dessert island disc s 10th release features a brilliant disco gem from the mighty rahaan on the a side while the b throws up another aussie local with his own label but going under the pseudonym of ted empleton. both tracks laid out for a friendly tour of any dance floor with a disco bent.
heres the pitch: ask six of chicagos finest exponents of bumping house and pitched down disco cuts to contribute some of their finest works, blend them all together and present in the appropriate space either side of two 12 inch slabs. whats the end product? the rather hot looking chicago service from the amsterdam label lumberjacks in hell which features a merry cast of the citys finest in gene hunt, rahaan, jamie 3:26, cratebug, hugo h and boogie nite across two hot plates.
the occasional (but always excellent) street edits series returns, this time with a trio of high-grade scalpel works from chicago re-edit hero rahaan. as usual, the source material is dusty and obscure, and the reworks revelatory. -city of disco- is in many ways typical of rahaan s work, with carefully cuts and loops being used to create a thumping, house style groove (admittedly one that pays due reverence to the source material). there s more of a celebratory, soulful feel about the impeccable -strung out-, which turns a little-known disco-soul gem into a huggable dancefloor classic. best of all, though, is -brighten you up-, which sits somewhere between later electrofunk and early house, a proto-proto gem, perhaps. either way, it s a killer.
chicago disco legend rahaan returns to disco deviance and drops a seriously hot package of reworks. his raw and cut up editing style is heavily influenced by his heroes ron hardy and larry levan. and his versions are always guaranteed to be 100percent dance floor dynamite. as they say in chicago beat that shit rahaan! enjoy the music!
it is a family affair as grimy returns with heat from the windy city known for amazing dance edits. tim mcallister takes it out the gate with *rollin*, a classic soul/disco beater replete with joyous flute trills, leslie speaker efx and a pumping house kick. in-demand newcomer cratebugs *get up move your body* is a spacious, cosmic edit of a little-remembered canadian gem. the song ends with an intuitive synth jam that will be enjoyed by djs and home listeners alike. longtime grimy associate rahaan ends things with a bang. his largely original *buari traxx* mixes ghanaian rhythms with killer disco bass and the nuanced, tracky drum programming you could find on a dancemania record. the brilliant track is built for the floor and also serves as an apt transition into grimy trax, a sister label that will release all new music. chicago is still burning.
chicagos dj rahaan comes correct on this latest release from dublin disco heads fatty fatty phonographics. dirtyboyz takes an old bobby o production and sticks a rocket up its arse, blending in rough chi-town beats and some vocals from another music box/warehouse classic for some proper peak-time dancefloor devastation. getting up and dance is the kind of string drenched disco-boogie that he laces throughout his epic club sets, with some fiery ron hardy style edits to drive em wild. clap your hands, stomp your feet, meanwhile, rounds it off beautifully, a summery dancefloor swinger with a hellishly catchy chorus and a bouncy groove that just wont quit.
the excellent lumberjacks in hell imprint has served up some fine edits in its short lifespan to date, most notably from chicagos mutant beat dancer traxx and the labels latest release turns to two other windy city residents renowned for their collections and skills. rahaan needs little introduction for the disco loving community with essential drops on stillove4music, disco deviance and more, whilst mr sounds runs the excellent bring the heat website. this twelve is all about the a side >rainin bleeding boy< which puts a well loved uk ebm couple through the dub laden beatdown grinder - though djs will get plenty of mileage out of both tracks on the b side with >flip side< some supremely chopped up disco funk and >war i declare< a stomping and heavily filtered bomb.
comes on blue, marbled vinyl.

** repress 2016 ** two of the black madonnas most sought after early tracks return to circulation alongside one burning new jam on goodbye to all this, the latest release from stripped & chewed. drawn from the chicago labels 2012 compilation livin for the city ep, the piano dappled joy of *exodus* luxuriates across side a, spreading the good word with a pounding beat. *we dont need no music (thank you, rahaan)* from scrs004 takes another whirl around the dancefloor, its pinwheeling horns and infectious vocals pulling even wallflowers into the fray. and in case two remastered sure-shots arent enough, the brand new *who do you need* closes the record with a soulful thwack: half uplifting house, half blistering techno – all peak-time fodder. a fine addition to the black madonnas discography alongside records for argot, the nite owl diner, hometaping is killing music, and of course stripped & chewed.
