italian rudeboy ivan iacobucci brings his brand of lowdown funk-influenced tech house to apollonia with this sterling three-tracker. over two decades of hard work and dedication to his craft has culminated in ivan’s untainted reputation and widespread respect within the underground from true heads like zip and, of course, the apollonia boys. his love of jazz in evident throughout this ep which is full of subtlety and depth, pulsating b-lines and smooth chords are interlaced with razor-sharp percussion and delicate keys. the first track ‘old in on’ has a laid back, though driving, groove, pushing forward with a hefty bassline that is perfectly counterbalanced by the light twinkling keys and barely-there pads. ‘scris frumos’ encapsulates more of an ominous, tribal feeling with intricate effects trickling through every pore of its deep, dark exterior. its atmospherics keep you intrigued, voices echo in the background and a few moments of softened chimes really intensify the already mysterious vibe. ‘mini ass’ channels more of that electro-funk that forms the foundation of ivan’s love for music, haywire radio pulses prance around stuttered beats, giving it a slightly cosmic feel, while pipes add a more organic nuance to the track. absolutely masterful work from ivan, and another inspired addition to the apollonia catalogue.

roman poncet returns to figure with another batch of deadly efficient tools featuring four productions in his stripped-back signature style. opener vicious sets the stage with a snappy and muscular breakbeat holding the rhythm down tightly until creeping synths reveal the track’s true, eery intentions. marguerite is more welcoming, with gentle percussion and dubbed out chords making for a loop that could go on forever. the b-side is another example of skillfully sculpting sounds both lean and powerful. on atome i ricocheting synth echoes and fine layers of percussion sway back and forth until they collapse into an extended atmospheric breakdown. starting out reduced to its very nucleus, the second version slowly lets an electrifying tension fill the blank spaces. comprising a set of bare-bone grooves as slick as they are powerfully moving, roman poncet delivers another ep in true figure fashion that is sure to stay in the bag for a long time.

six years after his mila ep, uk techno artist lee renance, better known as 100hz with james chapman, is finally back on bosconi with another strong 3 tracker release called -circles-, a combination of very sought-after gems and reworks of old tunes: the record begins with the gentleness of the groovy and jazzy vibe of that mega rare undergound deep anthem named -shoot the bar-, a track originally out in 1998 on pacific records which many people have been probably waiting since long time for a repress, while on b side the artist presents himself under one of his more obscure aliases as mr format, going trough more voodooish and hypnotic dub techno territories with a pitched down version of primary colours track, an undiscovered and carefully crafted secret weapon previously released on his own imprint format records. last cut of the record is a totally renovated version of the track oliva out in 2009 on the greatest french logistic records. in this new version , “oliva funk” epic strings and pads merge with compelling and engaging beats creating a levitating effect which drive the mind and the mood of the dancefloor into dreamy soundscapes. you ll make it yours.

phoenix g s latest output is another mr.g effort with great versatility. showcasing the original g sound throughout the whole ep, the g man comes up with funky bassline samples, analog string action and the signature vocal cuts that have elevated most of his records in some way. pg055s comes in a special full colour sleeve with an iconic picture of the g himself. licensed from and thanks to rekids.

after the debut release on do not sleep become a sure fire club hit, the ibiza party turned much loved house and tech label now has another weapon up its sleeve. the next release is from perel, is titled charles manson and features another standout remix from resident darius syrossian. perel is a berlin based dj, producer and vocalist who is quickly rising through the ranks. she has released both originals and remixes on o*rs before now, and has a robust house and techno infused sound that simply makes you want to dance. as a dj she is a regular at cool spots like farbfernseher and impresses here with what she serves up for do not sleep. the original is a chunky, no-nonsense house track with bouncy bass, subtle vocals and the sort of futuristic and soulful pads that help make it really stand out. it s a slick, well produced sound that is sure to make it into many top record bags in the coming weeks and months. the remix from darius is a subtle one that layers in some trance inducing vocals and extra breakdowns so as to really highlight the powerful effect of the drums each and every time they drop.

way back in 1996, at the height of the widely acknowledged golden period for electronic music, d-saw a.k.a andré winter released a true classic on hamburgs highly influential superstition label. track 10:30 stood the test of time, becoming widely regarded as a key moment in european techno music history, despite its modest impact at the time. now, 20 years later, andré revisits the source material courtesy of some killer remixes on oliver huntemanns senso imprint. hamburg’s own h.o.s.h. (holger behn) delivers an epic twist to the cut, widening out the spaces and adding his own techy signature to the original. re.you offer up another flavour altogether, maintaining the iconic synth pulse of the source but introducing an infectious, driving groove. dubspeeka throw a bit more grit in into proceedings with a tough, machine funk mix, while andre winter himself reworks his classic into a slow burning groover that effortlessly showcases the elements that make this track so timeless.

smeur continues it’s journey into melodic trippy house. the third release features two artists take on a track from the same starting point. both sides are based on the same set of samples. but while side a reminisces early orbital in its theme side b is a somber excursion into another subterranean world. both tracks will keep the floor interested with it’s different approach to house music.

chupacabras and brother y join forces to form the debut vinyl release from tutamen. brooklyn resident and elusive production talent chupacabras offers up two machine-powered cosmic cuts, expanding upon the territory explored with his contributions to the tutamen tape series and last years ep for go finger. the as-yet unknown brother y makes a first appearance with two hypnotic numbers on the b-side.

the package inaugurates with oslo’s prins thomas editing tromsø legend mental overdrive ‘hellbent’ for a decadent cut featuring sinister drones and dusky atmospherics. urhaug, also known under his house alias tobii, demonstrates tantalising melodies and a chugging bassline in ‘7.3’ before ploink veteran nordenstam takes things into a rhythmic direction in ‘haustfargar’ using shuffling percussion, bouncy toms and spectral synths. christian tilt, another core ploink member, then drops the mesmerising ‘ord’ boasting industrial stabs, a throbbing low-end and cosmic effects. tying it all together, fresh bergen talent hutmacher concludes the release with a cacophony of grooves, samples and echoes in an arcane number named ‘dobbelgänger’.

berlin experimental techno duo these hidden hands recently teamed up with lucrecia dalt for a 12&#8243,, on hidden hundred, these moments dismantled. the abstract sonic terrain plotted in the eponymous first track finds its logical conclusion on the b-side, where tension and release oscillate in a harrowing groove. the artwork, created by jesse draxler, adds another layer of apocalypticism to the package. heard on “melancholia” are interpretations of honzo’s subconscious visions of life. the intense compositions are made up of drones, noises and distorted beats moving in and out of the frame. on opener “orientalism” said elements blend with hi-hat brushes, brassy synth pads, sci-fi noises and distant human voices evoking islam’s “adhan” (call to prayer). the theme contemplates over alienation caused by western accounts of “orientalism”, soaked in “hüzün” (the turkish term for melancholia). on a2 a rework of “moral masochism” is provided by the mysterious shadows outfit, starting with a distorted guitar over a slow and gritty rhythmic backbone which gradually turns into a chaotic high-intensity acid jam on the ep’s most dance floor suitable cut. on the flipside, “lovesickness” presents a broken kick rhythm periodically flipped by toms and accompanied by a disorienting hi-hat rhythm, ghostly strings and sporadic human moans – all resulting in a tribal mood, recalling a ceremony, perhaps a quest for a saviour from the blue temper? b2 presents the “moral masochism” original. again a distorted guitar plays over a slow rhythm, but compared to the remix, the original’s intensity is introverted, contemplating over melancholia’s effect of deriving gratification from self-inflicted moral humiliation. ambient closer “emptiness” explores a cold state with such an encapsulating airiness that it feels like a close account of another person’s mood down to the impression of their breath. arpeggiated synth noises appear from a distance representing increasing pressure from the outside world without ever suppressing the state of mind. as a result, “emptiness” sums up the state of melancholia experienced as a mood rather than the effect of a cause.

soooo here we are with the tenth and final release, thought it would be nice to finish on a nice zen like number, so this is a extra special release kind of a mini lp almost -opened up by fx mchn flush the trush is an intro to the comp and a reverse funk skittish affair next up is new man on the block for us here we been sitting on a collection of his tracks but felt this one complemented this ep the most, ecco foul, gloss is a sleazy machine groove that does t do much but thats just the way we like it .then comes mr facade with his jerky funk sweet surprises and warm melodies. the b side is opened by another newcomer from running back record hugh mane new age dawns whose track come s deep and wide open has to be heard on the headphones as well as the club jamie blanco s chord arrangments get opened up and spaced out by lht office boy toby tobias in a detroitesque ditty thats been used to open a few sets in 2015 already and finally alphonse delivers an out and out machine jam with the usual dub influence brought in vocal fashion.

another journey to the deepest shades of house music with the fourth neroli ep from trinidadian deep. if you followed his previous successful outputs on neroli you know what to expect: organic, deep, spiritual beats and melodies.

ian blevins is the keeper of the jewel in the crown. this is his second offering for the esp institute. picking up right where we left off, side a unleashes another explosive big room belter with resume a driving rhythmic monster that takes advantage of the whips and cracks in ian’s drum machine arsenal, while warm chords lay a foundation for a quirky lead melody and rubbery pulse to dance upon. akin to hannibal, blevins esp institute debut in 2015, the arrangement here toys with us before revealing the true guts of the track—this time characterized halfway through by a punctuating gangster piano hook. on side b, poor old head utilizes ian’s signature drum styling we’ve come to adore, but here he establishes swells of melancholy via bending notes that meow and purr, beautifully ebbing and flowing though an array of incongruous dial tones and bells—shakey and barely out of sync, yet cradling a loosely drawn chord progression. these two songs will smack you up before they rub you down.

having previously used their dnuos ytivil offshoot to release material from their nearest and dearest (think batu, bruce, hodge and alex coulton), bristol’s livity sound crew turns to unknown french producer simo cell. the two tracks showcased here are a rather fine introduction to this newcomer, with opener “piste jaune” offering a clandestine blend of stuttering electro bass, discordant analogue percussion hits and spooky electronics. the mystery man goes for the jugular on “cellar door”, with pitched-down, bleep style melodies and liquid electronics riding an off-kilter, broken techno groove. another fine livity release.

love notes from brooklyn is proud to present a brand new and promising young american artist in the form of tape hiss. these three moody and emotive tracks fit in perfectly with the label sound love notes has been developing over their last few release. the panic in needle park, the clear standout track, begins the ep with gloomy synth washes at a chugging, pitched down speed. that track is then ably reworked by fellow brooklynite, willie burns, of lies and wt records, who breaks the beat up for a stunted and unique reinterpretation. on the flip, love is a dog from hell brings a little acid to the proceedings, and traces to nowhere closes it out on consitantly dark and moody note. literates will note the bukowski references throughout. another winner for this label

bad taste recordings hit 2016 in severe kinetic style with a fresh pair of tracks launching the identity of malux, the new neurofunk-focussed moniker of established bass producer skope (inspected). with turbine and fonk the agenda is clear – energetic, funk-fuelled dnb driven by detailed low-frequency design and a boisterous rave vibe.
turbine carries with it a stripped aesthetic, with a percussive pattern driven by the snare and wonky plucked synth work. this is heads-down, bassface material for ravers to get into step to.
fonk on the flip hits a cheeky upbeat tone, switching slickly between bass textures punctuated by staccato sonic fragments.
with support from scene titans such as andy c, the upbeats and radio play from friction on bbc r1 and crissy criss on kiss fm, malux has immediately caught the attention of those who know. bad taste hits the nail on the head again, introducing another name with a big destiny into the halls of dnb.

repress . dungeon meat are back after 2 well received ep s from point g and mr g with some serious claw to the floor club weapons. welcoming another new addition to their brigade of beat butchers, it s the dutch producer and dj known as larry de kat who drops a fine feline selection for his purrr-versions ep. four killer tracks which showcase his diversity and perversity in the studio. theres no doubt that this selection will do the damage on the dance floor and bring even more attention to this undeniable talent.

parallax 03 - this upcoming release on parallax features two fresh cuts by yogg on the b-side, and the first taste from his new collaboration with another tel-aviv based producer -pharaoh. 460 is a 10 minute run of subtle deep atmospheres and flucuating dub sequences. for now shows yoggs more violent techno style with its accentuated offbeats & industrial leaning patterns. oo-oo brings this one to closure on a quite but powerful note, with a more lush texture and subtle serial sequencing.
