presence unknown is a new vinyl and digital label curated by longtime producer and dj, neil keating aka controlled weirdness. neil has been behind the decks and deeply involved in all aspects of club and underground sound system culture since the early eighties. he has released his music on numerous underground labels and performed all over the world, from plush clubs to dirty warehouses. worth a read are a couple of published articles by neil regarding his experiences on the dance floor of underground clubs in london and new york in the eighties. see links at the bottom of this page for these as well as a detailed biography and discography. there is also a link to a recent 40-minute interview with distant planet tv that explores his cultured rave history. the second release on presence unknown contains four future-retro house grooves from controlled weirdness crafted using a variety of analogue and digital hardware in his south london studio.

the album was recorded at the height of the first wave of interest in brazilian music in london in the 1990s. joyce and a group led by husband drummer tutty moreno had just been brought to the uk for the first time ever by gilles peterson and brazilian music obsessive joe davis (and future head of far out records) and performing to over 2.000 new young fans.

2017 war eine stürmische zeit für die band. zwei uk-touren, sowohl als headliner als auch mit the amazons gefolgt vom glorreichen video zur single »bad advice«. darüber hinaus hat die band für guns n roses das legendäre slane castle eröffnet, ihr download-debüt im castle donington gemacht und erfolgreich die otherkin-flamme in holland und frankreich am leben erhalten. erst vor kurzem hat sich metallicas lars ulrich in seiner beats1 radio show für die band eingesetzt.

sterns edits returns after the sell-out success of its debut edition with another two catalogue reworks from ben gomori. this time he turns his attention to burkina faso s much-loved taxi-driver-turned-singer, amadou balaké. balaké ( porcupine in mandinka) is burkina faso s proudest musical export, and in 2013 he recorded his final album before passing away: in conclusion. the record saw him revisit some of his most popular tracks from his remarkable 50-year career, backed by an eight-piece burkinabé band who took the country s traditional sounds and brought them into a contemporary light. gomori retains the essence of the original recordings which were mostly captured in one take and marries them to vigorous afro-house stylings. bar konon mousso (musicien c est pas quelqu un) in which balaké tells of a bar lady being unimpressed by his profession, gets a gentle push towards the modern dancefloor, its wonderful sax lines resplendent. massa kamba is taken for a drive down the more traditional route, with commanding drums bolstering the original grooves and a marvelous triple harmony brass section at its core. balakes freewheeling style suits the hypnotic feel of the edits to a tee. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and london s ben gomori.

finally here we are with the fourth release on last drop records, signed by the london-based stavrogin. collectors takes a more subdued approach from his debut on australian label 3bs, focusing on ampdriven ambient textures and digital experimentation. sixty acres is a juddering mass of static textures and penetrative low end, forcing itself to a crumbled close. title track collectors is something like the afterglow. weary and destitute, the track stumbles through heatwave soaked atmospheres, fragmented voices stuttering like a malfunctioning android. are these actual miles? is perhaps the most direct, with its tremors of noise punctuated by a rhythmic pulse. this is a feature italian duo ichinen have capitalised on in their closing remix, reducing the track to a warbling, dead-eyed drum workout.

uk producer laurence guy delivers his debut for mule musiq: three house not house grooves en-larged with a deep musicality. so far the boy from london got one album and six eps on such labels like church, rose or cin cin under his wings. all his three tunes for mule feature a piano that spreads deeply haunting melodies. combined with house rhythms and a warm oscillating atmosphere, he managed to arrange an ep that reminds equally on the musical art of producers like andres or portable. deep house beyond the clichés, charged with bewitching melodies and a heartiness that has the power to stay for good.

head honcho of 4plae records, adam monti aka admnti has created 3 sublime tracks, portraying the more uplifting, housey side of what he represents. following this, the london based trio wax on mare st. have supplied their take on adams highrise showcasing their very particular, yet similar sound within their remix. here we have the birth of the euphorbia ep!

after living in africa, south america, then london, ohes first made a name in paris by playing analog lives with the dynamiterie crew, first as they resident artist and then as the new artistic director of their new label. it is while playing live in the french city of pau that he met behzad & amarou. they shared the same views on the perception of music, thus created a particular affinity. after this event, they chose to collaborate under the boa moniker (behzad ¹ ohes- amarou), and invited him to release his new ep on bear records. in this first ep, ohes moves between a slightly dystopic robotic house, sharp discoid grooves and melancholic exoticism. this new adventure present a rich diversity in these four personal tracks, influenced by his numerous travels.

(for the use of these hidden hands music in the brutal raw worldwide trailer). now, from their headquarters at londons live music epicentre village underground, they have launched their latest project: the research label. this new label will showcase the artists they represent by challenging them to push the boundaries of their production process to new levels.

having spent seven years in his adopted home of london steadily crafting a hazy, ambiguous identity that fuses ambient onto drone and techno, tom hang (aka lobster theremin boss jimmy asquith) finally steps up to the plate with “to be held in a non position” - a melded one-take lp that explores extended themes of isolation, loneliness, personal loss, disconnection and reconnection with reality and (self)-identity.
through his long-lost label tidy bedroom - on which “to be held in a non position” will be released - tom hang engages in a more introspective path, exploring sonic territories that find an echo with dislocated past experiences, pushing physical and psychic boundaries to get at the crux of intimacy.

this is a previously unreleased sun ra solo piano improvisation recorded in june 1990 during an interview with presenter and dj jez nelson at the studios of jazz fm in london.
