groove line records are proud to add to their 2015 releases of half-speed mastered re-issue singles with both the extended special disco version and instrumental version of earth wind & fire s 1976 funk bomb getaway gracing each side of a 180g 12” virgin vinyl disc. looking to gain on his groups critical and commercial success from the early 1970s ew&f s main man maurice white brought in the legendary charles stepney, who had tutored him at chicago s chess records in the 1960s, as the co-producer and arranger on their incredible 1976 album spirit, which opened up with the formidable funk track getaway. co-written by guitarist, vocalist and songwriter bernard “beloyd” taylor (s.o.u.l.) and songwriter peter corbelenky around the theme of escapism and self-fulfilment, the primal urgency of getaway was the ideal composition for white to record with ew&f. white felt the song s energy and positive, uplifting lyrics matched the attitude and ethos of his group perfectly. as a result ew&f created a funk gem both musically and lyrically perfect for the dance floor.

voyage returns with the discovery of an until now unknown artist. unearthed from the hull of an abandoned discovery probe, the origins of ausländer are undisclosed and unlikely to be uncovered. the three artefacts revolve around what is only understood as ausländers theme, which is twice reinterpreted on the flip. no doubt made with machines, this wondrous exploration of thought, rhythm and undiscovered worlds is a welcomed addition to the voyage catalogue.

key vinyl don their scouting caps once again for another split ep featuring fledgling and debuting talents. first up is the plant worker. this french dj and producer isn’t exactly new to the game, but as the plant worker he’s been slowly journeying down harder, rawer trajectories—as the name may suggest. with a trio of eps out already, “iota 001” and “iota 002” continues his exploration into purer techno forms with two cuts of deep, probing, loopy floor material. then on the flip, key vinyl unveil the first works from masked newcomer transient x4. “lost in perceptions” is a jangling sic fi trip to techno’s bleak and pitch-black periphery, whilst “ways to space” sends its cosmic theme off for a spell in the basement, coming out as a monstrous peak-time send off.

where to now? records are proud to present beatrice dillons follow up release to the widely well received * blues dances*. this three track 12 inch sees beatrice step things up a gear in terms of intricacy, experimenting wildly to add to her already astute palette of timbre and rhythm. face a leads the record with the unmistakable skronk of saxophone cutting and jamming over the skeletal pulse of beatrices signature dubbed out techno landscape. initially the inclusion of saxophone acts as an aural abstraction or diversion to extract a little freedom from the pumping cavern of dark dub techno atmosphere punctuated with the mechanical juddering saw-bass, but as the piece develops and we become deep into the groove the inclusion of wild sax snorts trips us up and become the focus itself as new levels of complex melodic and rhythmic detail become apparent within this otherwise structurally obedient space. taking its cues from rabih beaini, miles davis * big fun* era, dresvn and keith hudson, undoubtably face a is a compelling, complex trip… heads down but arms flailing. face b continues the theme but takes the listener far deeper into the cavern. here the concern is more the effects of space within song, a moment where beatrice allows herself to move away from the floor to find a little more room for playful experimentation. the saxophone is further treated with a plethora of effects to compliment the array of dub signals that scatter and skip around the basin. the record closes with sonnier (walk in the light) which strangely somehow manages to feel jazzier in its components, even in comparison to a pair of tracks riffing on a manipulated free-jazz sax part. it sounds strangely unsure of its world, adding to this whole loosely slung, loping feel which somehow fits amongst the stern, brooding, and efficient synth play. beatrice masterfully manages to create a piece here that grows in intensity without ever increasing in pace or texture, every drop is intended to stir the listener a little more than the last. theres a sense throughout all the pieces of having rhythm imposed or even inflicted upon the listener but this is certainly not a conflict of ideas… there is optimism, harmony and above all - wild groove nestled within beatrices world of mutant shuffle.

continuing its ongoing theme of releasing records influenced by our vast universe, deep space, spirit and consciousness, meander presents the scorched earth ep by konrad black, a selection of advanced 101 techno infused break-beat science. with his sparse, yet highly considered discography, mr. blacks first output for meander draws key inspiration from recent earth-bound meteorites and the blinding light that follows.

perhaps it is something in the water or just plain vodka, we really have no idea but one thing is for sure - there is something special about those moscow disco heads. they sure know how to find a perfect beat and re-edit it to perfection. after lay-far it is now time for arsenii to step into the basic fingers arena. both sides on this 12 are filled with jazz-funk and library infused disco at its best. *allegria* sounds like bob james is jamming with the headhunters and on the flip *turbo* with its generous use of synthesizers almost has an outer space theme. essential indulgence for disco heads & connoisseurs everywhere.

released for the first time on vinyl is max richter’s emotive and minimal score to damon lindelof’s tv series about a post-apocalyptic global event where 2% of the world’s population disappears without explanation. richter’s approach explores the feelings of the protagonist’s family, the garveys, through intimate, small scale music. he tackles this psychological landscape by bringing a ritual quality to the score, while themes of departure and loss are represented by a sense of sonic decay, relying on the instrumentation of a few sustained tones on pianos, harps and celesta. max richter is a classically trained composer that defies boundaries. trained at the royal academy of music and finishing his studies under the tutelage of avant-garde composer luciano berio in florence, richter’s career has followed many paths. his musical output ranges from ballets (wayne macgregor’s infra), reinventions of classical works (vivaldi’s four seasons), collaborations with the future sound of london, roni size and vashti bunyan to writing scores for film and tv (waltz with bashir, lost and found, last days on mars) and solo work (memoryhouse, the blue notebooks, 24 postcards in full colour).
