the man, the myth, the legend, back in the 80s jesse rae, along with roger troutman and bernie worrell, was part of the p-funk movement that was hugely influential to detroit’s early electronic experiments. lesser known is that the enigmatic scot-funk warrior later produced underground electronic tracks in the 90s. the inaugural release on glasgow label southside shufflers presents two of jesses shufflers on vinyl for the first time on the global 95 ep- a sampler from his pioneering 1995 album compression. ever the innovator, jesse recorded the album collaboratively using live isdn technology spanning three continents, with the resultant tracks fusing african, us electro-funk and old scots influences. 23 years later, jesse’s under the radar shufflers sound more relevant than ever. southside shufflers are a record label and sports collective based in glasgow with outposts in london and amsterdam. sss aint no half steppin!

part 3 of 5 to be released over the coming couple of months. originally released on the phono label in 1995/96 the ‘parts’ series from matthew herbert are a much loved collection of house tracks that sound just as original and bold today as they did when they were first released. this series of 12”s were part of an early wave of exploratory dance music that paved the way for the deep house that still works its magic on dance-floors in 2018 some 25 years later. the mix of herbert’s playfulness alongside expertly grooving production and unusual sounds makes this unique collection of work. the odd few tracks aside this is the first time that these releases have ever been repressed. all newly remastered for this reissue series, the releases include stone cold club classics such as ‘deeper’, ‘take me back’, ‘resident’, ‘people that make the music’ and ‘see you on monday’.

tatu metsätähti and tatu peltonen formed their electro duo mr velcro fastener in the small town of turku, finland back in 1995. in 1999, after a couple of twelve inches, they released their first full length album ‘lucky bastards living up north’ on i220, which was well noted (not only for its hyper colourful cover art by the designers republic). the album took the duo touring in europe and overseas, and led to further releases on labels like stars-music, ali b’s air recordings, solina records, cyber dance and of course billy nasty’s electrix, as well as remixes for the likes of hardfloor, marco carola, dk8, transparent sound and aux88. returning to electrix with their third full ep for the label (and a gap of 13 years!) they have delivered their own unique and recognizable electro sound with two new cuts. ‘a monster in two worlds’ with its electro-funk sound, classic vocoded vocals and grinding groove is a perfect opener, while ‘bakteriofag’ (bacteriophage in english) like its name, creeps up like a virus, infecting the senses with its crisp and shining melody. additionally, there’s remixes of ‘a monster in two worlds’ from silicon scally (carl finlow in his electro guise) and m-twelve (the new moniker recently launched by billy nasty and surface’s nick dunton) to complete the line-up.

crown of brahma are charles stella, nicole willis & daniel wyatt. the songs “an angel on my shoulder” & “and i’ll be free as a bird” were recorded in the period between 1995-1997, originally set for release on an lp on rawkus records in 1997. this album would have followed the release of the group, repercussions, album charmed life (pony canyon, 1997). nicole willis was the lead singer / songwriter of this group. charles stella & daniel wyatt worked together at temple of soul in new york city, where some of charmed life was also recorded. these two vocal tracks have never been commercially released, however were heard by tommi grönlund of sähkö recordings and leftfield, who requested to work with ms willis in result. the two tracks have been remastered in 2017 by charles stella.

beginning in the early 90s, emmanuel top became france s first techno superstar, even if his popularity was greater in countries like germany and england than his own. he released a multitude of 12inches on the attack label la pipe a eau, krankenhaus, ecsta-deal, stress, turkish bazar, and many more many of which are compiled on the triple-disc release collection from 1995. top s next step took him to nova mute alongside heavyweights like plastikman. in addition to his solo work, top also collaborated with bruno sanchioni and bruno quartier in the mid to late 90s as the trance act b.b.e. (seven days and one week) and also as age of love (the original age of love).

takeshi fukushima aka takecha, gwm is one of the most important artist in 90s japanese house music scene. this release compiles tracks from -deep loop- released in 1995 and -jazz sauce- released in 1996 from gwm. gwm is most known as the label where soichi terada had releases.

house music broke through in 1987, at the same time when aids arrived in france with the first contamination peak in gay and drug addict circles. in 1989, the founders of act-up paris knew that both the fight against aids and triumphant house music should be joined together. from 1992 to 1995, the period covered by “120 bpm-, house reached its most beautiful plateau even though techno was becoming dominant. “120 bpm” is a get-together moment through clubbing, this moment where fears are forgotten by dancing with one’s friends, what we called “the chosen family” at act-up. boys and girls dancing in a club where the walls cannot be seen, flooded with simple light. this is their activist recess. arnaud rebotini, composing the soundtrack of robin campillo’s previous film, “eastern boys-, is a recognized dj, a composer and a kind man, which is for me the most important quality. here, his work is marked by restraint of his love for house and after techno. i believe he deliberately withdrew himself in relation to the film’s power and the aids theme
