nena’s “feuer und flamme” (german for “fire and flame”, with the additional figurative meaning of “great enthusiasm”) was released in 1985. it’s the third album by german pop band nena and the fourth studio album of its singer, gabriele “nena” kerner. the album was a success, reaching no. 2 in germany.
prompted by the success of “99 luftballons” (1984), which included english-language versions of songs from the band’s first two albums, nena recreated “feuer und flamme” in english as “it’s all in the game” (1985), with lyrics by canadian singer lisa dalbello. the experiment failed commercially and was not repeated with the band’s next album. gabriele kerner recorded a new bilingual german-english version of “anyplace, anywhere, anytime” with kim wilde in 2002.

nagamatzu were the british duo of andrew lagowski (seti, legion, terror against terror) on synths, guitar, and programming and stephen jarvis (pure motorised instinct, terraform) on synths and bass. formed in 1982 after messing around with old tape machines and drum boxes, making numerous contributions to international compilations and erratically releasing their own cassettes. their name comes from a character in jg ballard‘s “atrocity exhibition” and their music reflects his influence. nagamatzu self-released their debut cassette “shatter days” in 1983 after messing around with old tape machines, drum boxes and effects.

derek carr is a name known by few and far between, with only a handful of vinyl releases in the early 2000s, he built a worthy but unfortunately not widely-spread reputation for putting together stunning deep techno. originally pressed in finite numbers, the records have recently found themselves in demand on discogs, and rightly so, derek’s music is in a class of its own. having been a big fan since his releases on then local (to label owner ben) leeds label geek records, for those that knoe has dug deep into the archives to put together a sizeable selection of dereks back catalogue, with some unreleased gems dotted amongst the classic must-haves, spread across three eps
