free soul 1969 the groove is heavy too ñ and a popular hip hop sample ñ but really itís all about klemmerís blisteringly intense, stream of consciousness freak-out. been sampled over 16x from ini to ed o g & da bulldogs to kurious, akinyele, dred scott to name a few. klemmer just wyles out on the sax keep that psychedelic funk moving!! side b. up above the rock edit 1968 you wonít find too many jazz songs that start with a drum break, but then this is probably one of the better jazz/soul hybrids iíve heard in some time. produced by richard evans this song is a perfect display of acoustic jazz funk with ron carter & grady tate filling out the rhythm section. dance floor classic!

comprised of vancouver producers and multi-instrumentalists nick wisdom and astrological, canadian duo potatohead people boast a number of noteworthy accolades thanks to a their signature sound drawing influences from 90 s boom-bap, future soul, classic jazz, deep house and boogie/funk. beginning with a series of ep s, including their landmark -kosmichemusik- ep, potatohead people s productions quickly made their way to artists like illa j who tapped the duo to produce his now critically acclaimed self-titled album, as well as producers like kaytranada (who co-produced illa j s -strippers- with the pair). supporters such as soulection, nightmares on wax, pomo, dj spinna, big boi, and phife dawg have also played formidable roles in championing the sound of potatohead people worldwide.

when daniel kyo was producing galaxy in his studio he stood up and felt it. following several months of what he calls a -musical reset-, he knew he d hit something special. after releasing music for a decade, core might be the boldest step in his career. a new identity in which all his influences finally come together into an absolutely fresh perspective. melodies are still the main driving force of the five cuts in galaxy , but the approach is more raw and heartfelt, injecting the kind of vivacity that determines if a track it s simply a product of it s time or if it becomes timeless. borrowing elements from the cosmic side of techno, the darkest corners of trance and the glacial atmospheres of synthwave, all of the tracks in this ep ooze the kind of immediacy and transcendence you can only find in the best 90 s dance music. driven by is interest in astronomy, daniel says he tried to achieve an -outer space feeling-, we can only add that embracing the void was never so gratifying. the 12- comes housed in a sleeve designed by barcelona-based artist alicia carrera.

in 1980, during her run on broadway in the musical, ain’t misbehavin’ and before being cast in dreamgirls, singer/actress and detroit native roz ryan teamed up with the legendary team of dennis coffey and mike theodore on a six song album that wound up being unreleased. recently, the folks at super disco edits released this 45 featuring roz’ taking on preston glass’ “keep shining” b/w “put love back” (composed by eric mcclinton). both tracks were from the theo-coff sessions and make their debut for lovers of dancin’ (“keep shining”) and romancin’ (“put love back”). enjoy!

blackcash & theo get back at it with the latest in this series of funk soul party edits. pleasure bouncy lady is an amazing funk break track, produced by jazz legend wayne henderson of the crusaders. the intro break has been extended, and is one of the all time classic hip hop funk breaks. elements of this track were sampled on brand new funk by dj jazzy jeff & the fresh prince, word to the mother (land) by big daddy kane, and church by de la soul. whatnauts why cant people be colors too is a soul / r&b jam with another heavy break, as sampled by q-tip, pete rock, diamond d, dilla, and oh my god by a tribe called quest featuring busta rhymes.

esteemed composer piero umiliani released scores of music in his lifetime from the famous to the obscure, but his forays into jazz continue to be a delight for diggers the world over. here galaxy present storia e prehistoria, recorded under his alias rovi and originally released in 1972. its a stirring collection of music that touches on soundtrack themes throughout, capturing the sound of the era impeccably while sporting umilianis inimitable touch in the same breath. the album is full of sumptuous orchestrations of brass, keys, harp and more besides, each piece loaded with romance and cool as could only come from italy.
