helsinki’s we jazz records launches a new series of live recordings, the -we jazz live plates-, offering a closer look into the label’s live activities. the first installment of the series is a recording from berlin captured in october 2017. the six-tracker features black motor, bowman trio and jaska lukkarinen trio offering two potent slices of raw live jazz each. all of the compositions herein are previously unreleased or new arrangements.
the album -berlin 27.10.17- was recorded at club monarch located in berlin’s kottbusser tor during the second annual scope festival (a collaborative effort of berlin’s xjazz and we jazz). the dense atmosphere of the packed club is present in the recordings which showcase three major acts from the vibrant finnish scene. musically, the album ranges from the undeniable swing of jaska lukkarinen trio’s -roger- and bowman trio’s -the hillary step- to the scorching updated version of black motor’s -branches-, subtitled here as -berliner musik-.

fans of the berlin based nils frahm are by now familiar with his beguiling live shows where more often than not fellow touring artists are encouraged to join frahm on stage – the likes of rachel grimes, rob lowe of balmorhea as well as label colleagues peter broderick and Ólafur arnalds have all obliged with fascinating results. it will come as no surprise then that nils frahm, an accomplished composer and producer who signed to erased tapes in 2009, has extended his collaborative live musings to encompass the recording studio, working for the first time with noted cellist and fellow berliner anne müller to produce 7fingers.
with their first collective release frahm and müller have built a world where modern classical and electronica collide creating an intoxicating and delicious collection of songs. primarily a pianist nils frahm provides evidence with 7fingers that he can effortlessly turn electric throwing in loops, samples and glitches to accompany and showcase müller on cello. anne müller, a renowned musician noted for her work with the wolf-ferrari-ensemble, phillip boa and recent tours with agnes obel, proves an amp musical partner for frahm.

the finnish tropical troupe maajo is back with a two-track ep. in contrast to the afro-balearic sound of their 2016 debut tropic of tulli, the new defo / mansaba ep is a step in a deeper and sometimes darker direction. defo kicks off the ep with a driving 5/4 rhythm. reminiscent of mark ernestus’ ndagga sounds, it is a tribal tune with maajo’s signature ethereal disco elements. trevor deep jr.’s version straightens out the original’s unconventional time signature and focuses on a four-to-four beat and plenty of berliner dub. the remix is a solid dancefloor tool, traversing the original like a train making its way through a dark rainforest. the b-side is entirely covered by mansaba, a 14-minute long journey into inwards. this studio jam, recorded largely live, is a wild mixture of polyrhythmic sequences, krautrock guitar licks, equatorial forest percussion and violin synths. the trip starts slow and soothing, sneakily picks up pace and keeps grow and growing, eventually exploding into a full-on tribal dance.

knapp zwanzig jahre, 13 soloalben und unzählige tourneen lang war pi auf der suche: nach seiner vorstellung vom leben und deren verpflanzung in seine kunst, seinem standpunkt als gewachsener musiker und erwachsener mensch, seinem platz in der hip hop-szene, der welt und weiter. nun ist der berliner da, wo er immer hinwollte: da, wo oben ist - ohne dabei das unten aus den augen verloren zu haben. pi hat über all die jahre seine dues gepayt, wie es im hip hop-jargon heißt. und im zuge dessen hat er begriffen: -nichts war umsonst.- eine erkenntnis, die er konsequenterweise zum titel und leitmotiv seiner neuen platte gemacht hat. auf den ersten blick mag dieser satz wie eine floskel klingen. wie eine plattitüde. eine binsenweisheit ohne belang. doch wer pi kennt und sich ein wenig mit seinen werken und seinem wirken der vergangenen zwei dekaden auseinandergesetzt hat, der weiß, dass er noch nie auch nur einen schritt ohne grund getan hat. außer rebell zu sein vielleicht. -jede stunde, die verstreicht, kostet zeit, die noch bleibt / und frisst auf, was noch kommt: nichts war umsonst.-

nach der ep-reihe -the bells- und der single -don’t feel like- erscheint nun jatas albumdebüt -mexico-. jata ist das soloprojekt des berliner multi-instrumentalisten, produzenten, remixer und songschreibers jacob vetter. der vorab-track -monster- ist ein pulsierender slow-beat mit verwehtem saxofon an der schnittstelle von soul und r&b, bei dem man nicht zuletzt an den späten marvin gaye denkt. geschrieben und aufgenommen hat jata -mexico- im wesentlichen in frankreich, wo er seit anderthalb jahren wohnt. hier, in einem kleinen dorf in der nähe von genf, fand er die ruhe für seinen bislang größten musikalischen wurf. aber letztlich ist natürlich auch das wieder nur eine zwischenstation für den suchenden reisenden jata. abgemischt hat er -mexico- gemeinsam mit ash workman in london.
