the yore captain returns to his own yore imprint on the labels 21st release. shadow city presents different visions of funky house grooves. the a sides the y theme gets deeply moving with a funky house pulse before stoking the fire with the addition of speaking voices (trippingly intoning the q&a what are we doing this for? and the music), a move which single-handedly jumpstarts the track. after the voices appear, the grooves intensity escalates and plunges deeper, its gyroscopic house swing becoming more dizzying and torrential with each passing bar before coming to an acidy storming end. in its opening moments, shadow city opts for a deeper and more serenading vibe by comparison, but thats traded in for a slinkier attack at the three-minute mark that grows progressively more ferocious as the track makes its drastic upwards ascent. a trippin dangerous murder weapon to say the least. watch your heads! the b sides b2 track, mumbai dweller keeps the focus primarily on the bottom end, specifically a strutting tribal-house funk groove thats dragged even deeper by a throbbing bass undertow, adding dark chords to it, giving this ep a darker feeling towards the end. to sum it all up: this is raw house music at its best!

2009 was a great year for these days records, and 2010 promises to be even better. the platform stood out for its innovative yet functional club sound and unique artwork concepts. the new year begins with a new split series under the name universal consciousness, based on the idea of connection between all things, and that all things have been coordinated, and they combine to make up the same universe. the first part is dedicated to two very different takes on spiritual, cosmic space techno. on the a-side argys >sometimes im blind< generates a long and uplifting emotional climax, which features a solo that will forever stay in your heart. the track was recorded at the end of 2008, and despite numerous offers to release the record elsewhere, nothing was finalised and the recording never saw the light of day. soon after the birth of his own label, it naturally fit the platform and seemed a perfect way to start the new year. on the flip side, sheffield born alexander ross, brings forth a cavernous techno piece awash with reverberation and spacial echos that brings a driving yet non the less emotionally captivating moment perfectly in balance with the depth of the a-side.

dollkraut aka pascal pinkert is back with another great ep after his previously successful release >cheveux noir< on sound architecture. once again he shows his ability to produce a unique blend of house influenced by soul and jazz. loaded with warm and analogue sounds paired with his intuition for solid vocals and sampling.
the remixes featured on this record are done by two swinging tag-teams. first of all the well known krause duo (freude am tanzen / musik krause) with an edgy sharp jacking remix. on the b-side scott (the gym / my best friend / fluid ounce) turn the downbeat track precious fool with their jazzy twist into a dancefloor anthem. outstanding record!

today, one of the labels most successful releases, the >on the bus< ep gets the most complete of reworkings. the eps original tracks, lawlers own >hocus pocus<, audioflys >shazam< and tiefschwarzs >voodoo< were all conceived whilst traveling across the united states as part of a viva tour. born in studio that was housed in their tour bus, each track was then completed by each artist on their return home. after the huge response to the original release, lawler now delivers 3 brand new remix eps.

after a break of 3 years, fear of flying resurrect their limited label to give an airing to a track that has been getting some serious attention at londons uber club fabric, having been a staple in the sets of supa resident craig richards for some months now. tiger tiger is all about the tension as the 3 minute intro builds and builds with the an arpeggiated synth, deep bass and a spanish female vocal hook before dropping, no doubt, to dance floor pandemonium as the kick is introduced. its anthemic qualities are brought to the fore later on with a string breakdown and more lashings of the ultra catchy spanish female vocal. ekkohaus provides two excellent mixes on the flip – the main remix shimmers along in fine dance floor fashion. super slick percussion and snippets of the main vocal keep pushing the tracks along, occasionally dropping into the full vocal hook to get hands in the air and smiles on faces.

after a much-loved freerange ep, berlins andre crom & milans luca doobie return to their home label. >sometimes< might be the duos biggest dancefloor-burner since their breakthrough-track >ebony<. a tight groove, killer bassline, techy chord stabs and infectious vocals are the recipe for a pure peaktime anthem that will rock both house and techno sets.
>whats happening< is a deeper, more quirky atmospheric bass-heavy groovetool, with freaky vocals and a pretty unique vibe.
federico molinari gives sometimes a deep remix in typical oslo style, working with the chord stabs on a monotone hypnotic groove and subtle fx & modulations.
the vinyl is completed by broadway, a reminiscence to classic 90ies house music from new york, presented with a modern sounddesign. classic saxophone and organ stabs, a funky trumpet loop and soulful female vocals, this track is a musthave for all deephouse lovers.

the waiting is finally over! after all the ups and downs of the past year, we can happily report that joshua eustis now firmly intends to continue telefon tel aviv as a solo project. in order to mark his decision with a bang, thewonderful title track >immolate yourself< is being released as the second single from the current lp. the song has been entrusted to highly acclaimed and diverse remix artists who have skilfully stripped down the epic album track to more club-friendly formats.
the a side is delivered by label-mate thomas muller, whose finely detailed techno soundscapes can now be enjoyed on five bpc 12 inch releases. his >immolate< remix takes a much more direct approach. he reduces the lush arrangement of the original to a powerful basic framework, leaves out the vocals almost entirely, and creates a surprise when the track crumbles into sonic chaos towards the end.
miss fitz aka maayan nidam has had singles released on labels including raum musik and freak n chic, and these have been remixed by renowned artists such as ricardo villalobos. her version of >immolate< also makes a clear break from the album track and serves up her very own brand of abstract, dancefloor-friendly house. once again, all the opulence of the original is thrown overboard, a dry beat is placed at the centre of the arrangement and enriched with sinuous vocals.
ben klock needs no further introduction - he is the epitome of the bleak, hard minimal sound. his album >one< is currently available on ostgut ton, and as a remixer he has earned the highest acclaim for his version of depeche modes >peace<. bens >jack mix< is fittingly titled and lives up to all the expectations of the name. the track is stripped back to a resounding, hammer-like beat framework - minimised for maximum effect.
bpitch legend sascha funke delivers a surprise with another astoundingly reduced remix, at least by his standards. he turns away from the melodic richness of his current album >mango< in favour of repetitive fragments and an extended arc of tension which will surely make his >immolate< remix a massive after-hour hit.

part three of the cocoon 10inch series is all about the modern british techno scene, and the first hypnotic exclamation mark is set by yousef from liverpool. after collaborations with carl cox and x-press 2, >come home< - which can also be found on sven väths current ibiza review >the sound of the tenth season< - seems to become one of the most important tracks of the winter season 2009/2010: with a steadily rising crescendo, yousef is weaving around a >strings-meet-piano< motive with massive reverb that gives the tribal beats a deeper meaning and thus will be enchanting the clubs. the flip side belongs to london-based dj and producer tim green. he is releasing on labels such as four twenty, sci+tec and trapez for more than three years now and his co-production with emerson todd, >exercise<, even made it to cocoon compilation i. >lone time< lives on metal-like percussions that are loaded with adrenaline and once more prove the fact that modern techno cant go without tribal elements

upon yous first release of black gold in 2010 is a compilation shared by the cheapers, mathias mesteno, channel x and onno. the cheapers have given us a track that is slightly more technoide than what we have become used to, with an absolute bass beast called madame sans merci on a1. mr. mesteno has given us the second part of tante dunkel (once again paying homage to one of copenhagens most illustrious night creatures) with this house track. the first part was released on our last home sweet home compilation. after flipping the vinyl, b1 unveils channel xs last offering before releasing their debut album on stil vor talent”in the beginning of 2010, making us all the more pleased about this dependable club track. b2 is reserved for our dutch colleague onnos kicking tech house track that shows that upon you know how to start out the new year in the right way

their album is not about breaking barriers, but it is their own little twisted version of what they call techno. for yotoko techno can be heard in everything, so as such it is all techno. domu and shifty are influenced by lots of different stuff, soul, jazz, disco, hip hop, techno, some old break beat, new broken stuff.. as well 20 pence mad charity shop finds.. the album is about yotoko making music they think is cool and realizing that all this music is the same no matter what the bpm or groove.

there is a new label in town! young belgian producer compuphonic is launching his own project to express his vision of house music: union match music. talented and confirmed artists have already joined in, such as spirit catcher, fabrice lig, kolombo, and ante perry. the magic words in the name of which they all stand united are eclecticism and quality. first release loved & played by laurent garnier, darko esser, sebastien san, ken ishii, motorcitysoul, llorca, charles webster, chymera, electric indigo, d-pulse, to name a few.

all the tracks on this double vinyl demonstrate his innovative approach to music, running the full spectrum from soft ambient interludes to the more uptempo beat trickery. accept manages to combine both extremes and is an apt opening track, demonstrating the two faced nature of aardvarcks productions, highly constructed beats and beautiful melodies. taa baa sounds like it emerged straight out of londons co op, though aardvarck has not been to this broken beat mecca. th #1 is pure ambient bliss and followed by the deep spacious beats of dim. steps is based around a seriously crunched up hip- hop break, think domu scrapping with the funkstorung boys. the original version of zom is track 7 (ignore the tracklisting on the cd) whilst the stunning remix by attica blues tony nwachukwu is actually track no. 17. upset is based around deep raw bass, the structure of the track is created with pin point beat work. flight simulator is a silky smooth journey, proving that aardvarcks beats dont have to be broken. the stuttered synchopated bass stabs of th#3 combined with its fearsome breaks push the edge of the nu jazz envelope and gentle is an uptempo number combining the skip of 2 step with smooth german jazz styles - one for the quirky jerky types on the dancefloor. th#6 is another deep ambient soundscape helping to ease the pressure after the frantic percussion of knet. stampot shows aardvarcks ability to counter fearsome rhythms with melancholy chords, the forward flowing synths float the listener over the near chaotic drum programming. finally, the album closes with the weeping strings and treated piano of anders, bizarrely twisted and warped sonics. one beautiful voyage!

after the debut albums from future beat alliance and aardvarck, delsin strikes again with this very deep soulful ambient techno album by dimension 5. until now dimension 5 did have only released one 12, but one which was directly praised by fabrice lig, laurent garnier and others. his album alien artform holds both deep, ambient like techno to listen to (think: john beltran & detroit escalator company) as well as more dancefloor-aimed material, without losing the soft touch, (think: kenny larkin & aril brikha). this is (detroit) techno as it is meant to be: soulful & deep. should appeal to fans of aril brikha, d.e.s. and the dubbier german techno stuff. tip!

full artwork sleeves. electronic / dubstep label kinnego records started by boxcutter out of northern ireland is back! after the success of the first release (by boxcutter himself) he introduces the masses to a producer named space dimension controller... the techno funk alias of 19 year old jack hamill. following on perfectly from boxcutter and kinnego fluxs a familiar sound on kgo001, it features 2 tracks of deep, loved up electro. equally inspired by both the tape warped soundtrack to garth merenghis darkplace and early aphex twin, jacks all analogue production gives his tracks a timeless sound thats a mile away from contemporary electro and house. the beats are low slung and funky, and the melodies are addictive and show a natural flair. on the love quadrant, a girl / boy vocal exchange sets the scene while the track builds momentum, before the whole thing spaces off on a sweet minimoog solo. on the flip, electropod 250 collision has a deep 808 pulse and flanged bass, topped off with detroit inspired melodies and blurred out reverbs.

a1) aller retour. indeed we do like it very much, when a tune is like a punch – and this one pushes tremendous. underlaid with a sharp kick later, the strongly-held bass line involving from a small stream to an all-compelling stream. on top we receive a very un-christian boot with some oriental like organ-pipes. what more can you expect. oh by the way- there is actually a river in lower saxony with the same name like the track – however has nothing to do with it. b1) nevermind. indicate left and right over. and then a lob shot instead of a straight shot. this is a little what nevermind feels like. an assault from the deep, with a soft climax rather than with brute force. our recommendation for phasing out after an extensive club night

you may not have heard so much from andre (aka &me) so far. instead of the flash and glitter associated with most of his producer colleagues, hes preferred to stay in the shadows, co-producing and ghost writing for artists like dj hell and terranova. now after putting out his first solo single on keinemusik, which was supported by all the key players (front room label boss jesse rose, luke solomon, gabriel ananda, danny tenaglia and dubfire plus many more) &me is finally ready to go public as they say. he may have taken some time to figure out his own style of blending techno and house music but now hes out theres really no escape. with a name like an attention deficit childs mantra its a wonder he stayed in so long. the on ep is an excursion into the type of techno dusted pulsating minimal house that has been so big for artists like luciano esse and arnaud le texier and which is heard on heavy rotation in berlin meccas like bar25. with a side on ever present digital squelches (reminiscent of a rolf harrris style wobble board) are laid over shakers, stripped-back beat and the familiar on vocal. its not hard to understand why tiefschwarz have been rinsing it for quite some time now as a huge afterhours groover. b side talking days, swimming in lush deep techno elements, weaves through more melodic territory but is no less infectious

>minimal is cool but in the long term a bit too unsexy!< this statement of marcel knopf that is by now quite old, shows his heart does not beat for one genre after all. after the first and more technoid single release from his album >dusty dance< monsieur knopf satisfies his longing for real house with single no.2 >crazy about<. r&b singer camaras soulful voice leaves quite an impression on this powerful beat. in >skinny bitches< marcel knopf processes insane nights: you just want to drink a beer in your favourite pub but then you meet a couple of friends and they take you to the worst disco in town. this high-energy track is uncompromising and must be played during peak time and not during warm-up sets or after-hours.

nice price deal !!! intimacy waste no time in following up paul woolfords >false prophet ep< with another missive, this time from belfast duo timmy stewart& john mciver - collectively known as jet project. responsible for a steady stream of dancefloor moments which often combine a rare appreciation for dancefloor dynamics, engaging & provocative sample sources, and a knack for arrangement that maintains the energy. its not surprising to know that andrew weatherall is a fan. label head paul woolford first met the boys in belfast in 2003 and after many repeat visits to play at their residencies, the stiff kitten and shine, (both techno institutions), their bond was sealed. the title track from this ep takes a large part of its inspiration from a charles baudelaire recital and is hard evidence that jet project truly take their lead from nobody. on the flip, we march at dawn furthers the cause - and we are then taken on a ride by the in-form sian via his heart bound for hell reworking, which rebuilds the track and surges upwards with more pressure, capping off a killer new ep for all involved..

the choice of anja schneider for remix duties was an obvious one, the pair first met on a shuttle bus to an event and in short stead paul was co-writing for anja, becoming part of the driving force behind her huge debut album ‘beyond the valley’, now she pulls out all the stops to reciprocate with this standout reworking.
first up on the package is the anja schneider remix of ‘three weeks’, the opening cut from paul’s recent album. here the pair, deconstruct the parts and rebuild things into a deep and hypnotic version that has instant dancefloor appeal stamped all over it. solid, chunky drums rub up against simple spacey synth lines and warm pads to huge effect. bearing in mind the superb quality of the original this is a job well done, and a real addition to this great package.
next we have the original of ‘three weeks’, a track named after the extensive time it took to record. paul had originally intended to record the album in 6-8 weeks, then ended up spending nearly half of his allocated time on this opener. but it has to be said it was worth the effort. this is a slice of solid tech inspired house with subtle vocal elements and a musicality that cuts through the records club based nature. excellent stuff.
finally we have diamant flute, another winner from the ‘me, myself and live’ album. deep and highly engaging this again displays paul outstanding talents as a producer, weaving melodic elements deep into the mix and retaining an incredible underground electronic sound.
