first time reissue of the very first dub lp released in nyc, 1975! part of the genesis of the jah life label! first time reissue of kaya dub from 1975, noted as the first ever proper dub lp pressed and released in new york city. the eponymous lp is among the first set of releases on the kaya label. this imprint was the first to showcase the partnership of percy chin and hyman jah life wright as producers and cornerstones of the burgeoning nyc reggae scene of the day. though these tracks originate from jamaica thru a connection with pat jah lloyd francis and have also been released elsewhere, this is none the less a killer selection of dubs from tubby s and randys. in sound and visuals, kaya dub serves as a fantastic snapshot of the music and vibes of roots reggae in the mid 70s, among the best dub lp s of its time.

reissue of the highly sought after nigerian funk-rock album, moving effortlessly between reggae, jazzy afrobeat and psych rock. soundway fans first got a taste of jay-u’s infectious beats with the track ‘some more’, featured on the soundway compilation “nigeria disco funk special: the sound of the underground lagos dancefloor 1974-79”. originally released by emi nigeria in 1977, this now-rare album was written by jay-u and engineered by disco-boogie artist goddy oku. opening with the up-tempo reggae number “reggae deluxe”, the album descends into mind-blowing jazz-funk featuring several killer saxophone solos. the journey ends with a trip into psych-prog rock, with a sound not dissimilar to that coming out of the early 70s british rock scene.

austin-based musician eliot lipp delivers “skywave”, an album lipp has been working on for the past several months. with influences from sci-fi soundtracks and 70s and 80s funk, he channels a collection of weird, high-definition, melodic beats. in these nine songs lipp feels he “might have everything i want to say in one moment.” recreating key musical moments in a current and relatable way was the goal in producing skywave and giving himself permission to take some risks as well. with a versatile approach, lipp has created opportunities to connect with some of the artists he first looked up to, playing in cities across america and abroad always returning to his hometown in the pacific northwest. collaboration plays a role in all his albums. he’s been a fan of emancipator for a years now and was beyond excited to get his “not quite awake” remix. he asked dmc champ chris karns to scratch on ‘joyride’. in addition to doing cuts, chris ended up playing live drums and layering unique vocal samples. ‘reflection’ came from a jam session with gibbz and cherub in their nashville studio. one of lipp’s biggest musical influences last year came from a group of producers from seattle that call themselves fish tank friends. most of them had a hand in the early stages of ‘spiders’. with monthly trips planned from texas back to washington, he anticipates more evenings surrounded by friends, fans, and new listeners where he brings everyone together through the touch of a button.

same speed sambas are back to celebrate the sound of the summer in 2017 in their very own unique way. following on from last year s now hugely sought after debut, they have dug even deeper, searching out for more obscure uses of brasilian rhythms and coming up with two dance floor delights â&#128,&#147, one from denmark and another from right here in the uk â&#128,&#147, giving them once again, that unique same speed re-touch. samba operator takes a rare live recording of one of the uk s finest soul acts of the 80s biggest hits and re-works it into a mostrous tropical club anthem, while numero dois goes down the samba-not-samba route taking a danish 70s girl band and giving them some very warm disco treatment. the result is something very contemporary sounding that ll fire up the dance every time. all same speed releases are limited, hand-stamped vinyl-only affairs, but also be on the look out for the occasional re-work of more contemporary artists, available for free download as a little treat, to pimp up your dj sets this summer.

the checkerboard squares’ ‘double cookin’’ is a byword for the northern soul all-nighters of the 70s, when hundreds of dancers would hit the beat and clap in unison to the spirited instrumental. our discovery of two vocal versions of the song shook the rare soul world in the noughties. here we feature the tandels’ all-girl take on a song they had previously recorded to a more basic arrangement on the obscure jam-cha label.

two more recent 70s, modern soul-style discoveries were issued last year on the “hotlanta soul 4” kent cd. lorraine johnson verified that the sumptuous vocals on ‘a love like yours’ were indeed hers, though again the author of the song is unknown. deep velvet give a much more harmonious take on ripple’s ‘complain to the clouds’, transforming it from a funk growl into a true soul song.

as noted on another release (see ropin), cornell campbell has enjoyed one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican singer, and he is blessed with a readily identifiable style too. he began his career for clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd in 1956, when rhythm and blues held sway in jamaica, and later cut some ska songs for king edwards. he then passed through the sensations in the rock steady phase and worked as a solo singer at treasure isle, before returning to studio one with the eternals, scoring huge hits such as ‘stars’ and ‘queen of the minstrel’ as the 60s gave way to the 70s. his greatest phase of popularity was them brokered by hit-making producer bunny lee, who kept him on top right through the 1970s and into the 80s. the 1975 album dance in a greenwich farm was first issued on the grounation label in the uk. along with a re-working of ‘stars’ re-titled ‘the sun,’ a re-working of ‘queen of the minstrel’ as ‘girl of my dreams’ and the sound system opus that is the title track, the album has the boastful ‘conquering gorgon’ and a number of keenly-observed cover tunes, including a cut of the gaylads’ ‘no good girl,’ a version of the heptones’ ‘why did you leave me’ and a killer cut of the uniques’ ‘watch this sound’ (based on ‘for what it’s worth’ by buffalo springfield).

some might remember the planty herbs from his earlier 7 inch outing on rnt, and now the dynamic dutchman brings his dusty vibes to a 4-track ep of crafty edit selections. family kicks of the pack with a bouncy funk groove, followed by errybodydisco a low-slung house party affair. on the flip we have the flute solo and sample-heavy soundstream-esque stomper today, while whats inside takes us back to the soul side with a boom-bappity cover of a 70s r&b classic.

the passport to paradise gang are in fine form as they serve up four more tripped-out disco edits for the globally-minded savant. we take sail with the excellent thru wit waitin, a beefed-up guitar chugger reminiscent of 70s aor in its steady percussive work and misty sax solo. it s the guitar line that really shines here, lifting the tune into funk transcendence in the bridge. anybody out there reaches out to the disco trippers with its northern italian cosmic kitsch feel: starry-eyed synth pads float above reverb-soaked guitar musings and playful french vocal samples. a particular highlight. on the flip, ptp take things south with a soulful west african shuffler guaranteed to elicit some arresting footwork. the ep leaves us with resounding vibrations from the far east: jp wave explores ethereal planes, building up a dense rhythmic fabric punctuated by bass stabs and ornamental chimes. this is a clever bunch of edits for the more discerning selectors and enthusiasts out there- act fast.

for the fifth instance in their reissue series, echovolt records brings us four lush house gems by one of the most influential italian producers. carlo troja aka don carlos. don carlos started as a dj in the late 70s and debuted as a producer towards the end of the 80s with the cult single alone , which pretty soon became one of the anthems of the international deep house scene. inspiration ep focuses on some of his finest productions from the mid 90s that were only available on his rare aqua vinyl promo ep. this releases makes an effort to capture don carlos unique approach on classic house with lot of afro-american jazz sounds and ambient influences, that created a timeless deep jazzy house with a strong mediterranean twist on it!

brian ellis known for his collaborations with legends egyptian lover, howard johnson also the modern funk contemporaries like zackey force funk and xl middleton, “mirror/mirror” showcases brian’s handling of all instruments, vocals, mixing and production. drawing from classic 70s west coast aor to obscure french library music and early 80s funk presenting a timeless contemporary sound. combining analog synths (oberheim ob8, minimoog model d, yamaha dx7, and more), live guitar, intricate drumming, smooth vocals with excellent songwriting have come together like never before. sure to be a classic record in the years to come.

rich la bonte is a musician, writer and editor from upstate new york born in 1946. at age 11 he figured out how to record a piano backwards with his first tape deck and discovered monk, mingus and art blakey. in 1965 rich moved to ithaca, bought an electric guitar and started singing in garage rock band the huns. after the band dissolved, he moved to nyc and played bass and sang in the original cast production of the musical godspell. in the late 70s la bonte moved to hollywood with shari famous, released a a few 7” singles as dada2, and started flatdisk records, a vinyl subsidiary of dave gibson s moxie record company.

a-side discomix, one of the rarest and best wackie s 12inches, b-side previously unreleased wicked 70s roots! killer vintage bullwackies! the happy love song was originally released on a tribesman 12inch, one of the least known but most killer wackies 12inches of its day. a propulsive rhythm is behind the group licking back the tune cut by the iq s in jamaica a couple years earlier. the b-side was retrieved from tape, an unknown vocalist extolling the virtues of the roots rock reggae coming from wackie s studio in the turbulent new york city of the 1970s. a must have for all wackie s diehards, another level of the pyramid unearthed, and more to come!
