2017. a specially designed t-shirt will be made available at the same time, interpreting hexagram #10 through its design.

a complex web – the story of dive position and the shining path ... began in 1982 when peter miller (aka dr. william s ray – vocals, tapes, guitar) met andrew millar (aka maurice spectograph the nose-y pieman – program execution) in gold coast, australia. while sharing a similar taste in music, they decided to form a band, so dive position was born. equipped with a korg synthesiser and tascam 4-track recorder, they -wanted to have the sound of kraftwerk, the groove of can, and the menace of throbbing gristle-, ending up with -a cross of suicide and the residents-, as peter recalls. in a local record shop they met stig andre leonardson (aka vincent blackshadow), who joined the duo on percussion and drum machine programming. their motto was -now is then-. dive position then became the fatal charm around 1984, and the fatal charm became the shining path who eventually released their only album -basic training manual- in an edition of only 250 copies, most probably in 1986. the band then started to drift apart, and shortly after andrew sadly passed away – this compilation -now is then- comprised of previously unreleased dive position and the shining path material is dedicated to his memory.

million brazilians formed in portland, oregon in 2006. founding members grant corum and suzanne stone have been central to the band since its inception, while a rotating line-up backs them depending on the latest vision for the sound. tip! the band carry out their own interpretation of a genre bending ethos that has evolved throughout the american underground. drifting between boundless compositions, focused energetic improvisations and experimental collaborations that embrace a weird sort of transcendence. their next installment red rose and obsidian was recorded in maine and engineered by big blood’s caleb mulkerin. both he and the band deliver a powerful yet fragile and personal release. the mythical and evocative recordings are inspired by maine s rugged coastlines, mournful ripples of sound wash up on the shore, whilst a lonesome, at times harrowing saxophone drifts through the rolling mountains, providing unsettling melodic interludes. electronic treatments veil organic sounds, a fleeting whistle meets spontaneously with spacey flutes, mutated rock rhythms are topped off with the soaring vocals of suzanne stone who leads the listeners into the magical world of the million brazilians.

port o brien is dead, long live waters. these new songs veered away from the frequently loose, punchy anthems of port o brien, and as van pierszalowski intensively pieced each one together, he sought a bigger sound – something louder than he could play on his own. so van returned to oslo, where his new journey began.

quazarz came to the earth from somewhere else, a musical ambassador from his place to ours. somehow, through fire or through fury, the palaceer of shabazz palaces caught wind of the tale, and it is through his prism that we hear the story. the beach was there, and atlaantiis, and chemical alterations and cell memories and andre norton, richard k. morgan, and always octavia butler. there were killings and there were votes, and brutality in both. there was sound and there were other worlds, and there was a vastness so participation sometimes came only at the edges. and the palaceer coasted down with the alien notion, like quazarz, and so became. on quazarz when they look at this place they see the inhabitants, the humans, but they don’t assess as we do. and so quazarz was sent to meet a cat with vibration, a creative and courageous, caring, compassionate dude that stood out. the dude was a drug dealer, but that was neither here nor there, until his dealings squashed the rendezvous, leaving our alien alone to figure out what this place is really all about. the vinyl release includes a download code.

the first release on youth - a new label from andrew lyster, comes from portland based artist yard. hailing from the dark woods of the west coast of the united states, yard brings together a collection of tracks from the archives alongside some new material. canopy and white fog were originally released on the album deciduous flood plains, and have been reworked for this release. marshall acid is pressed to vinyl for the first time having previously only been available digitally via event horizon. yard’s gritty sound evokes a spectrum of gnarled city life to organic atmospheres. the release comprises of field recordings, micro-cassette mangles, bass kicks, a live jam between x0xb0x and a modded tr-606 and water drops percolating through the mixes to get that urban hum and grit running up against the forest.

vesa-matti builds frequency converters during the day and at night he is living life as a dj, producer and sound enthusiast. both the man and his music originate from the sunny city of vaasa on the west coast of finland. recorded in his previous studio, located in an old brick building on miller street, the late night sessions in a building that mostly hosted rock bands resulted in several hours of recorded drum patterns, loops and synth lines creating a fascinating fusion of nordic-flavoured dub aesthetics and twisted sound manipulations.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. the self-proclaimed funkiest band on the west coast of africa, the heads funk band, could arguably make that claim for the whole continent. featuring the slick guitar of felix ‘feladey’ odey, the slinky drumming of eddie offeyi and the swirling keyboard chops of kevin ‘fortune’ coburn, nobody was funkier. and that’s not even taking into account the dance floor monsters they were releasing at the same time as akwassa.

my cube is cube’s first vinyl lp and it is a multifaceted, kaleidoscopic listen, containing a multitude of moods and atmospheres. it sounds like the west coast’s answer to container, and will appeal to fans of aussie synth-punks total control just as much as it will to fans of regis, silent servant, and their seminal downwards record label.

hey everyone, dont be alarmed as we understand that you just heard of us a few weeks back. here we are again with another doobified doozie of a 12inch. from the furthest reaches of the canadian west coast comes a concoction by three well known faces that have a long history of working together, they prefer to remain anonymous for this 12inch for reasons beyond us. were not that good at keeping secrets and have a suspicion that you hear the rambling house that is emitted from this trio brings to your ears will recall something very familiar. johnny lumière and the triads, originally conceived as side characters of the adventures of t-bar and salary man cartoon (never published). the music was recorded during break intervals in the cartoon writing sessions (still seeking illustrator). file this under mystified house with a splash of sunshine. ps:weve been doing our own printed sleeves for the last few records from a really cool print house here in berlin. we think they look unique as they are a print/ fold out designed by our friend dave girard. people seem to be into them and figured we should say that as we are only doing limited runs of them.

as &me’s last two eps on keinemusik have been hitting the bulls eye of public perception immediately, his km034 for sure will meet high expectations from djs and crowd alike. what should one do within this sort of spotlight? boil up the same old formula? milk the cow? play it safe? well, &me is rather going for the ‘don’t overthink it and just do whatever you like’-option. which in case of this “one on one”-ep is a collaborative effort with english singer/songwriter-enigma fink, that’s letting musicality rule over functionality.
