when umek introduced his moniker zeta reticula at the beginning of the century, he got the following review: “zeta reticula sounds something like a cross between basic channel style minimalism & anthony rothers electro formulas” here the main man does it once again, unleashing four pulsating electro workouts, with more than a little nod to aux 88.

as 2016 rolls through, so does fossil archive with its 4th release since its highly acclaimed beginnings in february 2015. with fossil archive’s previous release featuring as “tune of the month” on mixmag’s november 2015 techno page, this next two-part ensemble sees two very different tracks leave you with little doubt that fossil archive remains inspired to be at the forefront of all things techno.

through shards of frozen soundscapes, boss006 defrosts the stockholm sound with the bm debut of kalawila, whose ample use of sparse building techniques creates a rigid and tight groove structure. this subtle attitude fueled two tracker is what s up in 2016, especially in the bossmusik hometown of stockholm: the extended aside grasps intelligence while swiftly pushing forward. as for the flipside, this intergalactic adventure shares tight resemblance to the mystery unknown atmosphere of bossmusik s sonic universe, and sums up this little bomb in a clever and rewarding way... watch out!

the mysterious but widely acclaimed r-zone series roll on to a 15th ep now with a new four track release that is as essential as ever. opener hired gun is a tough and raw concoction with coarse, snappy snares, rough drum pings and lots of abrasive texture all making for a physical listening experience. midwinter is a deeper and more emotive jam with warm pads dampening down icy hi hats and busy synth work. it is fresh and original and sounds like little else, then captive gets all deep and space-y with smeared pads and slick metallic hits tied together with a molten acid line. lastly, exile is five blissful and beautiful minutes of atmospheric, intergalactic electronic sounds that really take you to another place

early support from raresh, akufen, and jan krueger, next up on sol asylum is non other than julie marghilano with her innerspace ep. taking the listener to another dimension of sound, she brings her range of musical knowledge to create a solid package with a stunning remix from fred p. starting things off on a analog journey with “innerspace” we move through an interstellar universe with detailed grooves full of percussive splatters and echoing synths that moves us into a dream like state of mind. conjuring the jazz planet in berlin with“katzbachjazz”you are immediately transported to a galaxy of sound with galloping percussion and a classic techno layout. using more 909 techno drum elements she creates a whirlwind of sound with a delicate touch. taking things a little bit deeper with “cosmic karma” she presents a heavily detailed drum structure full of violin experimentation that creates a dark atmosphere but still bringing an uplifting and joyous vibe. finishing off the package is something unique from fred p who julie asked to remix for her due to her enormous respect for him. the emotionally charged remix of“cosmic karma” shows a different side of fred p while still keeping his signature sound in tact. the remix takes us through an ever-evolving voyage through time and space.

as per usual, jwb presents an ep of high quality. this time with the helping hand of t. ruggieri. one can appreciate the grand scale of sounds inside a very deep atmosphere. two great remixes as pablo inzunza (little helpers / highgrade) and gus & bonso (wrong state) tops such a fantastic release.

the first spinning plates ep back in february was picked up by print media and radio tastemakers from ra and dj mag to b.traits and moxie, whilst djs as diverse as ivan smagghe and francois k slotted it into their dj bags. as such there has been much demand for a second release, and now it arrives in the form of a fascinating split ep from scene veteran andy rantzen and relative newcomer bruno schmidt, who helps a&r for the label. in fact it was bruno who came across andy’s tracks during a late night youtube session. andy, who remixed inxs and severed heads back in the day and is a sydney based producer who has been active for three decades, had upped a load of his old demos to youtube in the faint hope that one day someone might find them. and damn are we happy he did, because they are brilliant affairs that sound like little else. for his part, bruno has been a louche resident and hifi creator alongside andrew james gustav and gwenan and delivers an exceptional stripped down late night trip/early morning trip.

while being a rare patrick adams and billy nichols production, mary clark’s “take me i’m yours” has in recent years become one of the most celebrated disco tracks by contemporary deejays. this borderline gospel-disco gem has all the elements of a timeless disco cut, a driving bass line, powefully arranged strings and horns, but most importantly, a very soulful performance by mary clark. like many of peter brown’s “affliate” labels, little is known about them or the artists recorded. originaly released in 1980 on ‘la shawn’, it is rumored to have been no more than 200 records originally pressed, making this one of the most sought 12 inches among collectors.

a new long-form offering of poignant, isolationist machine music from secret boyfriend. eschewing the cryptic and compact song-sketches that characterised his 2013 blackest ever black lp, this is always where you’ve lived, ryan martin instead guides us through vast interior topographies and nerve-damaged ambiences that comfort and deceive like memory itself. the vinyl release includes a download code.

our little dirt crew sub label spiel started out in late 2013 with three excellent releases, the first two by clancy featuring remixes by urulu and prins thomas followed by a stellar ep from mercury. after a hiatus spiel is back for 2016.

decisions is proud to announce its second release: empty gallery ep by waterhouse, a melbourne based producer, dj and vocalist. the ep spans 3 years of waterhouse productions (2013-2015), charting a sonic emergence suffused with spatial, textural and emotional complexity. the ep opens with ‘breathless’, a heady rush of ambience, shimmering cymbals and field recorded textures. ‘a little sheep’ follows, progressively immersing the listener in accumulating layers of vocal melodies. on ‘3415’ rapturous choral textures encircle delayed claps and a reverb-drenched kick drum to form the most urgently rhythmic cut on the record. side a ends with title track ‘empty gallery’, in which an intricate constellation of strings, pads, rumbling sub frequencies and brusquely dry percussion meet lyrics confronting life after loss.

taking a brief detour from his normal abrasive distorted sound, pinion showcases his broad spectrum as an artist with the desire ep. the title track, desire (half measure),starts out of the gate with a thunderous half beat 808 coupled with a swinging hihat pattern that slowly works ethereal vocal slices into the forefront, accompanied with a modulating synth pad that evolves into a defining melody. the sister track, desire (full measure), has very similar characteristics as the original, but allowing a little more edge for the dancefloor to build on. the third original track, recollection shifts gears quite drastically with a 135 bpm stormer with enough soul and melody to make the uncharacteristically fast tempo seem inconsequential. last, comes kyle geiger on remix duties to round out the ep with a housier take on desire, but still enough bite to fit nicely into any techno set.

needing very little introduction here is soulful scotsman al kent, who delivers the dirty goods for his first outing on rnt. good inside and 4006 are a pair of dusty reworks, as gritty and groovy as you like. but the prize of this ep might just be come back home, the crown jewel of his decade-earlier secret sounds collection, finally getting a proper vinyl for the first time ever!

the album is a soundtrack of music inspired by the movie rubble kings and is out globally via mass appeal records. produced by longtime run the jewels collaborator little shalimar, the album features appearances from bun b, ghostface killah, killer mike, tunde adebimpe, mr muthaf*kin exquire, boldy james, cuz lightyear, ka and roxiny, in addition to run the jewels. scoring the film was the first time little shalimar set out to make period music. half of the music on this album was taken directly from the score and is heavily indebted to ‘60s and ‘70s soul and funk music. for the new tunes shalimar sampled joints from the score and created new beats out of them.
the grey marbled double lp version comes in a gatefold sleeve and includes an iron-on patch of the rubble kings plus a download code for the rubble kings album and documentary.

caldera‘s *journey* reveals something unexpected through its driving beat, as shuffling rhythms scuttle around the uncompromisingly tough kick drum, only to be interrupted by organic sample constructions. *valuable* doesn‘t hide behind the opener: pitched-down vocal samples develop through foggy walls of delay. underneath it all, a churning beat grows, captivating the listener. it drifts slowly, always a little behind and stretching endlessly.

the second offering from no more to roam, comes from one half of 2deepsoul, rai scott. a 3 track ep of low slung, sultry beats. clarinet moods, the eps namesake, comes in two different cuts both with the clarinet skills of rai herself, the melody mix is real nod to the afterhours, subtle drums & a haunting clarinet lick, while the lazy dub a little more upbeat, still has that afterhours vibe, carried with the clarinet & simple percussions, closing things up here is move to the front built for the dancefloor, a rolling bassline & synth, layered over a rolling percussion makes up the final cut.

the last couple of years have been huge for pomo, going from a relatively obscure canadian producer to releasing his debut ep on hw&w, remixing for the likes of janet jackson and mark ronson, and touring the globe with disclosure as their hand-picked opening act.
bastard jazz has commissioned pomo to be next in line for the fourth volume of their *tempo dreams* compilation albums, following on the heels of the hotly contested soul clap compiled vol. 3. as with other tempo dreams records, we tease it out with a limited 7 inch release with tracks from the compiler made specifically for the tempo dreams album.

love notes from brooklyn is proud to present a brand new and promising young american artist in the form of tape hiss. these three moody and emotive tracks fit in perfectly with the label sound love notes has been developing over their last few release. the panic in needle park, the clear standout track, begins the ep with gloomy synth washes at a chugging, pitched down speed. that track is then ably reworked by fellow brooklynite, willie burns, of lies and wt records, who breaks the beat up for a stunted and unique reinterpretation. on the flip, love is a dog from hell brings a little acid to the proceedings, and traces to nowhere closes it out on consitantly dark and moody note. literates will note the bukowski references throughout. another winner for this label

repress !! having wowed critics and crate-diggers alike with 2012s acclaimed magik cyrkles compilation, psychemagik are now ready to unleash the follow-up, magik sunrise. bristling with psychedelic, cosmic and curiously balearic oddities hand-picked from the depths of their vast record collections, magik sunrise is, if anything, even more inspired that its predecessor.

rushmore is a 1998 soundtrack to the wes anderson film of the same name. the songs mostly blend raw, adolescent urges and insecurity with an awkward grace, composed primarily of popular music from the 1960s. continuing with its soundtrack initiative, ume will be reissuing this classic soundtrack back on vinyl for the first time in years.
the 1998 wes anderson film, rushmore, starred bill murray, jason schwartzman, olivia williams, seymour cassel, and luke wilson. the soundtrack was scored by mark mothersbaugh and also features music by the kinks, cat stevens, the who, john lennon, zoot sims, faces, and more.

planet rhythm latest vinyl contribution comes by rennes based producer berg jaär. berg comes as a true addition to the ever growing prruk reportoire. firm drums and sturdy fx serve as the backbone of his contribution. with little info to be found about the french producer this release serves as the perfect example of the adventurous mode that planet rhythm currently finds itself in. moody yet intrusive in many ways.

*sagan om lilla vargen* is a musical drama created by the quartet wobz. its a tale of the little wolf who is forced to move out of the woods as it is about to get renovated. the journey to the city makes for an adventure in sounds as the citys noise and stress gets intensified with lifestyle coaches and different obstacles of human interests. the members of wobz are active in the sound art and electronica genre. the vinyl release comes in a gatefold sleeve with cd and download code.

as the d edge label clocks up release number 24, it turns to the phil hinter ensemble for a fantastic three track package that is filled with fresh house vibes. phil hinter ensemble is a joint project by phil s main pillars philogresz and german simon hinter. they have ties with labels like their own phil, love unlimited vibes and of course d-edge. previous eps have gone down well around the world and simon hinter s smart grooves and sample based fill-ins blends with the wombastic bass and shivering synth lines of philogresz perfectly. up first is the owl, a squelchy, synthetic house track with lively drums and chords and magical trumpets all making for a party starting track. it is perfectly arranged and expertly musical, unlike much of today s plastic and sample heavy sounds. in the air then gets even more playful with glossy synth stabs, rumbling bass and diva vocals all bouncing along in a charismatic style that is full of colour. struggle then gets intimate and final with scurrying little percussive sounds, burst of afro vocal, down low sine waves and icy snares all making for a perfectly seductive minimal techno brew

the bush is a homage to the place where i have lived for the last decade (askew road). the askew road itself is slowly changing so i wanted to document all the places that play a big part in mine and my families lives before they eventually get sold for more flats or tescos. 002 was all about the mighty sun pub which has now been sold and transformed into a costa coffee and an estate agents. next up is our local park which hopefully will never see change as its been our little slice of heaven in w12 since we moved here.

van bonn presents on his new ep pluto dedicated techno music with a dubby edge. every tune of the ep points and reflects a different situation of the night. the eponymous opener pluto delivers a powerful groove full of drive, massive chords and sirens to thrill the air. twisted elements spice the dubby elements that melt into a massive break. 2650 pleases with a forward driving groove and modulated chord stabs. the massive bass goes hand in hand with the overall positive vibe created by subtle shifts of the harmony to round off an evolving tune that points on the dancefloor. the two heroes brendon moeller and eric cloutier remixed van bonn s original mixes. it needs to be said that it is amazing to welcome these two artists on this ep with their fantastic reshapes. brendon moeller remixed pluto and presents a stripped down, groovy and dubby affair that fathoms the wideness and depths of the original mix. brendon moeller s remix proves again that less is sometimes more. techno dub at its best. eric cloutier s remix of 2650 rounds off the ep with a gentle and deep driving dub house vibe. it is presented in the stripped down eric cloutier sound . full of details and little changes does eric cloutier s remix tickle your eardrum that makes you long for the next neverending open air session. but don t forget to go home.

sublime and slinky four tracker from james dexter on dessous recordings, steve bugs label for the deeper side of house. the young brit shows his mastery of the form with an ep that combines effortlessly club-ready grooves with exceptional sound design and a strong melodic sensibility. dexter clearly know a thing or two about creating dance floor moments, with each track exhibiting a classiness that belies his age. have it like that kicks things off with a chugging, hypnotic feel and crisp drums providing the basis for a cool vocal hook and thick, warm bass. no time gets a shade deeper and no less funky, while get to this points a little further towards the center of the dance floor. closing track 120 goes even further into the late night vibes with a seriously infectious groove.

there are also more frosty cuts that sound like a chilly autumn walk, tracks that feature emotive neo-classical piano pieces and suggestively rhythmic compositions that sooth your mind. the second half of the record touches on church like passages of synth heavy sounds, strikingly sad violins and lo-fi arrangements that sound, one hopes, a little like what you might hear as you pass from this life to the next.

nyc s cosmic-disco-funk superheroes go head to head on this 12inch release. this is the first vinyl release from king mono (featuring little shalimar from run the jewels and jesse boykins iii) and the 3rd single from sunrise hwy (featuring amy douglas (juan maclean, kon, eli escobar etc)) after ten snake s true romance label released their first ep s last year.

releasing an album is a daunting task, especially in dance music. you got to keep it fresh and exciting from the very beginning until the last track, not sticking to one tempo, make tracks that work both at home and in the club and ultimately tell a story with your music. alexander lay-far knows a thing or two about this, having his debut album so many ways out back in 2013. the thing with lay-far and a big reason why we ve always had a soft spot for him is his way of incorporating a certain magic in the tracks that leaves you on an uplifting and optimistic note. therefore we re really excited to release his second album, how i communicate, on local talk. how i communicate is a two part vinyl release which we hope will come as a fresh breeze in these days where so much dance music simply lacks the actual musical aspect or the organic approach. like most producers and djs that are influenced by soul, disco, jazz and the blacker side of electronic dance music its all about the actual tune . listening (or dancing) through this album we hope you ll find your special tune (or tunes!) that hopefully will bring joy to your ears. to his aid lay-far has invited an impressive cast of collaborators such as ashley beedle & darren morris, restless soul, sean mccabe & mark de clive-lowe to give the tracks that little extra something under the watchful eye of lay-far himself. or as lay-far describes it himself the album is about the music as the universal language, the ultimate means of communication, bringing people of the world together. part 2 will be released in the new year...

coeo are to toy tonics records, what master at work were to the house scene of the 1990ies: they bring the soul into the house. their new ep back in the days is a 4 track house stomper that could have been made in 1997 by guys like sneak, dimitri from paris or little louie. but still the similarities to the new berlin sample-house scene around max graef and hodini are evident, too. already their last years superhit native riddim (which is featured as a bonus track on this vinyl) included some heavy jazz samples they found in their parents bag of soul. native riddim has been no.1 in the traxsource charts for several weeks and was the basis for their already huge following. from laurent garnier to tensnake - the feedback has been awesome. now they proceed their way of souldful house. just good taste.

jakob häglsperger aka kalipo is a busy man. operating as one third of german electro-punk band frittenbude, his solo alias was brought to life in 2014 with debut album yaruto, released on experimental label antime records. the multi-faceted producer now returns to audiolith with the wanderer ep, after having released the gorgeous mäusemarsch this summer on the label’s electronic-focused stiff little spinners compilation series. the vinyl lp includes a download code.
