girlfriends and other machines is another distinctive work by mostly undiscovered berlin based artist rhytch displaying his unique dirty and soulful sound. the 6 track ep varies from edgy deep house to weirdo krautrock reminding one of the genreroots, while sounding like a legit fresh reinterpretation. the artists voice being revealed on most of the tracks is giving the listener a glimpse of who he is and adds some character traits to infamous rhytch. the ep gets completed by an outstanding marbod remix, which is going to make people snap with its flickering distorted 909 hats woven into one of his typical psychedelic housepads creating an irresistible groove and atmosphere. the ep being released on berlin underground imprint lofile records is a nice prospect of what is to expect of further releases and obviously a wise choice for label and artist which share the same hobbies - drinking and smoking.

the a-side opens with the powerful beat of clark nova, a cut that moves forward with a modulating synth line and simple but cleverly designed percussions. this is followed by unknown soldier, an intense techno weapon that reflects the distinctive sound of mekas.

for anma’s fifth release, reekee aka italy’s riccardo masi has produced a classic cut of uplifting house, quintessentially jamming a thunderous rolling groove with soft jazz piano. ecstatic synths unleash their primal screams throughout before the hammond steps up and raises the bar! remixer ricardo miranda cooks up a veritably frantic electronic jungle of idiosyncratic pulsing square waves and marimba voodoo soup, before vick lavender takes over the b-side with nigh on ten minutes of organically blissful jazz and groove experimentation. vick’s mix comes rooted with percussive breaks and a solid evolving rhythm section and is brim-filled with sleazy vibes, tender electric licks and rapturous synth pads swelling us into elation! lovingly pressed on 180g vinyl, hand stamped and labelled.

after a lengthy hiatus, tuskegee music is back with a heavyweight release indeed: it features tracks written by detroit heavyweights seth troxler—under his young seth alias— and cult fxhe boss omar s. amazingly they were written 11 years ago and have been long forgotten until recently being unearthed. the first track here was inspired by a trip seth made to berlin’s club der visionaere in 2005. “it basically was me returning to detroit and telling omar about this crazy music i heard ricardo play during the day.” the result, ‘deep’(cdv 2006 mix), is a spine tingling atmospheric deep house track. the drums are lo-fi and loose, the bassline is a meandering thing that really sucks you in and soft, gentle toms tumble around the groove and encourage you to cut loose. then comes the experimental slow motion drum shuffle of ‘detroit after midnight’ which the pair made after “finding loads of weird records in his basement sampling them and making a classic mpc detroit cut.” it has the sounds of people talking as if coming from the room next door laid over a lazy and undulating bassline, and is brilliantly weird and sketchy. last of all, young seth goes solo on ‘luiza’s inferno’ five minutes of him jamming on omar’s ms20 with a warbling synth line coated in warm tape hiss and layers of dust. it’s a beatless piece that shows how inventive and ahead of his time troxler was even as a young man. this is a brilliantly unusual ep and another winner for seth troxler and the martinez brothers’ tuskegee label.

the copie blanche adventure begins with ‘beats around the bush’, a 4-track various. the a-side – called yesterday, is a tribute to the 90’s house scene, on which jemaho and groove riddim painted their vision of the house music. on the other side – today, armless kid and louis dauvergne, the two boys from the copie blanche crew, gave their take on house with verve.

delsin records inertia series is back with a powerful four tracker from yan cook. the producer from ukraine has also released delsin s main label and associated ann aimee, as well as planet rhythm and cooked. he makes straight up techno that arrests your attention and does just that again here. toucan is first and is a spangled, underwater techno track with gurgling lines wrapping round shuffling percussion and insistent drums. it s one to get into your head, while puffin is more physical, with more warped synths and paddy drums woven together into a fluid, rippling groove that never lets up. the drums on dialogue are deep and land with real resonance while dubby chords rattling out to the horizon. last of all flamingo is the most manic of the lot, with hi speed synths and booming drums all coming together to make for powerful, sub shaking and room filling techno madness.

smashed atoms make a return after launching the magic circles label earlier in the year, bringing more of that sassy disco flavoured house music with a fondness for the good old way of doing things. the nods to rapture are hard to ignore on cut this way even if the ingredients are fresh, and there s no denying its the perfect formula for an addictive dancefloor cut with an old-skool hip hop monologue over the top. lost someone is a more sprightly affair that plays off bouncy synth lines and another discoid drum groove to create its infectious good time message.

for their 12th label anniversary, jazz & milk have decided to launch a new series called “twelve inch jams” in order to celebrate vinyl culture and the legendary 12&#8243,,, format! jams002 sounds the bell for the second round of the series including a 10 years re-issue of the classic sam irl cut “you don’t feel enough”. originally released as a b1 tune on his “african dance ep” debut on pulver records in 2007, this jazzy house gem found its way into the record bags of many influential djs over the years. from session victim, glenn astro, max graef to hodini… the record never disappeared in club sets but certainly from discogs a good while ago. so it was about time to give the tune a second life and finally press it on the format it deserves - a whole 12&#8243,,, side. the german production duo session victim are well-known fans of the track describing it as their secret weapon playing it in quite many dj sets for years, including their 2015 appearance for mixmag’s dj lab. hence, it is a great pleasure that session victim contributed a remix to the new release. their absolutely elegant and groove-driven version with a charming 90’s touch to it makes a brillant counterpart to the original with its jazzy piano-, drum- and double bass samples leading to an epic synth break that regularly causes ecstatic moments on the dancefloor.

nazare is a balearic house which has been left on the slo cooker all day. with a nagging baseline and lush pads a plenty. max essa takes us on a moody balearic tropical ride for his remix.
walpole is another slice of balearic house with a throbbing bassline and trips arms. this time the remix picks up the pace a little for a more dance floor, norwegian disco-esque groove from edsc’s very own neil diablo.

vancouver based producer, woodhead, adds masterworks music to his list of accomplishments with the minty fresh 12” ep, -deeper than love- just around the corner. after making his bed with the likes of editorial, royal soul and homebreakin , it’s no surprise masterworks would be all hot and heavy over these thumpin cuts.
kicking things off on the sleazy tip is -be with you,- a mid-tempo funk number that carries an irresistible vibe, bumpin moog bassline and a chug that is sure to inspire more than one dancefloor to do the hustle. taking things a bit deeper is -i love you,- with it’s hypnotic chords, brooding sub-bass and twirling groove.
flip the disc over to catch -love so fine,- which lightens things up a tad thanks to a shuffling rhythm and layers of chords and soulful vocals. ep closer, -whenever you’re around- amps things up with a heavy dose of 80’s chunk and funk… serious business to get the party all hot and sticky.

shaun reeves & tuccillo present a new facet of their ongoing collaborative efforts, with a collection of works that took root in the woods of ibiza. shantu’s first record opens with primero, a classy ride through dreamy melodic elements and a relaxed groove with a steadily rising pace. ingenue moves things into 2nd gear with a deep and funky bassline that is soon propelled further with a variety of organic percussion elements. the long b side zissou would certainly be at home in the team zissou minimalist playlist, a mysterious and psychedelic underwater trip populated with strange echoed synths and steady precision drum machine work.

superb album by east los angeles band the village callers, recorded live in 1968 and released on eddie daviss rampart records. seasoned and popular band at all the top venues, the village callers brought many different sounds into the mix: jazz, soul, r&b and lots of latin percussion. their only lp consisted mainly of groove-filled covers such as i heard it through the grapevine, i dont need no doctor, joao donatos the frog and a medley of aretha franklin hits. hector, one of the standout cuts on the lp and its only original song, has been sampled by beastie boys, cypress hill or de la soul among other hip-hop artists.

a complex web – the story of dive position and the shining path ... began in 1982 when peter miller (aka dr. william s ray – vocals, tapes, guitar) met andrew millar (aka maurice spectograph the nose-y pieman – program execution) in gold coast, australia. while sharing a similar taste in music, they decided to form a band, so dive position was born. equipped with a korg synthesiser and tascam 4-track recorder, they -wanted to have the sound of kraftwerk, the groove of can, and the menace of throbbing gristle-, ending up with -a cross of suicide and the residents-, as peter recalls. in a local record shop they met stig andre leonardson (aka vincent blackshadow), who joined the duo on percussion and drum machine programming. their motto was -now is then-. dive position then became the fatal charm around 1984, and the fatal charm became the shining path who eventually released their only album -basic training manual- in an edition of only 250 copies, most probably in 1986. the band then started to drift apart, and shortly after andrew sadly passed away – this compilation -now is then- comprised of previously unreleased dive position and the shining path material is dedicated to his memory.

get weird does love a tune that conjures up the feeling of or suits being played out in the desert. “falling” does just that. it was built to be played outdoors with it s spacious vibe and tight groove.

“i like sado music” is a gem released by blitz records in 1980 among other overlooked records of electronic disco, library music and soundtracks. “i like sado music” is also the only record ever sung by sandy samuel, the artist name of daniela samueli a prolific and very famous porn actress of that period.

rnt welcomes dusty digger extraordinaires al-tone, with a superlative set of rare edit gold! known for their eponymous rework series, al tone (aka al bumz and tone b. nimble) come hot out of the gate with feelin irie a gritty afro boogie stomper, before moving into the uptempo soul of simone manuel. flip the disc over for the guitar and clavinet-driven groove of groovin, and then they take us home with the theo-esque looped sax and falsetto gallup of wishes. from obscurity to eternity in 4 masterful reworks!

on “rest in space”, his first full length outing for music for dreams, the lp keeps a steady pace of around 90-95 bpm, but never gets repetitive with islandman taking us on a rich and ever surprising journey, full of quirky turns and mysterious instrumentations. the opener “rest in space” treats us to a funky percussion-thick rhythm that lounges into a pool of playful & jazzy horn & flute arrangements. this is followed by the epic “night wind” which sweeps across cinematic desert landscapes of synth layers and falls into a dark night time groove reminiscent of nicolas jaar & dave harrington’s darkside project. “seikleos” centers around a motorik electronic rhythm pattern (not unlike the classic electro-pop classic “popcorn”) that develops into a chugging balearic house jam while stand out track “future days” brings in a female guest vocalist to complete the album with a breezy full on groover that echoes of both sheila chandra and tom tom club. also included is the previously released digital single “agit” as well as a remix by berlin-based m.rux, toning down the heavy guitar of the original in favor of a more bouncier interpretation. the stunning “ikaru” wades in through chunks of jungle ambiance and watery percussion to lounge along on a rubbery funk bassline, coupled with a heavy laid back beat and wobbly derelict synth figures. “tawhid” is an odd mix of new wave brilliance and prog momentum that breaks into a cascade of pouring rain and surprising percussion breaks. lastly comes gorgeous eastern guitar opus “the true word of the wind” and the warm vibey dreamscape “following”. as a whole, islandman delivers a delicate buffet of influences - spanning the spectrum from hazy balearic pop to tropical new age flirts to deep spiritual psychedelic jamming.

next up on the influential artreform records label is the boss himself, aka kyiv-based dj and producer yevgeniy joss. often turning out tracks that sit high in the juno and decks charts, joss has a high-quality sound that ranges from slick tech to deep house and now he proves that once more.
up first is smooth, an infectious groove with lively synths scurrying about and bringing lots of dynamism to the drums. the percussion is crisp and the whole thing feels spaced out and futuristic. it’s busy and brimming with energy and will get any floor on its toes. sharp is a darker number with more menace in the drums. they are rubbery and supple and run through with edgy little synth lines. the track grows wilder as it unfolds and will really work dance floors into a lather.
once again the master joss shows just why he is such a tastemaker in the underground dance scene.

adventures in paradise launches with the esteemed line-up of dedication, featuring felix dickinson, tsuyoshi kosuga of cro-magnon and other like-minded groovers. previously found on dfa and claremont 56, this occasional project steps up with the heavy disco funk groove of -show me love-, which lays down a rich spread of instrumentation with danielle moore of crazy p fame on vocal duties. for those who just want the heads down business, there s an instrumental on the flip that lets the dazzling production shine through. for those craving and advanced slice of modern disco, look no further.

amsterdam based artist nthng continues to have a busy year. following up an album on lobster theremin and ep on transatlantic, he now lands on delsin with three tracks that touch on driving dub-techno and dreamy ambient. oralage opens with upbeat drum programming and gliding hits that make for a smooth flowing groove. distant pads add some spacey atmospheres and the production is effortlessly warm and driving. a souls search takes time out to drift in the cosmos, with waves of muted euphoria washing over you as you sink into clouds of ambient bliss. lastly, turn to gaia is a dubbed out techno roller, with long legged drums looping down low, reverberating chords adding weight and distant bell sounds charting the whole thing in a harmonic glow. it rounds out a super smooth and seductive ep.

the first vinyl installment from odt records is a vinyl only ep: ufo park. produced by romanian trio lisière collectif, and including remixes from melodie & teluric, under their duo alias glueped, and from steve o sullivan. the music is a 4 tracks ep: where -u - 2902 - 16- is a classy minimal composition, blending a tight beats with a deep and bewitching atmosphere that have been re-interpreted by our two remixer on the b side. in the a2 spot, it s the warm deep and groove-oriented -b - 0912 - 15- that has been pressed. designs of the ep have been created by our faithfull oriane yo, who used andu simion photographies in a pure and simple arrangment.
