200 copies - vinyl only - giant records sees in the new year with a killer ep from a bright new producer from poland, by the name of, mariuz kryska, mariuz offers up two peak time grooves here with remix duties falling on, sascha dive and giant head honcho grant dell. the first track up is low jam, which sees the original mix dive into a deep drum lead swing reminiscent of old todd terry beats, that have gone before, all topped off with a spoken word and tight hats and rides. next up is sascha dive - giving low jam a slowed down dubby feel with some sweet dubbed-out stabs that evolves into that deep house sound that sascha has mastered over the years. next cut is no perspective mariuzs original mix is a relentless bass heavy work out which weaves around some slick west coast gangsta rhymes and detroit style strings and pads. grant dells take on no perspective leans on the detroit style pad, from the original and adds some off kilter 808 beats that sit nicely along some smart 303 stabs and the gangsta rhyme which then merges into a slick techno jam with added breakbeats.

following the success in 2017 of the koharu kisaragi/ryuichi sakamoto collaboration neo-plant, uk label lag records continues its revival of vintage electronic esoterica with kissh&#333,, tennyo, the 1984 lp by joe hisaishi, premier film composer of japan. whilst known worldwide for his elegiac scores to studio ghibli classics like princess mononoke and spirited away, it s a different kind of soundtrack behind kissh&#333,, tennyo, intended as it was to be a musical accompaniment to an 80s manga of the same name. it s also a showcase of hisaishi s lesser known talents as an electronic musician, shortly before he became composer of choice for world-renowned directors such as hayao miyazaki and takeshi kitano. on kissh&#333,, tennyo we hear hisaishi unleash synth arpeggios with all the suspense of a giallo horror. his cold minimalist ambience evokes the likes of terry riley. tracks like &#34880,,,,,,,,,&#12398,,,,,,,,,&#25239,,,,,,,,,&#20105,,,,,,,,, ( blood feud ) meanwhile lighten the mood, running at car chase speed with the bounce of early ymo. all in all, befittingly beguiling music for the cartoon tale of a modern femme fatale who has the powers of an ancient deity (the eponymous kissh&#333,,,,,,,,, tennyo or &#21513,,,,,,,,,&#31077,,,,,,,,,&#22825,,,,,,,,,&#22899,,,,,,,,, , to use the album s japanese title). in the same spirit of the manga, lag records have combined the old with the new on kissh&#333,,,,,,,,, tennyo. licensed by tokuma japan communications, the original release from classic anime label animage comes with new artwork by luna monogatari, and a remastering courtesy of jerome schmitt at the airlab. a download card and poster will be included with the gatefold. lp which comes on standard black vinyl.

calendar crowd was the duo of alan heaton and terence tiernan who met in their hometown of widnes, cheshire as schoolboys and played together in various bands in the ‘70s. in the ‘80s they formed a 6-piece band called room for humans and recorded one single“telephone telephone / girlfriend”. when the band split and alan and terence continued as calendar crowd in a more experimental direction. their influences were wide reaching: kraftwerk, neu, cabaret voltaire, eno, pil, and joy division.

house heaven on 12-inch. a lofty description, but one that fits most excellent unlimited’s latest offering perfectly. in 1990, boy george and simon rogers (the fall) made a record called “generations of love” for george’s post-culture club project, jesus loves you. legendary nyc dj and producer bruce forest was one of several big names brought in to do a set of remixes, and the better days veteran got to work on several contrasting versions of the cut. the mixes heard here, done at london’s famed olympic studios, are slices of utter ecstasy for anyone who has a taste for ‘90s deep house euphoria and ambient dancefloor excursions, but were unfortunately lost amongst the countless alternate mixes. suffice to say, meu is taking matters into our own hands and has remastered and properly packaged these tracks, directly sourced from forest himself, with the full intention to give this erstwhile dollar-record the respect it deserves. the jazz mix opens with a winding piano solo by andy whitmore (spandau ballet, terence trent d’arby, soul ii soul) that lures the listener into a hypnotic groove that could quite comfortably go on forever but here is constrained by our modesty and the 12-inch format. (a tip for the adventurous dj: flipped to 33rpm the tune becomes an epic balearic chugger, a late-night psylocibic alternative for the heads.) the synth-heavy sounds of the ambient mix on the flip side harken back to the chill-out rooms of the ‘90s but twenty-some years later bring the best kind of vintage charm.

robert rental was the stage name of robert donnachie (1952?2000), a british pioneer of post-punk, diy, and industrial music. originally from port glasgow, scotland, he moved to the south of england with thomas leer in the late 1970s where he met glenn michael wallis. glenn was recording music with the group heute and leaving to start his solo projects nkvd and konstruktivists. both were heavily involved with throbbing gristle and the industrial records crew. in the summer of 1979, robert invited glenn to his studio in battersea to jam. robert on guitar and glenn on an edp wasp synthesizer. for each session that summer they would play for about 40 minutes, maybe longer, stoned. robert suggested they record it, many times erasing and over recording one session for the next. the music had no titles, as they were never intended to be released. on these recordings, robert enjoyed playing like robert fripp of king crimson, while glenn channeled wolfgang flur of kraftwerk. influenced by krautrock bands like can, neu!, cluster/harmonia, as well as terry riley and brian eno the duo forged a unqiue brand of industrial music. tape loops and synthesizer sounds played backward conjure dark ambient moods. all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the lp is housed in a jacket that features a drawing by robert rental from glenn?s archives as well as a handwritten note from robert to glenn. each copy includes 2 photo postcards featuring a transcription of robert?s letter and liner notes from glenn wallis.

trained multi-genre dancer, dj, producer, mc and pure force of energy: meet william djoko, the latest talent from one of house music s foremost cities, amsterdam. djoko s effervescent performances and eclectic musical melange of disco, tech, afro, leftfield and straight up house first earned him a name in his native stomping grounds at places like trouw and are now propelling him onto the international dj circuit with slots at london s printworks and elrow town, circoloco in ibiza and concrete in paris among others. cutting his production teeth in the late zeros on amsterdam imprint thirtyonetwenty, william has gone on to release tracks on rush hour, mobilee, tuskegee and, most notably, tom trago s voyage direct label, as well as delivering remixes for the likes of darius syrossian and anja schneider. omg, william s quirky, colourful debut for strictly features vocals from jazz man camilo and remixes from the original king of new york house, todd terry. the todd terry in house mix is exclusive to the vinyl release.

nicolas bougaïeff presents his new ep on seminal british imprint novamute. as a producer he harbours a diverse musical background, having studied in a conservatoire setting whilst foraying into anti-authoritarian rave culture. he is also a respected lecturer, regularly teaching masterclasses in composition and speaking at global events such as mutek and ableton loop – the results of which come to life in the inquisitive spirit of his productions. cognitive resonance explores elements of acid, gabber and techno through a compositional lens, drawing on the artist’s love for avant-garde forms and long-standing relationship with the electronic music community. the title track lays out long, expansive phrases and warped crescendos to create a disorienting structure, whilst distant harmonies, distorted kick drums and shattering effects merge into a hypnotic form on ‘truthful hyperbole’. lastly, ‘fake news’ mangles our sense of rhythmic familiarity, disrupting the 4/4 beat with a complex metre and sinister melody. listen to the title track here. nicolas will follow this release with an album on his own denkfrabik label, ‘principles of newspeak’ is due out on the 24th of november. this is novamute’s first release since motor (bryan black and oly grasset) over ten years ago. the label, a subsidiary of mute (depeche mode, goldfrapp, new order, liars, erasure, moby), began in 1992 as a response to the growing demand for techno releases in the uk. originally presenting white labels and imports, novamute went on to release records by plastikman, speedy j, juan atkins, luke slater and joey beltram to name a few, as well as forging invaluable links with labels such as tresor and probe, which allowed them to license rare tracks for a wider audience. forthcoming releases on novamute will include eps from terence fixmer and charlotte de witte.

late august will see b.soul music limited release the various artists package thanks 4 nothin , a four-track vinyl only release from the tuscan imprint. marcos baiano s b.soul imprint was launched in 2013 and across its back catalogue has welcomed an array of classic and contemporary talents onto its roster from house legend jovonn through to music for freaks co-founder justin harris and parisian producer terence :terry. here we see the label push on with its second vinyl release set to be released via its ltd offshoot and offered up as a various artist four track package. bosconi soundsystem artist rufus takes the lead on the release with realize dis with classic house tropes, employing a bumpy swinging rhythm as the foundation whilst murky pad swells and spoken word vocals ebb and flow throughout the composition. label-head marcos baiano follows with nullll , stripping things back to shuffled hats and wandering rave stabs before the latter stages introduce a warm ethereal pad. opening up the flip side is retro activity aka ivan iacobucci s rocket edging things into techno territory with weighty drums, mind bending synth flutters and an ever-unfolding, billowing atmosphere. drmc s do not disturb then closes the package on a minimal tip with modulating percussion, minute organic drum shots and airy pad lines laid out over its seven and a half minutes.

fresh from an appearance on balearic blah blah, andi hanley sidles over to fellow mancunian ruf dugs ruf kutz label with some beautiful, sunkissed tones in mind to keep you gliding on the good vibes no matter how grim it may be outside. raffles is a gently pattering piece that seems to hark from the terry riley school of repetition, albeit played through blocky synth tones and delicate refrains. ba nou is a more flamboyant 80s-flavoured cut with some excellent tom fills, slick guitar licks and powerful brass stabs. syn-syn is a melancholic, borderline noirish synth ballad, and kinshasa heads for the dancefloor with its pronounced beat and canned funk sound.

soul jazz records’ new boombox 2 is a new selection of early rap music from the period 1979-83, with barely a household name in sight. featured here are some the earliest hip-hop records that came out of new york city following the enormous commercial success of the first ever rap record, ‘rapper’s delight’ by the sugarhill gang, in september 1979. artists and producers alike tried to jump aboard the new commercial possibilities of hip-hop. by the end of the year there were 30 hip-hop singles, all released by independent new york labels. the following year there were over 100 more, and so on.

starting in 1990 recording for sheffield label ozone records under the name of panic with a release called voices of energy, which was then licensed to buzz in belgium, buzz 001, buzz then went on to release classics by carl craig and derrick may. he set up his own label in the same year solid groove records. the label had 30 vinyl releases over thirteen years and tracks were licensed by derrick may, terry francis, pete tong, adam x, and carl cox.as well as this he ran another four other label s, textures, dark, dot, and cheap knob gags.
