victor calderone has stepped up for his first solo release on drumcode with his two track single, burden. featuring two energetic tracks, *skin* and *burden*, victor has used effected vocals to create funky rhythms over the top of some steaming kick drums. the synth stabs lend themselves well across this ep particularly in *burden* where they really augment the flow of the track. the use of percussion phrases throughout both tracks on the single also reinforces the grooves and adds character to create a distinctive sound that keeps the single fresh and exciting.

while it may seem as though it has been a quiet year in the studio for brooklyn-based dj/producer greg schappert (aka donor), his first full-length album entitled against all on chicago-based prosthetic pressings, will prove otherwise.

milton wrights perfect deep soul classic *keep it up* has always been a top shelf record, everything about it is almost flawless! whether it is miltons silky vocal delivery, the incessant guitar driven back beat or the total space funk vibe of his omnipresent arp-2600 synthesizer this record has it all. originally released on tk discos more soul and funk orientated alston label which was home to many legendary artists and records, this 1975 sunshine classic never fails to make people move. a classic rare groove indeed. *the silence that you keep* takes up side-b, a jazzy, flute driven love song that again features milton s perfect voice and some fantastic arrangement. a real gem of a record, with the original 45 changing hands for over £100 a time in used condition. this is the first time *keep it up* has been re-issued in its original 45 rpm format with the original alston label artwork. it has been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of tk disco / alston records, miami florida, usa.

for the 8th instalment of to rack & ruin we see the long awaited return of neil diablo this time dropping the evil k neil moniker from used for the first 2 volumes of the edits series. first up on foreva neil skilfully chops up a little known raw 122bpm proto-house disco jam which has sumptuous boogie bassline, choppy stabs and a wonderful soulful female vocal extended and edited for dance floor delight. on the flip is love ma gin. a glittery disco affair with a heavy bassline and glamorous strings which builds and builds. early dj support come from crazy p, pete herbert and emperor machine.

sometimes it takes a little longer until things happen. talking the conjunctional studio joint of martin landsky and marco resmann entitled lava, now released under their collaborational project landsky & resmann, this single is one that has been overdue for quite a while and for a reason. a reason and shared history that essentially helped to shape and add momentum to marco resmanns career at an early stage a good 13 years ago when he wasnt even known under his real name but used the artistic alias phage dj- and production-wise.

mystery production unit dj bmx continue their thrilling, no-nonsense adventures in the underground with the conquest of gravity ep for mil. techno-fused roller -warrior within- gets matters underway as thumping bass and ticking hi hats form the fore of the track, marching along over off-kilter bleeps and succinct glitches. the rough n ready aesthetic of the track sets the tone excellently for the ep, leading coherently into -wonders of time- where slight changes and improvisations keep your attention, with dubbed out key jabs that are matched melodically against atmospheric synth pads whirling in and out over crisp percussion clicks. -spinning across the sky- maintains the inspiration for myriad sources, cosmic, dreamy chimes are sprinkled over a tentatively used piano sequence, distorted key kicks and muddied percussion. its the only moment on the ep to include a vocal, and its used beautifully as it floats around the tracks central structure, lending it a spacious and depth-charged feel. -radim world- finishes everything off with a touch of pepe bradock style elegance - the multi-layered arrangements are fluid and dynamic, resulting in well-executed deep house.

so the story goes: a few years ago i played a cool underground party in stockholm with my good friend and crazy record collector mark seven. early on that night mark played me this beautiful and melancholic piece of music. mark happily handed me his spare copy and my record collection for a second felt a little more complete… originally released as a b-side track to als slipshod ep on out of the loop the track continued to mesmerize whenever i played it and the fact that so many people loved it and equally as many didn’t know the record i though a re-release could be a great idea. it’s inclusion on gerd janson’s recent sonar kollektiv compilation and the fact that it’s been played by legendary dj harvey ( o bearded one as he’s known to by the initiated)has obviously helped to spread it’s fame to. now hopefully showing it’s full potential we bring you the remastered “lullaby for robert” with a whole bunch of remixes made with love by remixers spellbounded by it’s magic. on part 1 we bring you : the original + bogdan irkük remix part 2 will include reworks by mark seven, gatto fritto and yours truly toot toot beep beep,

few if any producers have managed to make the transition between hip-hop and house as successfully as vincent williams, a.k.a. dj spinna. but until now his hip-hop career has been better documented. here, for the first time, is a collection of the cream of spinna’s house remixes, a collection likely to win a place in the homes of anyone who loves their house music with a deep and soulful twist.

at the tail end of the 90s, gregory darsa played around with a number of pseudonyms before finally settling on his now familiar dj gregory alias. one of those abandoned aliases was headcore. it was used for a single ep back in 1998, released on chateau flight s label, versatile (then in it s infancy). here, that ep gets a welcome reissue. it s aged rather well, with all four tracks - explorations of deep house themes with occasional nods to the dubby, african-influenced style darsa would later explore on the africanism project - sounding as fresh now as they did 16 years ago. picking highlights is tricky, but we re particularly enjoyed the sparse, swinging dub-house of -cage- (accompanied with a tasty drum dub) and the chez damier-influenced chug of -in & out

inspired by a journey of a man, who is not afraid to leave everything behind and travel far beyond the stars, vakula sets off for the exploration on new sound magnitudes. written by david lindsay in 1920, a story of a fearless traveler who is exposed to sublime energies and unknown spheres concurs with vakulas perception of reality and his personal voyage to unknown dimensions. claimed to be a soundtrack to a voyage to arcturus, the album is an attempt to expend beyond conventions of the modern house music and dedication to daring ventures.

before dj gregory was point g. point g is an alias used by the french produced to explore a gritty, raw sound steeped in abstract vibes but with a very basic approach, which makes it all the more captivating making a strong impact on the underground scene in the 90s, point g gained much respect amongst his peers with timeless releases like the raw ep, on the raw again ep…. originals vinyl copies of many of point gs early tracks are notoriously hard to find, giving this comeback even more kudos.

*jingo* is an all-time classic dance record, sampled, edited, re-configured and coveted by too many names to mention! it’s a killer funky disco version of master nigerian drummer olatunjis 1969 percussion suite of the same name, salsoul style, while over on the flip we have one of the deepest disco records of all time, *thousand finger man* a testament to candidos percussion prowess and a spacey, beautiful voyage that has left more than an indelible mark on modern house music, often being cited as a huge influence by artists such as masters at work and more. essential stuff basically, every collection should have a copy! this 12 inch has got to be one of the toughest salsoul records to find. changing hands for up to £300 a time for a used copy. now it has been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with all original label artwork intact with the permission of salsoul records, new york city.

frederick is the alias of a dj and producer known for releases on labels like local talk and soundofspeed. emotive, cinematic, epic and space are some of the words used to describe his approach to deep house music production and also in his versatile dj sets.

albert van abbe has truly gained momentum this year with his new self-titled label vanabbe, a successful berghain live debut as well as releases on shipwrec and now trolldans. and you can tell! this trolldans release is filled with confidence and lucidity. the term ostinato refers to a continuously repeated musical pattern. its usually used in reference to classical music, but is well suited here. this ostinato, this stubbornness, gives the music a sense of pace and propulsion.

out comes dizzy tunes highly coveted 2nd release -acid revenge-. it s set to be an absolute floor killer, placing emphasis on pumping club sounds. yet again dizzy tunes resident dj krime got himself a well-known chicago celeb - ron maney, also known as dj skull, got involved in this piece of pure energy. the eps genre is most described as chicago, acid, oldschool, ghetto house.

alex font repeats in oblack- only like the best and he does it showing the most acidic and clubby version of that the real house that permeates their sound from start to finish. this acid flow is the fifteenth reference of the pastorial label commanded by snna and nacho arauz- from ibiza the valencian alex font presents us with an original passage of festive house, trotter and no-friend of the depressions where the legendary sound of the roland tb-303 is the pacesetter, disguises the soul and adds foundation to the track. and, since it breaks the acidic sound through antonomasia, this acid flow, shows his playful and fun side. this is a bright and optimistic theme, designed and checked to make us dance with a smile on our face, no doubt. a bare-chested tribute to those early 90s when electronics was all about joy and effervescence.

the occasional (but always excellent) street edits series returns, this time with a trio of high-grade scalpel works from chicago re-edit hero rahaan. as usual, the source material is dusty and obscure, and the reworks revelatory. -city of disco- is in many ways typical of rahaan s work, with carefully cuts and loops being used to create a thumping, house style groove (admittedly one that pays due reverence to the source material). there s more of a celebratory, soulful feel about the impeccable -strung out-, which turns a little-known disco-soul gem into a huggable dancefloor classic. best of all, though, is -brighten you up-, which sits somewhere between later electrofunk and early house, a proto-proto gem, perhaps. either way, it s a killer.
