andrzej nowak is a polish early computer music composer who never found proper place in official contemporary music world. tracks produced between 1987 and 1994 as a score for never screened animation movies (the producer didn’t like them). lines of simple sounds, interrupted by primitive electronic trumpet and other fake instruments. are you sure it’s a film score? what was the thing that producer didn’t like? weird harmonies or too much rhythm?

after spending the majority of 2009 in hollywood, chanes briefly returned home to finish up songs for what would become his 2010 release, an experimentation in instrumentation. the 15-track tape, presented by house shoes, exposed us all to the nomadic 21-year-old producer from canton, michigan. chanes would spend the next two years working between home and brooklyn, before relocating to arizona, where he would release his follow up project, renegade hands, (insect records 2013). presented again by shoes, hands solidified chanes as one of the most promising young producers in the country.
fast-forward to 2016, and at 27, this self-titled debut takes us circa 2007 - 2009 with the soul-chopping salad days of his mother s basement, through the alternative sampling williamsburg, brooklyn sessions of 2010. if the melancholy desert psychedelia of his isolated four years in perpetual southwestern summer gives us a glimpse into his growing electronic influences, then the angst of his winter homecomings are hiding under the aggressive parka weather beats that first caught the attention of detroit’s underground.
fittingly, chanes’ debut lp comes full circle, finishing the album back in the place it all started and releasing it with long-time supporter house shoes and street corner music.

firstly, a huge thanks to everyone for supporting us so far - 2016 has seen the dext label continuing to go from strength to strength, with our callahan and mella dee ep s backed with remixes from hodge and endian which have been been super well received. now for the third ep of the year from our resident comedian bodyjack. bodyjack has been an integral part of dext since he remixed dubspeeka on our 2nd release and headlined our label takeover of privilege in ibiza last summer. we are very excited about his return to the label with this 3-tracker (and our first full solo artist ep!), and we think you re going to dig this... the title track cobra effect is one of those tracks you aren t going forget in a hurry. intense and brooding, we are hard-pushed to categorise this, but layers of sinister bass coupled with dark, driving snares and eerie synth work culminate masterfully, making this the perfect dext track. hydra effect lifts the vibe with a straight up peak-time house jam with a sting in the tail. a raw-but-infectious bassline winds along under bodyjack s signature killer drum programming, before blasting off with something you aren t going to expect. rounding the ep off is slowine effect: a proper dancehall workout (reminiscent of bodyjack s earlier work) and a real cross-genre party starter. the most upbeat of the 3 tracks, this again takes all the elements of what we love about the music from the past and cleverly works them into something special for the rave. and that s not all for bodyjack on dext this year - he will be back with a one-off ltd record called -hot shot-, backed with a very special remixer...but more on that soon!

part 1/2 of his amazing album. intelligent communication. since 1967, astronomers have been receiving and cataloging very precisely timed radio pulses coming from sources they call pulsars. they have long assumed these to be natural sources, exotic spinning stars that emit laser-like radio beams that sweep through space much like lighthouse signal sequences. highly regular flashes and complex signal ordering are produced through intelligent modulation of their beam s intensity and direction of polarization. more significantly, through their seemingly purposeful geometrical alignments, pulsars appear to be conveying a coherent message. are these beacons from an intelligent origin? and are they warning beacons to warn us against the next shockwave that comes of the active galactic nucleus ore want they attack us? it might be prudent to consider whether we are talking about friends or foes.....mike storm.
