q: how did quinn and alexis meet?
a: the two were introduced by chris veltri, owner of legendary record shop groove merchant in san francisco. veltri and luke had made a pair of plunderphonic dusted disco 12 inches under the name coppa. georgopoulos was a founder of the group tussle and asked if coppa would do a tussle remix. this led to luke acting as producer on the tussle album telescope mind.

following the success of the midnight express single >danger zone<, robbie m and terry patton continued to search for new sounds. over the next few years the duo would produce dozens of instrumental sketches. terry always recorded these backing arrangements to cassette tapes so they could easily listen to them later in the car. cruising the streets of rock island il, vocalist robbie m would write the additional melodies and lyrics.

mabaan soul are back on metroline limited with their third release for the label. the talented italian duo have been causing a stir in the house and techno underground world with their 2009 release on metroline being charted by chicago legend dj sneak in his best of the year chart! on top of that, another house legend satoshi tomiie after hearing their debut new orleans ep on metroline limited, promptly asked the guys to release on his label saw recordings! the opening track joseph is jacking disco groove with an insistent bass hook and infectious lead synth. summer is nearly here! frankfurt, is a love song for the original robert johnson crew - the good people of frankfurt who really know what they’re dancing to. its an intense 5am grind that brings driving european warehouse techno together with the deep soulful grooves of detroit house. inxec and matt tolfrey pump up the midrange on their remix. they pick out a nice groove, and build on it with bright and airy percussion while maintaining the original disorientating shuffle and boomin low end. funky is definitely back. that rolling bassline keeps you locked in, and those brutal mpc-style percussion loops are would make marley marl proud.

here we have a double a-side 12-inch, with an intriguing new development of the secondo sound. still banging, still aimed at the club but with a sense of maturity and laid-backness, that the previous secondo material for dreck records might not have been centred around. the whole outlook has become more house orientated and we are very excited about this new mixture of the secondo splice-funk with the steadiness of early 90s house generating its own idiosyncratic sound. on the a-side, i think im gonna likeestablishes the housey mood of the 12straight off. a brief vocal sample is dotted over a relaxed rhythm until a break mid-track introduces the second half to its full extent and bloom. ædoktor panglosson the b-side continues with the mid-tempo flavour set out by the aside and is defined by a steady build up towards a disco sample beautifully placed towards the end of the track, where a heavy bass line cuts short the euphoria of disco strings. the sampling and references in both tracks have been pushed to the background and mentioning any of them would not do this exciting new material any justice. its all fresh!

a collection of rare and very sought-after underground british disco, funk and soul tracks avoiding the obvious hits that have been on a million cdÆs already. many of these tracks never went beyond a very small local release but have since become very collectable - buying this lot would set you back somewhere in the four figures.
back street brit funk is the latest compilation from dave lee aka joey negro released on the z records label. the double disc album features highly collectable tracks from the late 70s through to the mid-80s with sleeve notes from soul weekender veteran mark webster.

>afro rock vol. 1< is one of the most important compilations of heavy original 70s afro funk and soul to be released in recent years. originally surfacing on duncan brookers indie kona label in early 2001, the album single-handedly kick-started the thirst among jazz, funk and soul fans and diggers to rediscover lost music from africa made during the 60s and 70s from a time when many countries were gaining independence and celebrating a pan-african identity within their music. the album was one of the first to reach a far different audience to the traditional ?world music? market and spawned many further projects and labels in its wake. a year later, the >nigeria 70< compilation surfaced on strut and labels like soundway and analog africa would continue to unearth amazing lost gems from the motherland.

dolly continues after the great jakob korn release... steffi and old klakson label partner dexter colaborate. dexter drops dolly 2 with some mad old schoolish detroit influence called 1992... this is what we would have loved to hear from reese! with the trade mark sharp beats of dexter injected with phat funking kms techno (including reese bassline). redbox is the same recipe. dancefloor orientated old school house and techno influences with powerful production skills. big peaktime tracks without doing the standard tricks... pure dancefloor blizz!

the bristol based general midi return with great hurrah for >absinthe<, the most accessible track from their 2009 album >operation overdrive< the pair have taken the impressively catchy vocal tones from the original and spread them wide across a most impressive remix package.
the bristol waters run deep as fellow city resident and big dog nick warren contributes a progressive chunker. trademark, progressive grooves and gu crunching basses abound just as you would expect. also leading the pack is the dancefloor version from the midi boys themselves. tight programming and cascading whoomps and effects lead this mix directly to the dancefloor, not passing go.

wonderful release by kyle hall on his new detroit based label wild oats. masterpiece 4 track ep, each track divine and unique in its own way. hot jazzy kyle hall fashioned deephouse that can serve a lounge and at the same time bang even harder on a dancefloor. kyle halls experimentalist off beat antics meets smooth jazz would be a way to describe the sound. poly rhythms everywhere but at the same time a cohesive groovy soulful feel. overall this ep is a must buy for anyone who is for the future of the electronic music genre and enjoys quality.

mumbai science... sounds boring, right? dont worry, we are not talking about obsessed white-suit-scientists but about a duo of musicproducers working their way up the musicgame. after having worked on different projects in the past, they now join forces in what might be one of the freshest sounds you will hear this spring. they are debuting on lektroluv records with a three-track-ep including mumbai science originals woof, 3200 and coconuts: eastern vocals, southern bongos, western flows and northern coolness, that about sums it up. mumbai science will be all over the place in the next few months, so there will be plenty of oportunities too see and hear what the fuzz is all about!

we would like to welcome deep a and biri to upon you records. these two up and coming young producers from israel have sent us three jackin house tracks, which we know you will enjoy. wed had an eye on them for a while after hearing their tracks that they released for kammer, trapez and rotary cocktail, all the better that they now have another platform for their darker house style. on a1 we have barzilay a track that is dedicated to the club in tel aviv where deep a is a resident and salutes the vibrant energy of the city. b1 is wilder and more psychedelic. deepa & biri made a gem called emergenze that subtly pushes itself forward then rolls over everything in its path. hoya on b2 keeps the mystical suspense level up where it should be, and adds a bouncier tom-groove to round things off perfectly. shalom!

dekmantel anthem is created late night after a legendary night at one of the dekmantel parties in amsterdam. as a homage to deep late night sets its called dekmantel anthem… easy does it. a deep late night groove, but with enough swing to last until way after the party is over...

queen atom is back on serialism following on from the success of his recent >refuse greed< ep on dumb unit. blu samba confirms queen atoms talents to make dancefloors sashay to his beat and is strengthened with remixes from two highly rated artists who we welcome with open arms to serialism, ahmet sisman and seuil. coka zero has elaborate percussions and an elegant beat, while perlon-esque sounds melt right into the landscape, a beautiful master melody often wakes up bringing everything to a complete harmony. a driving groove with playful drum patterns and jazz elements really showcasing queen atoms production talents that have been demanding attention from his dumb unit releases and live performances around the world, most notably at watergate and city fox. fix ur mama is a very analog-sounding techno affair with that oscillating bass guiding the tune all the way through, with delicate percussions tempting and teasing us and filling all the interesting spaces. a deep track that forces us to move. coka zero gets remixed by ahmet sisman. as we all know, ahmet sisman brings a totally fresh and unrepenting take on all things house and techno! the groove in his remix is just a purely coherent rhythm, complemented by techy hihats and delayed vocals taking us deep and sexy breathy, fresh and groovy!. a track to cause serious damage! ahmets take will shake any building to its foundations with his unapologetic bomb! seuil then comes in with his own edit in his unique and elegant style that has been gathering followers from all corners of the globe. the drive and propulsive groove is there whilst he experiments with jazz keys off setting the original elements that are still in tact. as would be expected from this artist at the top of his game, his remix is sublime production with hints of romance, deep elements all playing around a beautiful groove. seuil bringing a masterful debut remix for serialism! a fabulous package from serialism!

the united kingdom and new zealand unite on the latest get digital release, as tim green and emerson todd team up for two tracks of trendy tech-house. both of these guys had a splendid 2009. tim with his releases on dirtybird and emerson providing a contribution to get digital, at the end of last summer. their initial collaboration came in the form of exercise, which popped up on a compilation from sven väths admired cocoon label. make meis driven by crisp and tight beats that one would expect from these two producers, before tumbling into a 1920s speakeasy jazz drum solo. a flurry of vocals shoo off the drummers as the beats takeover again with an intensified energy. after all that dancing, you will surely need some foot treatment. that is where nail clippertakes over. a sonic pedicure, to easy your tired toes? not quite

we welcome this fantastic producer on trapez with this piece of music which is quite different from most of what we get today. the title track >ghosts< feels like as if klaus nomi and kraftwerk were performing together... something we would have loved to have seen but which never happened. this track is not for the people who love it safe but for the adventurous and the wicked. voices like sirens striking with high pitched tongues being counteracted by basslines with a surface that can only be described as rough as chunks of splintered steel. a brilliant stop and go feeling shows that christian martin is the master on the steering wheel when it comes to controlling the movement.

when casting a weary eye towards the impending chill of winter, its important to remember that the choice of company kept can greatly affect the way in which one wiles away the long gray hours. in this case, we didnt even need to look further than our own backyard. enter deep techno masons, donor/truss. made up of greg schappert of brooklyn and tom russell of wales, their collective efforts have seeped into the consciousness of world class djs, producers and fans of uncompromising techno music through releases on synewave, miniscule, dilek, and dumb unit. with this, their first ep on thema, they have begun expanding their signature sound. the heady claustrophobia we’ve come to know and love has opened up just enough, spurring a graceful and startling evolution. we also would like to say that we re very happy that themas first release for the year 2010 is, in part, from local nyc based talent. mr schappert has been a big supporter of this label for quite sometime and to have him and tom step onboard is just about the best way we can think of to start the new year. the future is here, welcome 2010!
