brightons boutique house label black key recordskicks off 2017 with a fantastic ep from label newcomer cinthie. cinthie is a well established force in berlin: as well as being a resident at key spots ipse and humboldthain club-where she spins heady vinyl only sets-she runs three much loved labels and collectives in beste modus, unison wax and beste freunde. as such, she is a true leader of the underground house scene who also runs a studio complex in berlin, and so is very much at the heart of the house conversation. kicking things off is the excellent house rhythms , a rugged, bass driven, deep house cut with flabby drums and snares and icy hi hats all sounding informed by classic deep house greats like ron trent. warm, soul infused pads emanate from the core and the whole unhurried affair really sucks you in with its cosy and romantic atmosphere. the second splendid offering is liberty, a much rawerand direct cut designed for peak time sets. again it is riddled with jazzy chords that have real soul, but the drums are exposed and banging and the whole thing barrels along at a sweat inducing pace. this is a typically classy offering from both artist and label that kicks off 2017 in real style.

hicago, 1991. the house jam records go from strength to strength, having already released a slew of influential and classic records from 1987 onwards, the duo of larry thompson and rick lenoir are making their impression felt on the dance music scene not only in their own city, but on a worldwide scale. enter tikkle, another undercover pseudonym used by the pair for their own special brand of deep house tracks. -outer limits- was the first release using this name and is an essential ep of midwestern machine grooves. the tracks have that rough, basement vibe with a healthy dose of deep, melodic qualities thrown in, the track -outer limits- for example, has a sophisticated almost jazz like vibe that wouldn t sound out of place on an early ur release! the second track on the ep -in the beginning...- is a driving cut based around mach s legendary -on & on- (often cited as one of the -first- house tracks!) with thompson and lenoir adding some dope keys, strings and extra drum machines all with that trademark lnr swing. -holding on- is a stripped back, percussion led, heads down kinda jam... the kind of track to make dance-floors sweat, solid stuff indeed! the whole ep has been reissued as it was originally released in 1991, with all original house jam label artwork intact. for this special 2016 pressing rick lenoir dug in his vault of reel to reel tapes and excavated a long lost tikkle track that has never been released..... until now - -my mood (rick s cosmic mix edit)- is the closing track of the ep and is a fresh, 24 year old acid track with ocean deep pads - what a discovery, and one that will undoubtedly excite house heads! this track is exclusive to this repress! all audio has been lifted from rick lenoir s private collection of reel to reel tapes from his basement and remastered accordingly. this reissue has been realised with the full involvement of thompson & lenoir and is 100% legit

midnite spares, australian music devotees andrás and instant peterson hold a candle to overlooked avant-pop and electronic works by antipodean artists and outsiders working through the 80s and 90s. through co-presenting weekly radio show strange holiday, the duo slowly upturned their locale for inspiration - archives, country bookstores, private collections and convenience stores, searching for a place to anchor their own identities in the oceans of the island continent. the 10 tracks acknowledge a minor history, passed on via a network of friends, friends of friends, the libraries of radio station 3rrr and more often than not, the artists themselves. renowned mixed media artist maria kozic enters with the mysterious downbeat of trust me, her partner philip brophy responsible for digital and analogue sonic construction. a recurring character in andrás and instant peterson’s investigations, brophy reappears with a score piece from his divisive feature film salt, saliva, sperm and sweat, recorded as ??? entering with “cruising into the storm”, a raw synth and bass propelled work-out, moda squeezes energy in ounces into a midnight ready and sweat thirsty call to action. channelling his gang starr influences, break-beats are dug, dusted off and sampled onto “4 my people”. crackling joyfully and reminiscent of the 90s, a2 is not failing.
the flip side opens with cosmic tones, deep pad works and a rattling top ends from the 909, steering the mother-ship deeper into the cosmos. interstellar travels deepen via euphoric murky pads, a melting tempo, infectious bass and loose hats on “what i am”. moda ejects off ship somewhere between neptune and pluto...

jesus was black goes to chile thanks to the new vinyl release by the hand of producer andre butano & felipe. push cat ep, the artists first release for the label, is a refreshing fusion of the organic beats and the avant-garde music. the title track brings on an underground micro house essence with a thick bass rhythm and crazy voices. the ep features two cold remixes from the spanish talent jairo catelo (darkroom dubs, plastic city) with his bubbling synths and house rhythms making a master deep piece. jorge savoretti (viva music, little helpers) make it with hypnotic broken beats and maintains the deep feel that brought him to jesus was black. closing the ep we can find an awesome original track like -rework- with vinyl popping accents and a couple of vocal hooks, a track to make everyone sweat on the dance floor.
