ironic? no, it’s dead serious: sally shapiro keeps on dreaming of barbie and ken. sometimes good things come to those who wait, as is the case with sally shapiro. one shouldn’t really imagine the bashful swede from göteborg, who never performs live, setting a new trend for turning down lucrative offers. and the thought that she is working on something hip, is most likely even a little eerie for her. after all, she s just into something, which she’s been doing since her childhood in the 1980s — singing songs in the style of her idol sandra (”maria magdalena“). if she hadn’t met her companion johan agebjörn, who despite his musical socialization with techno in the 1990s has been deep into italo disco for the past few years and is a collector of zyx records, sally’s passion for synthi songs and fairy-like female vocals would have remained private. however, johan was screwing together some italo-style songs when he asked sally (whose voice he’d only heard from a previous christmas party karaoke) if she would improvise on his soft keyboard tunes, their collaboration was a done deal.
subsequent to their first releases on the labels diskokaine and permanent vacation, sally shapiro suddenly found herself in the midst of the ultra-hip neo/italo-disco movement, which is especially big in scandinavia. why of all things on the northern peninsula, where one traditionally listens to black metal and indie rock played with legs spread apart, the peculiar, yet sunny disco music became such an export hit, stays one of the mysteries of the pop business. it’s a fact, though, that next to internationally celebrated norwegian neodisco-heroes lindström, prins thomas and todd terje, the lovely sally has become the scandinavian disco-act in the mean time.

new ep from the superb evasive records featuring the cream of the tech-house crop with some amazing early feedback. galactic and house hunting we believe are the best tracks yet from coles & coker, and both tracks have already been destroying dancefloors in london & europe since before christmas, courtesy of evasive hq djs rob pearson and kirsten sees. the tracks have also been generating a lot of hype on internet radio show area38 (myhouse-yourhouse.net). jeff bennetts tracks are equally as good - in typical swedish style, ridzo and perma frost are truly twisted, abstract, and infectious grooves.

some notorious electronic music talents have started their careers as percussionists. and so did yaya, but his tale is different to all the rest. his new release for desolat takes a unique, upbeat approach to 4/4 beats: combining heartfelt benin influences - samples from dialogue and traditional ballads - with the stretched-out tension and release of balearic and the bubbling pops and stutters of tech house, plus the occasional kickback to a commodore64 high score melody. raised in turin, italy, rhythm was his lifeblood for yassin legali, also known as yaya, from an early age. his father was the lead vocalist and percussionist for mbamina, a band consisting of musicians from benin, zaire, italy and cameroon. mbamina released eight albums, collaborated with artists like manu dibango and salif keita, were sponsored by paco rabanne and played all over africa, including a show for the presidents of senegal and france. their final show was with james brown in paris in 1985 - the year yaya was born. well-versed in his fathers legacy, yaya grew up playing drums and djembe, and at the age of 15, began performing as a percussionist in turin clubs. just one year later, he was already djing, playing funk, soul, afrobeat, house and garage. manu dibango and fela kuti found a spot in his crate next to records by masters at work and dimitri from paris: contrasts of rhythm and structure that pervade his music to this very day.

after only two releases on 7even recordings f has already made huge waves on the scene with his unique sculpted approach to dubstep and techno.
now he is back with a cut which offers a glimpse at a different side to his productions, dub techno styled a-side >epilogue< comes correct, displaying what is clearly a long time love and appreciation of this music. clean production and atmospheric textures create the backdrop for a distant beat which drills into the psyche, making for a deep 4/4 journey trawling through the late night in a smoky haze.
on the b-side, ramadanman weighs in with a rework which absolutely slays. you could call it garage, you could call it dub-tech, but this track is so fresh, we re sure it ll have the funky house heads on their hands and knees as much as the dubstep crowd, dark as hell too - a total crossover. shit is tight, yo!
already supported by mary anne hobbs and rob booth amongst others, this release also featured in the 7even mix for the experimental show on bbc radio one in january 2009.

brooklyns own outernational deejay drops this ep featuring the uplifting hip hop flavoured title track done with real live show, n dini a funky afro beat groover done with mandingo vocalist ismael kouyate, and the love feeling a deep cut done with brian j (pimps of joytime). limited pressing.

delusions hits the spot once again with number 3, this time highlighting the production skills of a certain zepp001. the seattle based disco obsessive has been leaking out high class edits over the years under a dizzying array of deliberately forgettable pseudonyms but feels the time is right to push his original tracks. who better then to make these beauties available for you discerning djs than delusions of grandeur. dont sleep is a dark, brooding groover with throbbing bass, cute cuica fills and intense strings that lalo schifrin would be proud of. a real heavy mood setter and as good an introduction to the sound of zepp001 as you re likely to need. next up we have the mighty revenge in for remix duties on dont sleep. the much hyped master of the edit keeps the vibe of the original well and truly in place but opts for an even more stripped back approach leaving all the space for crisp claps, slowly building strings and bowel wobbling bass. flip over for giraffe, a more upbeat affair where the filtered keys come to the fore and things steer in a hyped up deep house direction. show your luv...

here is handguns , the new single from alex gopher. it s a four tracks ep : the original from mr gopher kicks off the show. galactic electronica with shudders of white noise and gurgled bass. this has peak time plays all over it! beni follows up with an electro guitar driven through with subtle bass lines and snappy beats. more dancefloor fun from dada life with an influx of heavy hoover bass and nifty percussive elements. knuckles finishes up with an awesome mix - stomping electronic beats and buzz saw synth breakdowns!

credited with some of the biggest tunes and remixes of our time, mr g returns to the detroit based moods & grooves label. while best known as a techno producer, mr gs relationship with m&g allows him to show his diverse musical tastes and offer something for the house and techno dj. one for the head û low slung reminiscent of a 12 minute theo parrish production with a extended buildup and teasers throughout. one for body û activator a nice blend of techno and twisted funk

supported by sis, ricardo villalobos,loco dice, robert dietz, markus fix... after kicking off with sis bubu ep(mitu001), mitus second release comes from yet another cocolino crew dj/producer. having released in the past on cecille and la pena, sercan is no newcomer to the game. his music, however, does bring something new. the title track, acuerdate, is an elegant percussive house track with a broad range of styles influencing the way it progresses. sercan smartly plays his dance floor tactics, making sure that with every new element that is added, all of your inner senses awaken… the b side kicks off with flow show, a track that james brown would work his dance moves on. the balance between funk /house / tech / groove is simply right. on the last track of the ep, sercan lays down an ongoing house vibe that will make evry single head nod. a transcendent effect elegantly kicks in, as the tracks old school feel slowly kick in and do it climaxes
