the berlin-based producer is kicking off his label with a four-track single. while he is perhaps not as name-checked as some of the hardware hawking house heads of modern times, arttu snellman has been working hard at gritty box jams for a good few years now. he first appeared under his arttu guise in 2011 with the nuclear funk and fear diluted singles on royal oak and philpot respectively, and then proceeded to wheel out tunes for 4 lux and chiwax over the ensuing years. prior to the tough-edged pump of his current ventures, you could find snellman indulging in a more laptop-centric kind of practice under the name lump. this more minimalistic, glitchy house fodder could be found on labels such as karloff, morris/audio and süd electronic amongst many others. back in the here and now though, arttu was last spotted on clone jack for daze earlier this year with the rave dogz 12”, and next up he’s taking matters into his own hands. existing fans of arttu will be more than pleased with the heavyweight, crunchy tackle that inhabits cyblo01. this is dynamic business with same heft found on previous releases from snellman, mixed in with the cheeky flair that has always marked his productions out in a crowded marketplace.

sing with me: much in the same vein of the mannheim house sound made popular by artists like johnny d, nick curly, christian burkhardt etc. bretts gives us a deep but driving track centered around an african boy singing. brett chops the sample up to create a choir of ethereal voices to support the boys singing. as the track progresses it takes a left turn into weirdville through some dramatic synth tweaks & sweeps. this track is perfect for anyone who likes to dance standing up, with their head down and first firmly in the air. speaking japanese: many people will tell you learning to speak japanese is one of the most difficult languages to learn, and theyre right. lucky for you, brett has done all the work by translating his message into sound. the core inspiration for this track is based on a sample from a song by get physical owner and artist mandy. they were kind enough to let brett use the sample and run wild with it. the result is 8 minutes and 12 seconds of over driven 909s, rolling bass lines and a pad so thick you need a fork to eat it. all of this keeps the calm while frantic chatter and out of this world fxs take you to a japanese after party somewhere in shibuya.

fifty first recordings was created in 1994 out of a small but very productive studio in london called state 51 using the down time and the very talented engineers who had been brought together for state 51 s existing clients. state 51 was the go to studio for the likes of x-press 2, sharp, amalgamation of soundz. the engineers we worked with included mark woolford, james brown, james reynolds & mark yardley. fifty first recordings soon found a name for itself and was very quickly at the forefront of the new generation of uk garage music. we produced and released music in the 90s, for over 7 years, with the likes of tuff jam etc. and later went to develop other imprints such as konnect / test press / unda vybe / spread love / tick etc., some in partnership with producers and managed artists.

after showcasing the debut releases from the high on wye quintet (magic mountain high, soulphiction and steevio) and monoak, the freerotation label returns with a various artists 12” featuring four more artists intrinsically linked by the annual festival. anthony child, aka surgeon, has been a regular fixture since first appearing at freerotation in 2011. his recent exploration of modular synthesis and use of the buchla music easel has found a home in the ambient yurt at the festival, and equally has manifested in album projects such as 2015’s electronic recordings from maui jungle vol 1. “unconscious fearless determination” follows on from this more experimental, less dancefloor-focused side to child’s work, while still pulsing with the techno fundamentals that quickly defined him back in the mid ‘90s. duckett hails from north wales, and has been a key part of the freerotation fabric since the beginning of the event. after some releases on mindtours, mindyourhead and sthlmaudio back in the mid-‘00s, his music has started to reach a new audience through releases on untilmyheartstops and a clutch of lauded live performances. “breaks my heart when i remember that day” captures the alien synthesis and emotional heft that singles duckett out as such a remarkable artist. steevio is the co-founder of freerotation and mindtours records, responsible for a huge swathe of techno releases reaching back to the ‘90s. as well as his releases on mindtours, he has recently appeared on untilmyheartstops and in collaboration with pev on schmorgabsord, and is set to appear on russ gabriel’s new label rivers of groove. with its expressive swells of off-kilter melody and snaking drum lines, “pendulum” continues the thread of exploration steevio has been following on his journey into experimental modular techno. tom ellis has been prolifically issuing forth material in a soul-enriched space in between house, techno and funk for more than ten years. from running the acclaimed trimsound label to releasing albums and singles on telegraph, archipel, hartchef discos and more recently ethereal sound to name but a few, tom’s recorded work and immersive live performances continue to reach out to new moods and timbres. “as a take” finds tom at his most reflective, layering on dubby effects and organic instrumentation in a truly meditative end to the ep.

saft welcomes nortasun to it s expanding roster of artists. with not too much info being available about the artist, the music should do the talking. nortasun comes up with a sample drenched ep that consists out of swell basslines, mind expanding chords and outlandish percussion works. untitled 1 opens up with a carefully placed disco sample that hovers over the rhythms very nicely. the percussion section and the ascending chords serve the overal ambiance while nortasun plays with the extended loop pattern that maintains of interest. untitled 2 serves as a very deep but functional voyage into tribal territory. a vary of percussion sets in and smartly exchanges tones with fx cuts. on the b side fudge fingas debuts on saft with an atmospheric beast of a remix for untitled 1 that constantly grows and cleverly uses vocal cuts that change up the original atmosphere and makes the overall a very broad work of house music. the stevie wonder like clava hit + piano solo s that come in when the remix progresses are all in courtesy of the edinburghian producer himself.

following on from last years exceptional ‘obsession ep’ from art crime is a budding young talent by the name of will lister. originally from lyme regis, will moved up to london to attend goldsmiths university and in his spare time he helps us out behind the counter here at the shop. when he’s not here at the shop you can also hear him playing records on his balamii radio show or his monthly club night, ‘the aten’. ‘the phantom ep’ is his production debut and we’re extremely happy to be putting it out on our main imprint. the title track opens up the ep with heavily reverbed pads, echoed claps, crunchy percussion and repetitive synth stabs that all work together to create spaced-out atmosphere that’s full of twist and turns. flipping over to the b-side, ‘after the light’ picks up the pace with a driving high-hat rhythm and full-bodied kicks that underpin warm piano keys and smooth synth lines. ‘agency’ closes proceedings by turning up the intensity to full with a masterclass in building tension.

one of the founding members of apollonia, shonky was responsible for his label’s very first release back in 2012 with ‘the minneapolis touch’. outside of working on the trio’s debut lp ‘tour a tour’, shonky has been relatively quiet on the solo tip. here on apollonia’s 25th release we’re treated to four new cuts from the berlin-based parisian, kicking off with plombie&#768,,re (plumber in english). shonky injects a variety of unusual sounds, which revolve around a jaunty bassline, while voices dip in and out of the background, repeating the mantra ‘house music’ together with other difficult to decipher vocal clips. the track has a catchy rhythm that bounces along with aplomb. up next ‘house me’ is a sleazy, mischievous cut with a deadly low end and a seductive vocal that urges you to ‘house me’. as the bassline rumbles, high pitched effects add a hypnotic element to the track. badboy business.on the b-side we have ‘perchee’, which is powered by cleverly layered percussion, which is almost ‘live’ sounding. another one of those ‘shonky’ basslines gets us straight into the groove, with utterly contagious beats – this is one to shake the dance floor down its core. finally, ‘cosmopolis’ has that inner city realness flowing through with the chatter of a street corner in the background, a killer b-line and one of those classic vocal samples that is oh so familiar and gets you nodding your head as soon as you hear it. and there it is, four dance floor cuts with plenty of depth and groove in true shonky style… c est formidable!

our latest looking for mushrooms ep comes to us from a collaboration between long time dirt crew resident tigerskin and gifted jazz pianist and composer grambow. we first heard from grambow when his fluid key stylings featured on tigerskins faint in 2015. the title track is a suspenseful and moody journey, lead by live double bass from feature artist das eb. building in intensity with tigerskins warm production and steady percussive instrumentation until grambows live lead on a gritty synth growls in over the top. a true modern electronic classic as far as we are concernred. tsukiji is a playful deep house groover. balmy tuned percussion and shaken highs roll along under the light hearted piano which cruises along throughout the whole tropically touched endeavour. this track has party written all over it! octocat is a tougher italo disco tainted work out, tightly programmed live and analogue percussive elements push along, while wailing keys lick over a tenacious grunting bass. you can really taste and feel the long studio sessions the guys had to compose this great track. it is so much more than generic dance music. red fox is a divine culmination of the pairs compositional prowess and dance music knowhow. a cinematic and spirited house track that glides and glistens via delicate piano, plucky percussive riffs, bright strings and woodwinds. we are very honoured to release this outstanding musical release by tigerskin and grambow.

deep love is the first vinyl release by stefano pozzi, dj producer and musician. it’s very difficult to define his sound: his creative process led him to merge several genres in a very original way. the artist shows us a great talent combining different electronic styles from deep house to soulful house, new jazz and chill out music. stefano is also a guitar player. with his releases, he shows us how to bring guitar sounds together with electronic music in a brilliant way. in this 12 inch ep, that could be defined as deep house, the artist has worked to merge various elements of house music: the warm sound of a moog organ with a deep drum kick, the use of hypnotic and rhythmic vocal samples, the presence of many jazz and soul contaminations due to the acoustic guitar.

physical therapy makes his debut on spencer parker s work them records with a medley of club focused techno cuts. growing up in new jersey, physical therapy later moved to chicago, then new york, before finally settling in berlin where he s quickly built a profile as a stand out dj/producer. baktadust comes in the form of two tracks: the fast tempo main mix that combines peppy piano riffs and metallic effects, as well as a slower fried mix featuring cleaner chords and a sultry bassline. push me then demonstrates robust percussion, a rumbling low-end and eerie tremolo atmospherics before shadowy echoes and off kilter kicks conclude the release in spasm.

monoton ‘monotonprodukt 02’, also known as mp02, is the debut album of austrian electronic maverick konrad becker. out in 1980 it was a precursor of the minimal techno dub sound that was starting to be popular more than 15 years after. the album has been reissued by desire a couple of years ago and a new pressing is in the work. anyway it’s time to launch a remix ep with new (and not so new) producers giving crédit to the work of the austrian master. on the a side we find 3 new artists paying their dues : sergie rezza, whose debut album out on desire was critically acclaimed, abdulla rashim (abdulla rashim records / northern electronics / semantica) and also opal tapes’ boss stephen bishop own basic house. the b-side is a great megamix of the album tracks by the one and only ambient/electronica veteran scanner !

this track has been in my computer since a little while when dj sotofett joined me here in amsterdam, to play an epic back to back at the school (amazing new club here). when i am doing a track, it could go to a lot of different directions as im jamming them for hours in my pipe studio. i sometimes could get lost. so i asked sotofett to join me in the studio to help to finish it. then we ended with those 2 versions of cham, which are, as often when i work with the sextags man, the result of live takes almost unedited. we also add some percussions from shadi khries and we recorded two versions of the same track within hours. one being bass driven with a lot of psychedelic noises and the other one more space-techno. our adventures continues, here is another slice of spaced out music.hope you ll enjoy.

almost a year after his last outing, london-based vester koza is making a welcome return to the fray with a new ep entitled otr. featuring four atmospheric cuts, for the first time it finds him step away from his own maslo label to join houndstooth. fusing elements of dub, ambient and idm into moody sound worlds with you right at the centre, he has a subtle but seductive touch that has always marked him out. an on-going interest in security, technology and privacy characterizes his work, as does a passion for the vintage and modern gear he uses when producing. all of that is evident here in his most cerebral and conceptual release yet.

ext returns with his follow up to the third installment of house shoes reputable “the gift” series with “arts & craft”. ext cleared off his desktop about a year ago and sent me everything he had been working on. all of the tracks were in various stages of development. some loops, some fully fleshed out, some sounded like sketches. it drew my attention because of the resounding innocence of the collection, an innocence that is more or less gone from the industry in 2015. listen and learn what it sounds like to just have the intention to create, not muddled with the star aspirations or big money dreams. just to create.

for the debut of his newfound label ipso records, ko&#776,,,,lsch wanted to try something new. he has long been a fan of limiting himself in the studio. sometimes working with less equipment brings out the best in you, so for the first release i figured it would be interesting to experiment with this, ko&#776,,,,lsch says. inspired by the danish dogma films, he decided to make a rule, and as he is not one for overdoing things, the rule is very simple.

leon vynehall & a1b first started releasing collaborative music under laszlo dancehall in 2013. after several highly praised releases, both artists have spent the last few years concentrating on their successful solo careers. late last year they found time to work in studio once more and we’re extremely proud to be releasing the next chapter of laszlo dancehall on wolf music.

vactrol park, the collaborative endeavor between kyle martin (land of light) and guido zen (brain machine), returns to the esp institute with ii, rounding out the second half of their ep series. for this installment, a sojourn was made to stockholm to record at the computer music mecca, ems (elektronmusikstudion), where the artists had the opportunity to experiment extensively with the legendary buchla 200 modular and serge modular, two of the rarest and most pornographic modular synthesizers in existence. while both instruments originate from california (buchla in berkeley as a commission from pioneer morton subotnik, and serge at the california institute of the arts), the music vactrol park draws from these machines is far from warm and sunny. akin to their predecessors on the 2015 debut i, these works materialize a level of taste and measure of craft that’s unattainable by most, each retaining an individual cinematic approach yet working collectively toward one consummate goal—paralysis.

miami born turntablelist & producer, jesse perez, throws down a booty shaking killer house jam for edibles fourth release. what you say about my momma has been ripping up dancefloors for months since landing in eats everythings hands, so its a welcome release on the label, backed with a deadly remix from truncate. on the original mix, perez grinds out a funky and low-slung groove, its memorable vocal hook looping and chopping from side to side as the raw mpc beats and sub bass weave their magic. truncate brings his no nonsense and direct approach on the remix, carving out a dance mania style drum workout over the cut up vox (think robert armani meets armand van helden). truncate has been a hugely dependable producer for yonks via his trax on his own truncate label as well as mixes for jimmy edgar, shlomi aber and kink, and he does not disappoint here. perez wraps up the ep with boogie down brown, another slab of funk laden house goodness, blending high tension strings and rolling drums to great effect. perez has been firing out infectious house jams for labels like bpitch, dj sneaks im a house gangster and hot creations, for some time now, as well as working his own label mr. nice guy, so its a welcome addition to the edible roster for jesse perez

ygrok brings a long-awaited fourth release to its catalog. rene&#769,, audiard’s “sakhalin” takes things a step away from traditional club music.
the a side, “vox out” opens with the skeleton of a rhythm. scattered tom drums and barely detectable whirs, fading and reeling in the background. when the distorted voices begin their story behind a hissing, grinding off-shaker, you know this will not be your traditional club track. a story develops. the barest hint of a shuffling beat, a subtle reminder of soren’s previous work, pins down the journey into the darkest psychic territory. the title track sakhalin steps even further into darkness. crackling electrics and disjointed atmospheres change at a glacial pace over a submerged hydraulic beat. sakhalin audiard experimental territory.

nice price deal !!! a mind forever voyaging, due out spring 2016. featuring ten tracks of macho yet melodic, tender yet tense analogue house and techno, it is a continuation of the fine work the scenery records boss has done for labels like m>o>s and mistress in the last few years. something of a late starter, robinson has fomented his own mystical, nostalgic, inventive analogue sound that makes you jack, as well as conjuring real emotions with his great knack for melody. this album was recorded live then edited down.

marcus lambkin aka shit robot returns with his third full length album for dfa records, entitled what follows. the 11-track album was conceived and recorded at marcus’ home studio in a small town outside stuttgart, worked on in various new york studios and then mixed over the course of 11 intense & coffee-fuelled days in dfa label mate juan maclean’s new hampshire studio. the album follows lambkin’s previous long-players, from the cradle to the rave (2010) and we got a love (2014), which drew plaudits from the likes of the guardian and pitchfork, and featured reggie watts and james murphy among the array of contributors.

back to jack a new label from a couple of old school jocks with a passion for the sound of a 303. the first release by phazon aka lee coombs, the new outlet for all things acid and underground. special attention is given to this early authentic sound and is produced using original hardware and production techniques. authentic house music with an old school vibe. freqbox mechanical 909 drums and juno chord stabs move into 303 riff s and back out again. lying somewhere between detroit and chicago this is the sound of phazon. d minor experiments acid mix a true tb-303 workout that builds and builds and then builds some more. an acid house experience inspired by all the originators of the sound. this ain t london jackin acid with funk. 707 drums and layers of tb-303s with chopped up this ain t london vocals make this sound like mid to late 80s all over again. d minor experiments drums mix, 707 drum track for those who like to mix it up.

jäfar make a rapid return to the label and are back to grace the a side of fragil 019, while one half of the duo (elliot sindall) also pairs up with constantin nakov as seura on the flip. black mamba recalls certain aspects of jäfar s previous work on the label: the broken drum line, the subtle vocal samples and the global hypnotic aspect of the music. yet it is also radically different from marzsia. black mamba is a subtle but direct club track, aiming to get the dancers down through its heavy groove. the kick drum and low toms are strongly suggesting leg movement, joining forces with the snares and hats which call upon some serious head nodding.on the b side, white chapel is another broken beat club piece, but this time feels crafted for the afterhours. the groove is lighter and the heady feel is strong, closing the dancer s eyes and inviting them to drift through the music. once again, fragil comes up with original, well produced and highly danceable content, highlighting unsung talents for every versatile dj out there.

stamp records delve into the past for their next release, giving a new lease of life to one of swayzak s least characteristic and most sought-after tracks. swayzak are true heroes of the uk underground, having clocked numerous seminal releases in the late 90 s and early 00 s straddling the grey area between house and techno. disco dub plate volume 2 - originally out in 2000 - was an obvious anomaly in the duo s discography, that has managed to forge a path of its own amongst a completely different crowd to swayzak s usual disciples. one cut from that ep, stronger love , is a carefully arranged marriage between a certain pair of quintessential aor darlings and the soul voice of the 80 s. can we be more specific? no can do...it shouldn t really work, but somehow it does! it s been caned by many a balearic dj over the years, including mark seven who included it in his mythical originals compilation, where it holds its ground amongst other balearic heavyweights. as an added bonus for this 2016 edition we re treated to two brand new mixes ! frank agrario teases in bits of the original making for his chunkier version that is aimed squarely at the dancefloor, while brun (1/2 of swayzak) delivers a bang up-to-date dub that keeps its elements to the bare minimum, building into a deep hypnotic house chugger.
