some notorious electronic music talents have started their careers as percussionists. and so did yaya, but his tale is different to all the rest. his new release for desolat takes a unique, upbeat approach to 4/4 beats: combining heartfelt benin influences - samples from dialogue and traditional ballads - with the stretched-out tension and release of balearic and the bubbling pops and stutters of tech house, plus the occasional kickback to a commodore64 high score melody. raised in turin, italy, rhythm was his lifeblood for yassin legali, also known as yaya, from an early age. his father was the lead vocalist and percussionist for mbamina, a band consisting of musicians from benin, zaire, italy and cameroon. mbamina released eight albums, collaborated with artists like manu dibango and salif keita, were sponsored by paco rabanne and played all over africa, including a show for the presidents of senegal and france. their final show was with james brown in paris in 1985 - the year yaya was born. well-versed in his fathers legacy, yaya grew up playing drums and djembe, and at the age of 15, began performing as a percussionist in turin clubs. just one year later, he was already djing, playing funk, soul, afrobeat, house and garage. manu dibango and fela kuti found a spot in his crate next to records by masters at work and dimitri from paris: contrasts of rhythm and structure that pervade his music to this very day.

the latest gigolo release is one for the summer! aptly titled hot it comes courtesy of ivano coppola and christian prommer, the former being one of italia s most respected dj s and the latter being, amongst other things, one of the main collaborators for hells critically acclaimed album teufelswerk. taking a sample from willie ninjas classic record hot and building a track around the chords and the vocal leads us to our starting point ivano coppola plastic mix!
ivano coppola has been the resident dj at milan s plastic club since 1992, so it is fair to say that he knows what works on a dance floor, or, to use a popular phrase, what is hot and what is not. it is with this historical knowledge that we find the genesis of our track. i found it necessary to go back in the past, to start producing once again in a 90 style - using samples. the next step was to come back into the future and reach out to christian prommer, highly respected by many including ivan i consider (christian prommer) one of the best producers of the moment! he loved the idea, the remix was huge, and so we decided to co-produce the record. simple!!!
but, for christian this was more then a remix, hence the co-production credit! i liked the idea of translating an early 90 s house-music-sample in to a sample-style-percussive-techno-tune. lots of live played drums and percussion in this one, of course. i only later learned that the sample we used is from one of my house music heroes, maws louie vega. naturally the record found its way into the hands of gigolo in the best way possible, and in the tradition of such a great record label – i played it at the gigolo night in munich and hell came to me dancing and took the tune into his heart.

(the deep theory ep). the wait is over and the duo of damon lamar and specter have returned. this ep is picking up right where they have left off. deeply rooted in the underwater sound that have made the releases on tetrode must haves by heads around the world. side a is produced by specter and he drops his signature beatdown sound. >bazerko< is a stripped down minimal heater that builds up with 707 drums, sub bass and a hammond organ riff that really bring this track together. >nighthawk< is a beautiful laid out sunrise track. smooth drums, warm pads, and bubbly appregiated synths. inspiration drawn from larry heard and the deep techno sound of the 90Æs. side b is produced by damon lamar. >large crowd< is this beating track pulled and resurrected from the vault. heavy percussion loop, dirty bass, deep chords and a haunting vocal that must be heard to understand the meaning. >put it on ice< is a laid back downtempo track that shows the versatility of damon lamar. lush strings, dubby bass and melodic keys make it a track that just grooves and soothes the ear. tetrode music has returned with this solid offering and one thing for sure is the sound hasnÆt changed ... just more refined.

joker & ginz purple city quite simply put ? purple city is one of the biggest tunes you will hear in 2009, no fronting! being repped across the board by the biggest, pickiest names in the scene, hear is a rhythm that crosses boundaries effortlessly. think turbo charged g funk flavours, chunky square wave bendy bass and rolling carnival drums ? perfectly executed. rave funk ? served extra greeeezy!

show-b is making a triumphal procession through the heaven of arrangements and the musically modernistic housemusic. complex, but fleet footed, his rhythmic structures produce a soulful symbiosis with the music of long gone times of dance music. traditional elements, such as flutes or rhodes unite with sub basses, crisp kick drums and detriotesque bass lines, culminating in show-bs own definition of housemusic. shallowness, ordinarity and a simple sensation of contentment are not part of this definition.

opening track hocus focus is a full spectrum. opening with its tribal drums, the addition of cascading techy sounds and then its techno stomp. the brutalness is appeased by the wonderful deep synths that fuse everything together.
next up is the more stripped, minimal sounds of served . a colder, more moody electronic feel to this one, it pops along, locked into a vicious groove. white noise builds create the drama throughout.
finally don t try this at home continues with the heavy tribal tide. rolling drums, a plethora of toms, and a bag full of spooky sounds and efx, make a strong set building track.

christopher spero a.k.a glimpse has really made a name for himself the way that producers and djs in this day and age should: by making tasteful music of the highest caliber, and putting substance over style. these two tracks co-produced with frequent collaborator and head of the hypercolour label, alex jones, put that said taste on display in a refined and elegant form of house music.true friends pumps right from the beginning with a chunky rolling kick drum only made denser by the thick brushing percussion that surrounds it. before the beats become to overwhelming a soothing male vocals drifts in reminding how hard it is these days to find a true friend. a stark tune of epic proportions. returning with a similar pressure from drum programming aesthetic, which basically means hefty percussion layered over warm and tumbling drums. æcambria sets itself apart from the a-side with a more open-air vibe. light piano notes float along side softly played wind instruments, creating a surreal dreamlike audio experience that still has the tools to do damage on the dance floor. glimpse and alex jones have really put some true style, grace and class into their music. masters at creating a distinctive sound that exist in the space where warm and lush tones meet musicality and stimulation. a summer record with good vibes scrawled all over it.

dj support: dj hell, dj deep, brothers vibe, jerome sydenham, sasse, riva starr, laurent garnier, gel abril, axel o boman, siopis, ricardo esposito... born and raised in sweden, marco gegenheimer grew up with a big range of musical styles from reggae to soul, funk latin, pop and flamenco. he teached himself to play guitar and drums and started to play in rock and indie bands before arriving at electronic music. today gegenheimer lives in barcelona and is very active as dj and producer. his current style is influenced by his rich musical past as well as detroit and chicago, which can be clearly heard on his first perplex. kalakuta is an epic floating techno track, classic and modern at the same time, with outstanding mixing and sound design which will send all lovers of quality and emotional techno music on a journey into time and space. kuti goes into the same direction, with massive chord stabs above one of the coolest basslines you might have heard in quite a while, shortly breaking down with melancholic pads in the middle only to bring the groove back with even more force some seconds later.

the debut 12inch from finnish duo hannulelauri! first up is glittering night, conjuring visions of 8 bit videogame soundtracks applied to the dancefloor, or an alternative theme to the movie robocop (which lauri seems to have a strong affinity for), with shimmering electric synth chords washing over a commodore 64 groove before a peter hook soundalike drops a lovely bassline, making new order comparisons inevitable (a good thing!). perfect late night machine funk. next is sally 2000, a more introspective piece with insistent digital strings providing the foundation for a childlike toy chime melody, pulsating bass and more as layer upon layer builds to a fuzzed out, pixelated yet beatless climax. finally, the late night vibe continues as sally 2000 gets a version from finlands techno/house master jori hulkkonen who works the tracks pleading strings into a more dancefloor friendly mix, adding perfectly tuned drums and a nice, fat kick but keeping the synth melodies intact and the tempo slower than your normal electrohouse jam. adventurous djs looking for alternative moods need look no further! another strong flexx release.

16th episode of soul access coming from french artist adrenaline aka ryo peres plus remixes by well known swedish dj/producer carl falk and incoming swiss artist edelstahl aka carlos weber from stahlplatten records. for soul access ryo kicks things off with the hard edged production underpool , with its relentless drum programming, distinctive scifi influenced effects, and prominent riffs for a totally driving peak time dance floor approach. on other side carl falk remix, mastermind who turns the track into a main room monster, with mashed up vocals sitting over pounding drums and a relentless driving bassline. ryo s 2nd track jack 47 , gently building the production with layers of grooves, twisted effects, effective hard key riffs, percussion and funky deep bass line to provide a highly sophisticated storming dance floor work out. edelstahl remix by swiss artist again builds from an eerie mellow groove, to a much harder production, with a hefty kick drum and funky grooves, twisted driving vibes and effective vocal stabs. a consistently brilliant ep with enough variety to wet any techno fans appeal all round

enigmatic producer kaºpar delivers 4 tracks which vary from punchy electronics to breezy house. first track, in the club comes in a wicked gerd remix and moves forward with a driving, deep bassline aided and abetted by punchy drums, fluttering rhodes and kaspar & his friends tripping, stoned & abstract vocals. it s an 6 minute opus which navigates a shifting array of predominantly instrumental passages, featuring some fine solos and never tiring before its sudden end. house of cards and calvary centre themselves much more on kaºpar s versatile ability to create pumping house that leans to the new york sound and float between house, jazz and soul. the whole affair plots a course through a constellation of styles suitable for both home listening as well as dj-play. this is house, not the lazy off the peg kind, but music which lives up to its name!

london s idjut boys (dan tyler & conrad mcconnell) and rune lindbaek of oslo are meanderthals. as longtime friends and fans of each other’s music they have discussed the idea of working together in a musical context for years and in 2008, they finally began to make those ideas a reality. throughout the year they traveled back and forth between oslo and london to create their debut album, desire lines. the album is due the 11th of may. but before that, this 12&#8243,,, taster of the andromeda (album track) as well as a idjut boys remix) a meanderthal is a theory by matthew tiessen about a human that is always in the way of others. whether it be the person on the wrong side of the escalator, the person walking slowly, the person bicycling on the pavement, it is essentially the person that stops the flow of urban daily life. on the contrary, lindbaek, tyler and mcconnell s definition does not see this person as a threat, but as a person that is completely in his own world – a slacker, musically on his own. this could also be a good description of lindbaek and the two idjut boys. meanderthals serves mellow balearic disco. a warm and dreamy blend of dub, folk, prog, kraut, psychedelia and 70s west-coast combined to invent an organic, slanted, and proggy feel. recorded live, the album features contributions from good friends, including pete z (dj harvey) on keyboards, des morgan (yamwho?) on drums and percussion, malcolm jospeh (grace jones) on bass, per martinsen (aka mental overdrive) on percussion and raj gupta (laj & quakerman) as sound engineer
