youth isn’t usually associated with wisdom, or depth or complexity for that matter. most 22 year-olds are still figuring out how a washing machine works but in the case of howes (the solo project of manchester-based john howes) he’s making electronic music that is operating on innovative and experimental levels one might expect from a hardened career musician hitting their stride. having released a more house-oriented 12” on melodic a couple of years ago, his debut album proper is a record that is as expressive as it is cohesive. it’s a release that floats between nocturnal stillness and insomniac driven intensity. the shift, howes says, “comes from the forced and narrow nature of a lot of electronic music. most modern electronic music to me is too safe in terms of ambition, sound design and intention.”

detroit techno veteran terrence dixon marks another chapter of his long standing career signing for italian imprint out electronic recordings as population one. after releasing three eps on modularz, 30drop and his own outlet reduction in 2015 under the aformentioned moniker, terrence dixon is going to kick off the new year with two techno, retro-feeling original tracks capturing his typical production take.

madrid-based producer main hope has been recording music for over a decade, but only now decided to release some of it, kicking off the brand new turbocapitalism imprint. blending heavy influences from the original techno and house masters, the electronic music pioneers of the 70s, the work of laurie spiegel, the sound of the buchla synths, main hope is about complex harmonies and rhythms.

shawn o’ sullivan marks return to shifteds avian imprint with a four track ep under his 400ppm alias. following on from 2013s non nocere, the new yorker pairs trademark stripped back drum programming with heady, warping drones and frenetic sequencing. even at full throttle, careful attention to detail lends the productions a degree of musicality oft missing from contemporary techno. subtle nods to idm feature, and references to o sullivans work with katie o sullivan as further reductions remain in the form of spacious verb and fluid atmospherics, but the focus is undeniably on the dance floor. printed inner and outer sleeve... black vinyl.

its not often you hear a techno record produced by a total of five people. when it happens, it’s usually to mark a passage and make a statement. sometimes it is a matter of celebrating a rita of passage, a shift into maturity and the embodiment of a new skin. this is what repitch is doing with the fourth and final installment in their “features” series, reuniting all the crew for the the final blast of what’s been a long and massive barrage of heavy techno. this is the collaboration to end them all: repitch founders ascion, d. carbone and shapenoise have shared the studio with longtime allies and. together, they explore a common ground made of pounding metallic percussions, gutwrenching bass and thick, furious grooves, with each producer bringing his own peculiar contributions to the table. this last installment marks the end of a process that accompanied repitch throughout its whole existence, thus enhancing the beginning of a new chapter in the label’s creative output.

stl has been a firm favourite of phonica records ever since his first releases surfaced in the early 2000s. although he is highly revered within the underground scene, hes always kept a low profile and consistently pursued his own blend of boundary pushing abstract and experimental house & techno. the majority of his music has been released through his own something imprint but his unique productions have also found a home on perlon, smallville and detroits echospace. the two tracks on the amplified bleep package ep marks his first contribution to phonicas white label series and were extremely happy have him on board.

with house warming andy vaz returns with his 3rd full lenght album on his own yore imprint. due to andys half indian roots, he is lucky enough to owe a beach house just outside of mangaluru, south india in the state of karnataka. where most parts of the album were written over a period of 6 months.

ltd 2016 repress !! helsinki based common labour gives birth to its second offering on this limited vinyl only release. continuing in the same vein of quality twisted deep house, potholes unravels the mahla ep. the title track mahla gets the juices flowing with a hypnotic deep house groover. serenades head honcho roberto rodriguez takes the remix reins and works mahla into a more percussive and refined interpretation. its an honour having him on the common labour imprint. on the flip side, gambler sleazes off into b-grade italo disco spaghetti western territory. a possible soundtrack to a horror flick with kenny rogers stumbling into a truckers rest area after a messy night out. rounding off the ep, spoekhus picks up the pace and mood giving the handbag circle some ammo to shuffle their stilettos too. cementing another polished offering from this artisan label.

rezzett are arguably one of the trilogy tapes goto acts. the london duo has previously released a trio of impressive, off-kilter eps of fuzzy house and techno jams for will bankheads much-loved imprint. happily, zik zak is every bit as essential as their previous material, expertly blurring the boundaries between techno, experimental electronics, and distorted hardcore. while the drowsy-but-sweaty hey hugo all sampled vocal yelps, sweeping chords and clattering percussion is probably the most obviously ear-catching of the four cuts, theres plenty to get excited about elsewhere. check, for example, the intricate electronics and eyes-closed loveliness of the title track, and the fluid melodiousness of opener afyon or, for that matter, the comforting bliss of ep closer noklue.

under his chemotex alias, marcos cabral has been one of the trilogy tapes most productive artists in recent times. this is his third 12&#8243,,, for will bankhead’s imprint in less than 12 months. unlike cabral’s recent album for l.i.e.s, which reveled in its’ own distorted, balls-out intensity, thulsa strives to get a balance between becalmed techno hypnotism, skuzzy grooves and gently melodious intent. this blend is perhaps most satisfyingly mixed on the industrial-tinged clank of “delta city-, though the woozier, scuffled late night warmth of “music for security” pushes it close. twice he heads towards deeper territory, first on the title track’s trance-inducing synthesizer loop groove, and secondly on the dubby, locked-in tech-house majesty of “lorentz-.

superb throwback electro sounds of the early noughties on offer here from swiss artist elektrobopacheck, debuting via his self affirming synthesizer music laboratory. this is quite reminiscent of stuff on vitalic s seminal citizen records imprint a while back. highlights being atlantic intertravel and kubusmann calculates which sound similar to the majestic modular tones of japanese telecom or the late night electro funk groove of ride on the waves. sure, he s not trying to re invent the wheel here, but it s all good!
