possession records proudly present the new album by soft riot, entitled -the outsider in the mirrors-. soft riot is the stylised musical alter-ego of jjd, canadian by birth and an ex-resident of london and sheffield, now based in glasgow (so not unfamiliar with sites of post-industrial decay!). with over twenty years of playing in various post-punk and synth-punk bands, he has been crafting the sound of soft riot since the early turn of the decade, releasing a slew of albums across a multitude of labels and touring obsessively around europe and beyond. with -the outsider in the mirrors-, his sixth full-length, he has found a new home for his sound on possession records, a fledgling glasgow imprint founded by jjd, claudia nova (aka hausfrau) and andy brown (ubre blanca). their aim is to bring together their pool of musical talents and provide a more permanent home for their future creative endeavours, whether it be music, video or otherwise and to experiment with what it is to be a -label- in the ever evolving 21st century. future projects and releases will see them getting a select group of their peers and friends involved in possession s focused vision, locally or from further afield.

fist & shout is the debut release from glasgow band leatherette - currently now known as total leatherette - and the first to be released on domestic exile. recorded at the now infamous green door studios, the album is a raw, visceral interpretation of instrumental post-punk, no wave, drone and industrial, complete with a fully immersive and foreboding gothic atmosphere.

tmpz002 of temporize records is an ep from glasgow affiliate dam-ru, drawing on themes of gnosticism, occultism, cosmology and automatism, dam-ru displays his attempts at transcendence through sound, and delves deep into the subconscious, to a world within worlds.
he crafts complex yet warm, organic electronic music that flirts with ambient, dub and experimental sounds. with “too many voices”, his debut ep, he explores a far eastern, mystical theme in producing 4 tracks that wouldn’t feel out of place in an epic film score.

as huntleys + palmers events has drawn to a close, 2018 will see a big focus in releasing some brilliant new music and introducing some amazing new artists. first up is wheelman straight out of glasgow and fresh off the back of his debut for our studio barnhus buddies. to our shame, it took a kornel kovacs trip to rubadub to bring to our attention a real talent who was under our now the whole time! hed even been to a bunch of our parties and wed never made the connection. righting this wrong, we promptly hit him up for music to include on a clyde built compilation and they were so good, we designated the bulk of these tracks to this release 5 absolute belters!

robert rental was the stage name of robert donnachie (1952?2000), a british pioneer of post-punk, diy, and industrial music. originally from port glasgow, scotland, he moved to the south of england with thomas leer in the late 1970s where he met glenn michael wallis. glenn was recording music with the group heute and leaving to start his solo projects nkvd and konstruktivists. both were heavily involved with throbbing gristle and the industrial records crew. in the summer of 1979, robert invited glenn to his studio in battersea to jam. robert on guitar and glenn on an edp wasp synthesizer. for each session that summer they would play for about 40 minutes, maybe longer, stoned. robert suggested they record it, many times erasing and over recording one session for the next. the music had no titles, as they were never intended to be released. on these recordings, robert enjoyed playing like robert fripp of king crimson, while glenn channeled wolfgang flur of kraftwerk. influenced by krautrock bands like can, neu!, cluster/harmonia, as well as terry riley and brian eno the duo forged a unqiue brand of industrial music. tape loops and synthesizer sounds played backward conjure dark ambient moods. all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the lp is housed in a jacket that features a drawing by robert rental from glenn?s archives as well as a handwritten note from robert to glenn. each copy includes 2 photo postcards featuring a transcription of robert?s letter and liner notes from glenn wallis.

in it’s original form waiting for you to call secured radio plays on 6 music, radio 1, jazz fm and various regional specialist shows, plus the track got playlisted on rinse fm. these remixes will appeal more to club djs and will fit in with house and nu-disco sets from a broad section of djs. it’s been a while since any artist has secured a remix from derrick carter and the hmd boys are thrilled that the world famous chicago dj has honoured them with a remix of their debut single - and he certainly doesn’t disappoint. dc is on top form here with his epic mid-tempo house interpretation that keeps the soul of the original track whilst giving it some extra dance floor dynamism. with nods to classic 90’s remixes from frankie knuckles and david morales this is one for the connoisseurs and ravers alike. the hmd boys with the help of luke solomon create a dubbed out and more pacy version of the original on the flip side with their remix and they report that it’s been going down a storm in their sets from output in new york to recent gigs in glasgow, berlin and manchester. with a brand new track featuring the vocals of amy douglas set for february and a radio 1 essential mix to be aired on december 23rd, the hmd sound is going from a steady canter to a gallop.

let your brain slowly melt to the delightful sounds of dima disk. having first heard their music via the palace x bronze skate video a year or so ago, we did a bit of digging and it turned out to be by a duo called dima disk, one half of whom was an old glasgow pal called ragnar and robert nikolajev from tallinn s legendary club lekker. you may have heard their recent ripper on porridge bullet. having been fans of the shit coming out of estonia for a good few years and also having a thing for releasing music from our glasgow connections we felt that this needed to come out as a rad 12-.

octo champ releases his second ep of 2017, following up on not quite there yet, which received major exposure from thump and dj mag. this upfront four-track release is a selection of dance floor ready disco and house and sits boldly apart from a lot of other music within these genres. dj support so far from dan shake and titeknots amongst others. taking inspiration from the more exotic corners of the musical spectrum the ep leads with the upbeat make heaven and its conga rhythms, vocal hooks and electronic patterns. cmi is slower and moves further into the groove whilst lacuna is the ep s funkiest cut, featuring a killer bass hook, percussion, guitar chops, claps and more vocals to carry it along. closing with a second four to the four track diametric leads with an elastic, acoustic bassline, synth pads and you ve guessed it: more vocal hooks. octo champ is one-half of dj/promoter duo rigid disco, running parties and radio shows across both london and glasgow and booking rising stars such as tom blip, fyi chris, hector plimmer and the rye wax crew. octo champ has remixed soundway s flamingods and chpln as well as contributing to the cdr x dimensions sounds 2016 project. most recently, his music was picked up by let s go swimming who released the not quite there yet ep.

andi and david first met in a forest beside a psychedelic castle in the wild west of scotland and soon bonded over a love of wrong speeders, balearic gems hidden in plain sight and the odder side of the dancefloor before djing together just moments after andi was unraveled from a burning tarpaulin. a firm friendship and fun partnership was born. hailing from mancunia but for sometime an export to the usa, andi, for many years was one of the great things about new york city. a charming, low-key individual, a great, great dj and a graceful presence in the land of the overhyped and ego driven. andi held down the musical supervision of rock star games and was responsible for a lot of great music getting out to the gaming masses. he was a vital member of body and soul for the best part of 15 years, delivering infamous warm up sets for danny krivit, joaquin joe claussell and françois k, pedigree vibes... david, a music lover since birth, a record collector for more than quarter of a century and a reputation for being the first on the floor at any party. db s transition from dancer to dj didn t take too long and his selections of rare disco, oddball gems and panglobal pandemonium have seen him play back rooms, basements, festivals and freakouts throughout the land, whether running his own parties in glasgow or playing further afield alongside the likes of young marco, jayda g and moodymann.

the 2nd release from i walked by night comes firing out of the southside of glasgow. a young man by the name of the burrell connection has been flying under the radar for a few years now... a perth native / glasgow immigrant has been making music since he was 15, his first release came via west end communications (003) in 2015. since then he has released most recently with craigie knowes on the amazing 2nd annual war child fundraiser along with legowelt, shanti celeste, neville watson and many more. southside was made with a juno 6, yamaha dx21, roland tr8, korg minilogue and twisting samples and recording most tracks in one take with little post editing. this ep oozes raw energy and shows off a delicate deft touch. after debuting at the warehouse project in 2016, the burrell connection will be producing his first live show in 2017.

emotional rescue starts its 5th year by shining a light on one of europe s best underground 80s label in spain s auxilio de ciento. their terra incognita volumes i and ii collated an international mix of synth-pop, new wave, world and industrial sounds to a small but appreciative following. released in 1985 and 1986, the volumes have become highly regarded and rightly sought after, finding a place in discerning playlists from london to amsterdam and dusseldorf to glasgow. here, taking a premise of avoiding the songs unearthed on other recent reissues, is a unique album itself. starting with denis mpunga & paul k s esoteric criola, a fusion of fourth world ideals and poly-rhythmic funk. the music of mal, bene gesserit and la caida de la casa usher, however, soon highlight that the decade also belonged to dark, minimal synth as to shiny balearic ideals. the inclusion of hector zazou with bony biyake and their contribution komba, is a fitting continuation from their cult noir et blanc lp before, things continue with us avant-artist danny alias and his humorous big brother -response- to laurie anderson s superman o. image pour image loose indie-pop and the inclusion of seminal beast of burden lead again to a zazou contribution, this time in his collaborative stranger in a new light, before the compilation eclectically ends with the dadaesque lakota and the post punk dub of instead of s closer, angels

optimo trax 30 celebrates a double 30 year anniversary: the original release date of “rejekto” and 30 years since twitch started dj’ing. in 1987, twitch, who wasn’t known as twitch yet, picked up a copy of “rejekto” at glasgow’s then numero uno import shop, 23rd precinct. he was smitten.

so low is an occasional night in glasgow run by iona fortune, jd twitch, katie shambles and becky marshall. so low is strictly for creatures of the night and plays music that could perhaps be described by the words dark waves / cold waves / minimal synthesis / maximal industrial / lo-nrg / forgotten flemish goth bands, teutonic apocalyptic beats +++ it is now also a label, administered by optimo music. after debuting with happy meals “full ashram devotional ceremony” album, here is the first 12” release, “now & then”, a various artists 4-track ep featuring two tracks from now and two from then.
the 12” comes housed in a bespoke hand printed fold out poster sleeve inserted into a plastic sleeve with screen printed text on the plastic, designed and created by katie shambles. due to the extremely labour intensive nature of the sleeve design this will be a strictly limited edition of 300 copies.

with comparisons being made to psykick warriors of gaia, cyclobe and insanlars kime ne this ones definitely making waves amongst fans of.....well....whatever sort of music this is. komodo kolektif is a loose collective of veteran multi-instrumentalists based not in indonesia as one might expect with such a name, but glasgow, scotland, their name being a reference to the indonesian gamelan instruments featured in their compositions. the instruments used (saron, gender, kempul) belong to local gamelan ensemble gamelan naga mas of which two of the musicians have been full-time members for around a decade while the other members are also loosely affiliated and have appeared as guest musicians on various one-off performances and who are themselves well-known musicians in their own rights.

thomas leer is an innovative electronic musician from port glasgow, scotland. he began singing for a local band at age 13, and was writing his own music by 18. by 1977, he had moved to london, where he fronted pressure, a clash­-esque punk group with fellow experimental scottish musician robert rental. after hearing kraftwerk, leer became interested in synthesizers – not long after, he was exploring the experimental techniques of eno, zappa, beefheart, faust, and can. in 1978, thomas released his first single, private plane / international , on his own oblique records that we reissued in 2015. 1979 is a 14-song collection spread across two pieces of vinyl clocking in at 70 minutes. leer says, 1979 was a great year for making music.

scotland s premier electro alchemist is back on shipwrec and this time flying solo with five shards of sharpened machine music. beats rain down in solid sheets, a hail of drum patterns pelt and pound. acid scorn, speeding snares and scorched sound roar and rumble in the menacing -days of rage.- the 12- hisses and howls, sending forth a searing line of percussion as gears crank and grown. -glasgow to detroit- is just as fiery, scorn and sparks leaping off burning bars. aggression is always at the surface, and behind the razor rhythms lurks a palpable paranoia, as in -daisy cutter- or -uprising.- the only respite comes with the complex and textured -stones and sticks.- harsh mechanics from an industrial heartland.

iona fortune is a composer and producer from glasgow and presents the “tao of i” album as her debut release. inspired by eastern philosophy and slated to be the first in an 8 album series exploring all the symbols of the i ching, her music is influenced by oriental sounds and features a palette of instruments that includes the guzheng, gamelan and synthi aks. the overall effect is a singular and beguiling sound that loosely fits in with the fourth world concept imagined by jon hassell, and indeed iona fortune has also contributed a track to optimo music’s new fourth world compilation “miracle steps”. the initial vinyl edition will come on a white vinyl pressing with inside sleeve and original artwork by iona fortune.

ltd repress , for our final record of the year, we turn to glasgow’s man of the year - denis sulta. like a good chunk of the numbers family, he has earnt his stripes working at the coalface of techno aka rubadub. he has crafted two excellent twelves for our bare-chested cousins at dixon avenue basement jams and is beginning to carve himself out a reputation as a dj of some repute, expertly blending in the bangers with sulta-certified weirdness. denis is part of a new wave of glaswegian artists who are doing amazing things and whose music is continuously exciting us. ‘it’s only real’ created by sulta during a burst of inspiration one sunday, takes us back to a time when techno was intricately melodic but still kicked hard in the club. made with only the purest of intentions and a dedication to the art of moving heads and feet. support from four tet, john talabot, joy orbison, kowton and loads more quality djs.

known more for their dubby kosmische and psychedelic post-disko, glasgow label invisible inc seem to be wandering closer to the realms of the nightclub dancefloor these days. not that anyone s complaining. with recent outings by strange culture and sordid sound system taking the lead, this one by budapest s bal5000 is quite possibly their most dancefloor friendly release yet. all four cuts inhabit a space somewhere at the very edge of house but are steeped in soaringly cosmic italo-esque synth lines and bubbling, motorik arpeggios reminiscent of early 80s minimal.....the result is a real sonic treat: hypnotically transcendant, yet beautifully melodic, and all solidly underpinned by some seriously low-end sub-bass, tight rhythms and pistol-sharp snares.

elektrik is a deep, emotional piece of melodious techno that can be relished at home as well as on a massive dancefloor. dark chords, enticing bassline coupled to downy reverb progressively unfurls vince watson’s flair, grasping the audience for a 9-minute journey to a crepuscular, hypnotic and colourful universe.
the b-side highlights one of astropolis record’s cornerstones, frenchie techno activist madben. restyling vince watson’s climb on a dancefloor-powered techno track, whirling and effusive, tenderly shady and mysterious, madben brings the audience to an intense flickering excursion tinged with a smooth groove.

london producer bxentric releases his latest ep sakura fall . this is the third release from his own label nanda records, following the well-received patch valley and chrome eps. prior to launching his own label, bxentric released on eskimo recordings and glasgow underground. in november 2015 patch valley was included in maceo plex s essential mix for radio 1 and was supported by the likes of barnt, job jobse and bicep.
the a-side of bxentric s latest release includes sakura fall which is a dark heater followed by a contrasting downtempo track afon . the b-side offers a melodious matt karmil version (pnn, beats in space, studio barnhus) of sakura fall . bxentric s lead track has already received airplay on b.traits friday night bbc radio 1 show and support from joris voorn, baikal, andre hommen and kollektiv turmstrasse.

following on from the very successful re-issue of the ‘little i ep” by fresh and low, foul & sunk records are proud to announce the release of fresh and low’s seminal deep house classic ‘wind on water’. originally released on chicago’s guidance imprint in 1996 this record put the glasgow producers firmly on the deep house map with it’s soulful blend of sparse beats, emotional pads and funk-laden fat bass-lines. re-mastered and re-cut with care and love, this release still sounds contemporary and yet retains that special vibe from the time it was created. a true house music classic.

having been rivals on the football pitch as teenagers, a chance encounter many years later - djing at an international windsurfing festival - cumulated in a back to back set that kicked off the italia90 collaboration. putting the footballing differences aside, italia90 grew out of a shared love of quality house music that was influenced greatly by glasgow s close relationship with chicago and institutions such as the sub club that brought these house heroes close to home.

insane hyper hybrid combo of wave/house/techno by murray cy of glasgow. the cy stands for -contort yourself- the label he runs which bridges the gaps between lost sounds of the past and contemprary noise makers, this ep displaying the producers take on the sound perfectly. all four tracks move in their own way from mid-tempo heaviness to more peak time fare. this is the rough back alley stuff you ve been warned about!

deep site vinylized return with a special 4 track v/a release for those late summer parties, marc cotterell opens thing up with the organ-powered garage infected sunset vibes. synthesizer solos dominate the view while subtle rhodes and b-3 phrases meander in the funky framework. next up welcoming an old deep house favourite from glasgow calum walker of fresh and low delivering the beautifully understated string theory which builds like a cinematic theme tailor made for dance floors. synths pulses and dramatic themes intermingle with subtle string lines laying boldly within driving rhythms. the flip side brings a return to deep site for addex who comes on smooth and strong with blazing, utilizing solid drums and bubbling percussive edges. the synth pads build slowly in juxtaposition with the cloud stabs and analogue melodic flourishes. closing with erotic soul from even furtuna featuring the writers poet is a chicago deep styled gem with its gorgeously stated poetry flowing through a bed of bass, organ, and builds. the main infectious riff plays well off of the verse breaks. enjoy!

nice price deal !!! the title of this ep sorta says it all. its quite an important release for the label. glasgow musical connections all around! when most people think of optimo music, they think of the long-running club night in glasgow >optimo (espacio)<, which ran for 12 years every sunday…headed by jd twitch and jg wilkes. label honcho jd twitch is extremely proud to be releasing naum gabo … as this is the studio project of his optimo partner, jonnie wilkes, along with james savage. jonnie and james (formally releasing three 12 inches simply as >naum< on kompakts mighty speicher series) have been active on the scene for a while now. as well as releasing the original music on kompakt, mule, eskimo, dissident, and tinae they have provided some wonderful naum gabo reworks for hot chip, simian mobile disco, franz ferdinand, snow patrol, psychonauts and so many more… twitch has long been a fan of naum gabo so it is a bit of a coup to be getting this fantastic release: two covers of two mighty scottish acts from the late 70s/early 80s.
