the japanese producer and dj kuniyuki takahashi is the subject of music from memory’s latest retrospective compilation with early tape works - 1986-1993. composed of two volumes, the compilations gather together a selection of tracks from a tiny run of privately released tape only albums, highlighting a fascinating early period in kuniyuki’s musical output, one of which little is known.

as ever, the next project on opilec music is one with a rich back story this time paying homage to a very specific disco scene of the early 80s: it finds label boss i-robots turning out one of his brilliant reconstructions, namely of a classic and cult track by one hit wonders ahzz. this track was first released on land of hits, a label run by peter brown (who also wrote -material girl- for madonna) and michael campbell and has now been officially licensed for this reissue by opilec music. the track, new york s movin was huge on the new york disco scene and was played by the likes of david mancuso at the loft, larry levan at the paradise garage and by nicky siano at studio 54, but continued to be a big hit with modern new york tastemakers kenny dope, dj spinna, danny krivit and his body & soul party crew well into the 90s, as well as with stars like motor city drum ensemble and bulljun. i-robots is a notorious producer and record collector with a vast understanding of the history of house and disco and his version combines an original vocal and instrumental version into something really magical. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take i) is a jangling, organic and lose limbed disco number with a funky drum line, soul in its bones and plenty of lovably rough percussion, clicks and drums. a retro and impassioned vocal line adds flair to the track at the midpoint just before that groove kicks once more. this version is featured on the new i-robots - reconstructions 2007-2017 10th year anniversary release. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take ii) is then just as emotive and outgoing but after the break has more of a focus on funk. this is a huge party starting track filled with feel good vibes and once again proves opilec music work on only the most special projects.

the “natty dread a weh she want” set brings together two legends of reggae music. the stylish and unmistakable falsetto voice of singer horace andy and the production/dj singing skills of tapper zukie. both artists catalogues of music stand up strong but this, originally released 1979 set of songs seems to have brought something special out of both of them when producing/writing and arranging this set of tunes. “natty dread a weh she want” was a massive hit when it was released by tapper zukie and horace andy but this timeless track still sounds as fresh today as the day it was released in 1979, as do the other tracks on this fine album.

in 1996 serotonin label heads selway and szostek went to moscow to perform at the invitation of &#1055,&#1058,&#1070,&#1063, magazine. synapse performed at the -waterclub- and met the legendary dj compass vrubell. they went to his -studio- where he had perfected the art of making entire tracks out patterns on the yamaha dx-5. szostek brought a dat of these jams back to nyc and schmer-003 dj rx-5 -a taste for crap- was released as a small run white label in 97. the run sold out and disappeared to be forgotten forever... until 2016 szostek casually mentions its existence to techno uber-nerd nina kraviz who just had to have it for her -fabric 91- cd. so dj rx-5 was back from the ash heap of history and schmer got a new release from him on schmer07. then schmer got the word out far and wide that they d like a remix ep for two of the originals: compass provided stems because like a miracle he still had the patterns after 20 years. heeding the call were pointsman, tripmastaz, steve stoll and schmer s own bpmf. so this is what you get: -a taste for remix-. it will leave your lips wanting more, for sure!

nice price deal !!! following our quest for inventive approaches within the sometimes tired and highly commodified house / tech house / techno / minimal or whatever you call it scene, we ve gone this time for landesvatter. regardless of having already signed a few full lenght lps on the highly esteemed normoton as well as on under_line and others, joachim landesvatter prefers to keep a low-key atittude. he offers us two great tracks, each one followed by a very special remix. the original of nome is a highly bouncy digitech house track for the dancefloor, with an infectious sinewave to keep you hooked from beggining to end. the remix of nome, in charge of arp aubert (marco niemerski aka tensnake & stephan lorenz) who run the great mirau musik, comes on the form of a hysterical dub house track that literally puts >the roof in the air<. we recommended for full effect to keep the volume on the red. as usual, the second half of the release follows at a quieter pace. hausse is a track on a out to lunch tradition, greatly influenced by detroit but at the same time distancing itself from the current plethora of nostalgics. in-house duo taron-trekka closes the package with a deep remix, rich on freaky jazz touches. we lack words to describe it.

yet another solid gold modern reimagining of the mighty loleatta holloway, this time her infamous 1977 smash hit & run goes under the knife and is tweaked to devastating effect by 2 of chicago s finest modern day editors - jamie 326 & cratebug. anyone with even a passing interest in disco or house will be more than familiar with these 2 guys names. having edited and remixed numerous cuts in their own original ways, they take this all-time salsoul classic and strip it right back to the essence, to the very basics, and in the process create a total dancefloor weapon. this edit originally came out a few years ago (2013) on a compilation that showcased the new wave of contemporary talent emanating from the windy city and naturally it was one of the cuts that stood out, finding favour with a wide variety of dj s across the board from motor city drum ensemble, todd terry, jeremy underground paris, theo parrish and more. drawing comparisons with paperclip people s anthemic throw from 1994 in the way it snatches a killer loop from hit & run s bassline, hit it & quit it is a monster, a record you ll literally play over and over and over again, a relentless disco juggernaut that oozes power. it made perfect sense for this legit single-sided reissue 12- to come out on salsoul records, the home of loleatta holloway s finest material and all of her classics. this limited reissue has been made in conjunction with jamie 3:26 & cratebug and salsoul records, 100% sanctioned and lovingly re-presented for your dancing pleasure. this one is hot. sleep at your peril!

following a run of local transmissions from a sagittariun, crump, rob smith and atki2, idle hands turns its attention to berlin and the straight-up, no-nonsense techno thrust of johanna knutsson and hans berg. both respected artists and djs in their own right, the pair have been turning out 12inches together for the free spirit society, klasse and crime city disco over the past few years, but most importantly they ve been steering the excellent ufo station recordings as a vessel for their punchy, primal techno tracks. the sound on this ep taps into the pure form of stern, dark dancefloor tackle favoured at idle hands – no extraneous filler, plenty of space in the mix, but equally built with warmth and personality rather than monochrome functionality. if you need further proof, just look to the fact the ep is named after a swedish soap opera from the 90s. the bleeps and bass tones that pulse through -taggen- are so finely crafted they need not skip and dance around the arrangement. the melodic interplay on -klimax- is subtle but ultimately uplifting and optimistic where so much techno concerns itself with oppressive gloom. -bimbo- finds the pair embracing a more psychedelic approach, but even here the modulating effects processes are kept within certain boundaries so as to not dilute the impact on the floor. after all, this is music to dance to, to be felt over a large system (where possible). moving from leftfield bass excursions to minimalist 2-step, uk techno and now onto this much more continental sound, themälarviken ep continues to widen the range of idle hands musical tastes without losing sight of the complete picture.

per martinsen aka mental overdrive is one of norwegian dance musics founding fathers. alongside friends such as bjorn torske, biosphere, rune lindbaek and dj strangefruit, martinsen was integral in laying the foundations of norways now blossoming dance music scene during the late 1980s and early 90s. as a producer, he cut his teeth making house, techno and hardcore for belgian imprints ssr and r&s records at the turn of the 90s. he was a regular at the r&s studio in ghent, programming and mixing for other artists including joey beltram. since then, per has continued to produce and release quality electronic music, both under his mental overdrive alias (see releases on full pupp, smalltown supersound, rett i fletta and his own love od communications imprint), and as part of outfits such as frost (alongside his other half, aggie peterson) and illumination/ chilluminati. per is featured heavily in ben davis and pete jenkinsons documentary film chronicling the rise of norwegian dance music, ‘northern disco lights.

coming hot off his rather expansive cognitive dissonance 2x12inch for love notes, and also an ep for axetrax, tape_hiss herein continues his impressive run. on jacob s ladder, the artist pushes his emotionally wrought sound over cooking percussion and bubbling acid undertones. maspeth ave is quite honestly the nastiest bassline we have heard on a deep house track in some time, sure to cause spontaneous bass face in the listener. life as an echo uses soaring chords and synths to prove its point, and forests of my mind finishes the ep off with a pitch bending chord that pushes the track right along. yet another extremely cohesive, emotionally charged effort from this artist.
